Extrusion of Unclad Natural Uranium and Molybdenum-Natural Uranium Rod for TRX. Report on Experiment 7c4

Extrusion of unclad billets of both natural U and 12 wt.% Mo natural U was employed for producing unclad rods subsequently machine finished to .600 deg diameter and to random lengths which were fitted into assembly 4' long. Indications are that the extrusion of unclad natural U and its alloys is feasible within certain qualifications. (auth)

Injury Experience in the Coking Industry, 1951 (open access)

Injury Experience in the Coking Industry, 1951

From Introduction and Summary: "Reports from operating companies showed that 25,715 men worked at coke ovens in 1951, about 6 percent more than were employed in 1950 and, except in 1943, the largest work force since 1930, when 28,139 men were employed. The work time for all employees was 70,190,493 man-hours. The returns indicated an average of 344 work days per man as compared with 341 days in the previous year. Accidents at the ovens resulted in the death of 10 and injury to 768 workers, both of these figures representing fewer injuries than in 1950."

STUDIES IN THE NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY OF PLUTONIUM, AMERICIUM, AND CURIUM AND MASSES OF THE HEAVIEST ELEMENTS (open access)

STUDIES IN THE NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY OF PLUTONIUM, AMERICIUM, AND CURIUM AND MASSES OF THE HEAVIEST ELEMENTS

Ion exchange column elution methods for the separation of americium and curium using tartrate and lactate solutions have been developed which are superior to citrate elutions. Tartrate elutions are suitable for slow separations and lactate elutions are satisfactory for general use where rapid separations are required. Fission and spallation products were isolated from Pu{sup 239} targets which had been bombarded with alpha particles of 21 to 37 Mev energy. Fission yield curves as well as fission and spallation excitation functions are presented and discussed in terms of odd-even and Z{sup 2}/A effects. The high cross sections observed for the (a, 2n) and (a, p2n) reactions were surprising results from this investigation. In the course of the Pu{sup 239} bombardments, studies of the decay schemes of Am{sup 240}, Cm{sup 240}, and Cm{sup 241} were undertaken. Decay energy and half-1ife information on all of the transmercury nuclides has been collected and systematized. Trends on the energy surface for alpha energies, beta energies, nucleon binding energies, and Bohr-Wheeler parameters are presented. These energy systematics have led to a complete tabulation of the masses of the isotopes of the elements above mercury. Predictions of nuclear properties are included for some isotopes of elements 99 …

Tuna Longline Fishery and Fishing Grounds

From introduction: The Japanese tuna fishery, which formerly had for its fishing grounds almost the whole western Pacific and a part of the Indian Ocean, wherein its small vessels roamed at will, was reduced by the Pacific war to such a nearly complete state of destruction that little was left to remind one of its former condition.

Experimental stress analysis of stiffened cylinders with cutouts: Shear load (open access)

Experimental stress analysis of stiffened cylinders with cutouts: Shear load

A cylindrical semimonocoque shell of circular cross section was mounted as a cantilever and loaded by a direct shear at the tip. The cylinder was tested with no cutout, with a rectangular cutout on the tension side, and with the cutout centered on the neutral axis on one side of the cylinder. The cutout was successively enlarged through six sizes varying from 30 degrees to 130 degrees in circumference and from 1 and 2 bays in length. Strain measurements were made with resistance-type wire strain gages near the cutout on the stringers, the skin, and the rings for each case, and the stresses obtained are presented in tables.
