From introduction: This report documents the results of the 1980 Florida water assessment made by personnel of the five Water Management Districts in a joint effort with U.S. Geological Survey personnel. The study was made as part of a statewide cooperative program with the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation, Northwest Florida Water Management District, St. Johns River Water Management District, South Florida Water Management District, Southwest Florida Water Management District, and the Suwannee River Management District.

Primary Productivity by Phytoplankton in the Tidal, Fresh Potomac River, Maryland, May 1980 to August 1981

Purpose and scope: The purpose of this study was to determine primary productivity and respiration of the fresh, tidal Potomac River. The data will be used by the authors and other researchers involved in modelling chemical and biological properties to calculate phytoplankton growth rates. Methods are documented in detail so that the report could serve as a reference. The report covers the period from May 1980 through August 1981. Five stations were selected for study that are representative of biologically important reaches of the fresh, tidal Potomac River.

Storm Runoff as Related to Urbanization Based on Data Collected in Salem and Portland, and Generalized for the Willamette Valley, Oregon

Abstract: Storm runoff as related to urbanization is defined by a series of regression equations for Salem and for the Willamette Valley, Oregon. In addition to data from 17 basins monitored in the Salem area, data from 24 basins gaged in a previous study in Portland, Oregon-Vancouver, Washington were used defining the Willamette Valley equations. Basins used to define equations ranged in size from 0.2 to 26 square mi. Rainfall intensity varied from 1.8 to 2.2 in. for the 6-hour, 0.020 exceedance probability. Sensitivity analyses of equations indicate that urbanization of an undeveloped basin can increase peak discharge more than three times and almost double runoff volume. Much of Portland and Vancouver are located on porous river terraces where dry wells are used to shunt runoff. Much of east Salem is located on previously farmed land where drain tiles used to dewater soils still connect directly to streams.

The Benchmark Farm Program - A Method for Estimating Irrigation Water Use in Southwest Florida

From introduction: The purpose of this report is to present irrigation water-use data for selected farms and to show how these data are used to estimate total water use for irrigating various crops in southwest Florida. The study area includes all of the Southwest Florida Water Management District and is about 10,000 miles in size (figure 1). The initial emphasis on benchmark farm locations was in Hillsborough, Manatee, and Polk Counties. As the program continues, new farms are being added in surrounding counties (figure 2).

Objectives and scope: The principal objectives of this study were to assess the past and current water quality of the impoundment, its major tributaries, and its discharge, and to address the environmental impact of raised pool levels. Data collection was directed toward documenting the temporal and spatial variations in physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the water, to estimate annual nutrient and suspended sediment loading, and to determine the algal biomass, dominant genera, algal growth potential, and limiting nutrient.

From purposes and approach of study: The primary purposes of this study were to: (1) Define, on a reconnaissance level, current (1980) water-quality conditions in major aquifers (water-yielding rock formations) in the western Snake River basin, Swan Falls to Glenns Ferry; (2) summarize and interpret available geologic and hydrologic data to assist in understanding the natural and man-cause factors that affect present and future understanding the natural and man-caused factors that affect present and future water-quality conditions; and (3) establish a hydrologic data base on which future data can be compared to evaluate changes. A secondary purpose was to evaluate the possible effects percolation of thermal water applied for irrigation may have on the quality of local, less mineralized, nonthermal ground water.

A Method for Estimating Ground-Water Return Flow to the Lower Colorado River in the Yuma Area, Arizona and California

Purpose and scope: The purpose of this study was to develop a method for estimating the amount of subsurface return flow to the Colorado River in the Yuma area. This report presents a method that permits an approximate accounting of ground-water return flow from each side of the Colorado River in Yuma reach. The method presented in this report was developed specifically for application in the Yuma area. The validity of the assumptions inherent in the method was evaluated on the basis of the local hydrologic system. The applicability of the method to other hydrologic systems is not addressed in this report.

Abstract: PHRQINPT is a FORTRAN 77 program that facilitates formulation of the input data file to PHREEQE (Parkhurst, Thorstenson, and Plummer, 1980). PHRQINPT runs interactively and contains many features to help the user construct the input data set. This report describes these features and gives instructions on the use and implementation of PHRQINPT. A listing of the program and the two accompanying data sets are given in the Attachments, along with two examples.
