Characterization of actinide bearing soils: top sixty centimeters of 216-Z- 9 enclosed trench (open access)

Characterization of actinide bearing soils: top sixty centimeters of 216-Z- 9 enclosed trench

A program to examine the soil-actinide relationship in sediments from a disposal facility was initiated in March 1973. Initial work has been done using samples from the 216-Z-9 covered trench. Soil mounts were made of soil recovered from a core of an uncontaminated well drilled alongside Z-9 trench. The mounts were made by plastic-impregnating smaller, 1-in. diameter cores taken from the original 4-in. diameter cores. The uncontaminated mounts showed that the less than 30 mesh soil was composed of predominately metamorphic rock fragments of the Belt Series, brought down from northern Washington and Idaho by the ancestral Columbia River. Two 4-in. diameter cores, 2 ft in length. were taken from the floor of Z-9 trench. Smaller contaminated mounts were made from these original cores in the same manner as with the uncontaminated samples. Overlying one of these cores (4-- 11), was a sludge layer of silica, alumina and water. The other core (4-5) had no sludge layer. At least two types of plutonium were found in cores 4- 11 and 4- 5 by autoradiographic and microprobe examination. The plutonium particles (up to 10 mu m in diameter and 60 wt% PuO/sub 2/) were the most conspicuous form. These occurred near …

Natural nickel and $sup 60$Ni neutron elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections from 4.07 to 8.56 MeV (open access)

Natural nickel and $sup 60$Ni neutron elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections from 4.07 to 8.56 MeV

Measured neutron elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections for natural nickel between 4.07 and 8.56 MeV are presented and compared with the elastic differertial cross sections of Holmqvist and Wiedling and with ENDF/B III MAT 1123. The elastic differential cross sections are in general agreemert with those of Holmqvist and Wiedling but our angle-integrated differertial elastic cross sections are systemati cally higher by about 10% than those of Holmqvist and Wiedling above 4.6 MeV, a situation found in comparing the two sets of data for other elements. The ENDF/B II1 MAT 1123 elastic angular distributions are found to be in poor agreement with experimertal results from 4 to 8.5 MeV, though the ENDF/B III MAT 1123 angle-integrated differertial elasti c cross sections agree generally within experimertal uncertairties with our results over this energy range. Additional measurements of /sup 60/Ni neutron elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections at 4.34 and 4.92 MeV are given and compared with previous results from 6 to 8.5 MeV and with natural nickel results. Agreement is shown to be excellent. Inelastic scattering cross sections to the 1.450 MeV level in sup 58/Ni are computed from the natural nickel and /sup 60/Ni data. An evaporation model of …

HTGR fuels reprocessing facilities. Environmental statement (open access)

HTGR fuels reprocessing facilities. Environmental statement

The environmental effects of the construction and operation of the HTGR Fuels Reprocessing Facilities at the NRTS, Idaho are examined. The descriptions include: the environment in the area including the history, geology, geography, hydrology, ecology, and land and water use; the facility and its effluents; impacts from construction and operation of the facility; alternatives to the proposed action; irreversible and irretrievable commitments of resources; and the benefits-cost analysis of the proposed plant operation. Natural chromium and $sup 52$Cr neutron elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections from 4.07 to 8.56 MeV (open access)

Natural chromium and $sup 52$Cr neutron elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections from 4.07 to 8.56 MeV

Measured neutron elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections for natural chromium between 4.07 and 8.56 MeV and for /sup 52/Cr between 6.44 and 8.56 MeV are presented and compared with the elasti c differertial cross sections of Holmqvist and Wiedling and with ENDF/B MAT 1121. The elastic scattering differertial cross sections are in fair agreemert with those of Holmqvist and Wiedling. The angle-integrated differertial elastic scattering cross sections are systematically higher by as much as 17% than those of Holmqvist and Wiedling above 4.6 MeV, a situation simtlar to that found in comparing the two sets of data for other elemerts. The ENDF/B III MAT 1121 elastic angnlar distributions are found to be in poor agreement with experimental results from 4 to 8.5 MeV, though the ENDF/B III MAT 1121 angleintegrated differenti al elastic scattering cross sections agree within experimental uncertainties with the results over this energy range. An evaporation model of inelastic scattering is found to be of questionable validity if applied to levels in the residual, nucleus of excitation energy less than 6 MeV. (auth)
