Development of an identification system for potential ICES projects (open access)

Development of an identification system for potential ICES projects

An earlier study by Real Estate Research Corporation (RERC) provides an overview of methods for developing marketing strategies for ICES. One aim of that document was to establish an information system for identifying areas, subareas, sites, or projects with substantial growth or development activity as potential candidates for the application of ICES. This report summarizes RERC's effort to implement and test such an information system. The specific objectives of this report are: (1) identify and collect basic information on 150 large-scale construction projects; (2) identify areas of the country, i.e., states and SMSAs that evidence general growth characteristics that would support ICES applications; (3) identify regions, states, and SMSAs that display higher-than-average energy costs; and (4) identify regions, states, and SMSAs that have experienced significant activity in identified land-use sectors and subsectors. Recent development activities in the commercial, industrial, residential, institutional, and transportation sectors are detailed. Mixed-use projects are included within the commercial sector. An annotated bibliography is included. (MCW)

A History of Station WRR: Pioneer in Municipally Owned Radio (open access)

A History of Station WRR: Pioneer in Municipally Owned Radio

This study presents an overall history of WRR, the first municipally owned radio station and describes the problems it encountered by competing in a commercial Dallas market. The study marks the establishment of WRR in 1920 as a signal transmitter for the Dallas Fire Department, its transition to an entertainment station, the addition of WRR-FM, retirement of long-time Station Manager Durward J. Tucker, heavy financial losses, public complaints, format changes, and the sale of the station. A final chapter provides a summary and recommendations for further study, and concludes that WRR should have left the commercial market when its revenue and ratings began to decline.

The Effects of Progressive Relaxation Instructions on College Students' Performance on a Paired-Associate Learning Task (open access)

The Effects of Progressive Relaxation Instructions on College Students' Performance on a Paired-Associate Learning Task

The problem of this study was to compare performances of college students given relaxation instructions and those not given those instructions on a paired-associate learning task. The results indicated that relaxation instructions alone produced a decrement in recall. When subjects received relaxation instructions as well as the suggestion that relaxation enhances learning, the decrement did not occur. Thus, situational demand characteristics appeared to be a significant variable in determining what effect relaxation instructions had on recall.

Dependence Upon Oil and its Influence on Foreign Policy (open access)

Dependence Upon Oil and its Influence on Foreign Policy

This investigation is concerned with determining what influence, if any, results from the dependence upon foreign sources of petroleum by the United States, France, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union. The influence that petroleum plays upon the changing attitudes of these four nations towards Israel and the Arab nations is ascertained by the utilization of primary and secondary sources. The study analyzes all the resolutions that have been adopted by the United Nations Security Council in the years between 1948 and 1976 dealing specifically with the Arab-Israeli conflict. Other chapters analyze each of the four nations to which attention is being directed. This study concludes that the growing and continuing dependence upon Arab oil has influenced the foreign policies the four nations have assumed toward the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Oil and the Iranian Economy (open access)

Oil and the Iranian Economy

This study is concerned with the relationship between the Iranian Oil Industry and Iranian economy. Oil revenues have been the largest source for financing economic development plans and for obtaining foreign exchange. In this paper, the history of the Iranian oil industry is summarized, and five previously implemented developmental plans are analyzed. Additionally, the impact of oil on some economic sectors and its contribution to GNP is examined. The strong correlation between oil reserves and the economy may bring a problem in the future when oil reserves run out. Iranian economists believe that the economy must be industrialized in order to reduce the economy's reliance on oil. This paper recommends that all the economic sectors, particularly agriculture, should receive careful consideration, even though the national goal is to industrialize the economy.

The Development and Testing of an Instrument to Evaluate Aesthetic Judgments (open access)

The Development and Testing of an Instrument to Evaluate Aesthetic Judgments

This study was concerned with the development and testing of an instrument to measure levels of aesthetic judgement making. The review of evaluation methods for aesthetic judgement resulted in a two-part instrument. The review of related literature demonstrated that the majority of instruments for aesthetic judgment employed a naive to sophisticated judgment comparison to determine levels of aesthetic sensitivity. The inadequacy of a score reporting only the degree of agreement between the subject's choice and the choice of a panel of experts without indicating the source agreement was discussed. Content analysis of aesthetic responses used in research studies by Wilson and Morris were presented as an alternative means for determining aesthetic criteria. Part one required the subject to select the better of two art works and to state the reasons for the choice. Part two, a self-scoring component, consisted of the Wilson categories presented as typical statements containing the primary criterion for the category. The subject was instructed to select the statements that were closest in meaning to his initial response.
