Use of flame-immersed blades to improve combustion limits and efficiency of a 5-inch diameter connected-pipe, ram-jet combustor

Report presenting the effects of flame-immersed blades on combustion stability and efficiency, which were determined at various combustor-inlet conditions by use of several geometric blade arrangements, two fuels, two fuel-injection systems, and two blade temperatures. Specific combustor configurations with flame-immersed blades showed marked improvement in stability and efficiency. The operational life of the blades was also observed to be excellent.

Calculation of Average Flux in Moderator of Water Lattices by Means of a Relaxation Method (open access)

Calculation of Average Flux in Moderator of Water Lattices by Means of a Relaxation Method

The following report concerns the application of a relaxation mesh method for the determination of the average flux within the moderator of a light water moderated, 1.027 per cent U-235, hexagonal lattice with a volume ratio (V_H2O + V_Al)/V_Uranium of 4:1. It was hoped that the calculation would enable one to determine any differences in flux which might result from the fact that the unit cell is a hexagon instead of a cylinder. Because we were primarily interested in the effect due to geometry we applied the same theory, diffusion theory, to the hexagon by means of the mesh method and to the equivalent cylinder.

Lift, drag, and pitching moment of low-aspect-ratio wings at subsonic and supersonic speeds (open access)

Lift, drag, and pitching moment of low-aspect-ratio wings at subsonic and supersonic speeds

Results are presented, in graphical and tabular form, from a wind tunnel investigation of the lift, drag, and pitching moment characteristics of thin, low-aspect-ratio wings in combination with a body at Mach numbers from 0.25 to as high as 1.9. The following are analyzed and compared with existing theoretical results: 1. Effects of aspect ratio on 3-percent-thick triangular wings; 2. Effects of plan form on 3-percent-thick triangular, sweptback, and unswept wings of aspect ratios 2 and 3; 3. Effects of wing thickness on triangular wings of aspect ratio 2; 4. Effects of profile shape on triangular, sweptback, and unswept wings; and 5. Effects of camber and twist on triangular wings of aspect ratios 2 and 4.

Mine Pumping Plants: Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania (open access)

Mine Pumping Plants: Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania

From Summary: "To obtain a reliable picture of the anthracite-mine-water problem and to solve that problem, it is necessary to have factual data on the volume and the quality and character of mine water handled by pumping plants in the anthracite region, as well as kinds of pumps utilized and problems concerning their operation. The main conclusion that be drawn from an investigation of drainage practices in the anthracite region is that, although efficient pumping layouts, tunnels for draining active mines, and large-scale surface-drainage facilities for keeping water out of mines are in use, the anthracite industry still is threatened with curtailment, to a major degree, and premature extinction because of the encroachment of water, unless remedial action is undertaken in the vary near future by all interests concerned."

Equations, Tables, and Charts for Compressible Flow (open access)

Equations, Tables, and Charts for Compressible Flow

"This report, which is a revision and extension of NACA-TN-1428, presents a compilation of equations, tables, and charts useful in the analysis of high-speed flow of a compressible fluid. The equations provide relations for continuous one-dimensional flow, normal and oblique shock waves, and Prandtl-Meyer expansions for both perfect and imperfect gases. The tables present useful dimensionless ratios for continuous one-dimensional flow and for normal shock waves as functions of Mach number for air considered as a perfect gas" (p. 613).
