The following document is a collection of reports on the studies of the early Mesozoic basins of the Eastern United States. The reports are divided into four sections: reports that study the sedimentary rocks of the basins, studies of related to Jurassic igneous rocks, studies related to the geophysics, structure, and tectonics of the basins, and studies related to the mineral resources.

A report about the United States's coal supply. The U.S. has 25 percent of the world's identified coal resources and about 20 percent of the world's estimated total coal resources.

Abstract: The High Plains of the eastern New Mexico region are recognized as an abundant and varied source of natural resources. This bibliography of over 1,900 references concerned with geology, hydrology, chemistry, and geography has been compiled to assist physical science researchers in their study of this region.

From abstract: A complex Neogene history characterizes the offshore Santa Maria basin and the northwest margin of the western Transverse Ranges, California. This history includes the transition from subduction to a transtensional and then transpressional plate boundary, including about 900 of clockwise rotation of the western Transverse Ranges. This report uses seismic reflection data to document the geometry of structures that accommodated this deformation and offshore well data to date and correlate the sediments which were affected by the different tectonic episodes.

Abstract: The U.S. Geological Survey and the Corporación Venezolana de Guayana, Técnica Minera, C.A., conducted a cooperative mapping, exploration, and mineral resource estimation study in Venezuela from 1987 to 1992. The work was conducted in the Venezuelan Guayana Shield, an Archean to Early and Middle Proterozoic craton in southern and eastern Venezuela of almost 415,000 km2 that is mostly covered by jungle and savanna. Results obtained from this project contribute a new understanding of the geology and evolution of the Venezuelan Guayana Shield and the nature of its mineral occurrences. Personnel from Técnica Minera, C.A., were trained both in the field and in the office to conduct modern mineral exploration and geologic mapping and research programs. This five-year project was supported financially by the Corporación Venezolana de Guayana.

The following report is a mineral resource assessment of Coronado National Forest of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, formed by geologic, geochemical, and geophysical data.

From abstract: Mafic and ultramafic xenoliths in the Western United States are present in volcanic rocks ranging from lamprophyric to dacitic in composition and are found in every major tectonic province from the Coast ranges from California to the Great Plains. Xenoliths from 68 localities are described here, but new localities are being discovered, and much remain to be learned about their distribution with respect to the tectonic and geophysical framework of the Western United States.

A report about the natural gas drilling frontier in deep sedimentary basins. Papers presented here are intended to introduce the petroleum community to a set of geologic tools that may be used to predict deep undiscovered natural gas accumulations.
