The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Howard M. Heisler. Born in 1926, he ran away from home and joined the Army in 1942. He was underage and used an assumed name. He was assigned to a reconnaissance group in the 1st Cavalry Division and sent to Australia in the spring of 1943. He participated in the invasion of the Admiralty Islands, Leyte, and Luzon. He was injured by a mortar shell when his platoon was guarding a bridge outside of Manila. He was evacuated to a hospital ship and received further treatment at a general hospital in New Guinea. He rejoined his unit in Luzon where they were training for the invasion of Japan. They were sent to Tokyo after the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, but before the Japanese surrendered. He describes the city of Tokyo. He shares an anecdote about his parents learning of his whereabouts as the result of his being wounded. He was discharged under his real name in 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Warren Wishnack. Wishnack joined the Army in August of 1942. He trained to serve as a radio operator. He joined the 6th Cavalry, a reconnaissance unit, and provides some details of their unique training. Wishnack was assigned to an M-8 armored car where he tapped out Morse Code to communicate with headquarters and also worked with an FM radio for short distances. He provides details of his radio training and the M-8 armored vehicle. He served in Ireland from October 1943 to June of 1944, conducting routine training missions and building a motor pool. They landed on Utah Beach July 9. They participated in five campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge and attacking the Siegfried Line. Wishnack provides some details of the tanks and the battles he fought in. He also shares his encounters with the German civilians. He was discharged around December of 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Gerald Graham. Graham joined the Georgia National Guard in the 1930s, and enlisted in Troop C, 108th Cavalry. In 1940, his unit was re-designated to Battery C, 101st Anti-aircraft Battalion. He was stationed at Fort Stewart in Georgia when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Beginning May of 1942, his unit was transferred to the 40th Coastal Artillery Brigade, and they served as the first ground troops in New Guinea. Graham worked as the liaison officer between his anti-aircraft unit and the 5th Air Force, identifying needed anti-aircraft to protect landing fields for planes to drop replacement men and supplies. In early 1943, he met General Douglas MacArthur at Port Moresby, and transferred to MacArthur’s headquarters serving as his aide-de-camp. He shares intimate details of his work for MacArthur. They traveled to Hollandia, the Philippines and Japan during the occupation. In December of 1945 he left Japan.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Walter Karnes. Karnes was drafted into the Army in January 1945. He was aboard a troop ship in the Pacific headed for the Philippines when the war with Japan ended. He spent some time guarding Japanese prinsoners of war on Leyte before deciding to extend his enlistment. He was back in the US in December and was assigned to Germany in Janaury 1946. He shares a few anecdotes about his time in Occupied Germany. His enlistment expired in October 1946 and Karnes opted for discharge in January 1947.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with James Green. Green joined the Army in the spring of 1943. He served with the 763rd Tank Battalion, 96th Infantry Division, and transferred to Scofield Barracks in Hawaii in January of 1944. They participated in the battles of Leyte and Okinawa. He was discharged in late 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Merrill Pierce. Pierce entered the Navy in September, 1941 and was in training when the war started. His assignment was with the Armed Guard and he rode a tanker to Hawaii. He switched ships and hauled molasses up from Chile. On another ship, he carried bombs to Australia and India. Next they hauled a load of jute to New York. He landed at Peleliu and worked as a stevedore. When the war ended, Pierce was tasked with dumping aircraft overboard off Los Negros.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with G. K. Guennel. Guennel moved to the United States from Germany in 1934. From January of 1933 to September of 1934, prior to moving to the States, he lived under the Hitler regime and provides some details of this experience. While attending Butler University in Indiana Guennel enlisted in the Army Reserve in the summer of 1942. He was called to active duty in June of 1943 after his graduation. He was invited to take Army Intelligence training at Camp Ritchie in Maryland and graduated in July of 1944. He learned all communication systems, Morse Code, semaphore, map reading, learned Italian and more. He was assigned to the Interrogation, Prisoners of War (I.P.W.) Team 124 as a POW Interrogator. In late 1944 he traveled to Scotland and France where he was attached to the 44th Infantry Division. He provides details of his experiences overseas, including surviving the cold winter and interrogating prisoners of war. The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Eugene Crispi. Crispi joined the Navy in February of 1940. He served aboard USS Houston (CA-30). Crispi worked aboard the ship until it sank in March of 1942 during the Battle of Sunda Strait. He swam ashore on Java Island and was captured by the Japanese. Crispi was taken to a POW Camp in Serang, Java, and later to a camp in Jakarta. After 3 years of imprisonment, he was placed into an Army hospital. He returned to the US and was discharged in late 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Thomas M. Baye. Baye was born on 24 October 1924 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was drafted into the Army in July 1943. Following basic training at Camp Roberts and Fort Ord in California, he was sent to Hawaii. In December 1943 he was assigned to the 27th Division, C Company, 1st Battalion, 165th Regiment. After more training, including landings on the beach in an LVT launched from an LST, his unit went to Saipan. They went ashore on 16 June 1944. They saw heavy combat, although as a radio operator, Baye had few chances to shoot his rifle. In August, the 27th went to Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides for R and R. In April 1945 they landed on Okinawa. In September 1945, following the surrender of Japan, the 27th was sent to Japan as occupiers. In December, Baye returned to the United States. After brief stays at Fort Lewis in Washington and Fort Carson in Colorado, he was released from the service in January 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Glenn Cleland. He was born in Rochester, Indiana on December 3, 1920. He was drafted into the Army in October 1942 and was assigned to a machine gun platoon with the 12th Armored Division, 17th Infantry Battalion. On October 3, 1944 he shipped out to England on the passenger liner MS Empress of Australia. He recalls that it took two weeks to resupply, followed by a landing at Le Havre, France. He recalls that his division was assigned to the 3rd Army and relieved the 4th Armored Division. His division was sent to the small Alsatian village of Herrlisheim on January 16, 1945, to join other units. He recalls that the Americans had captured half of the village by that time, when the Germans retook the town on January 17. By January 18 his unit was holed up in a barn when a German tank arrived, forcing them to surrender. He recalls being marched to the Rhine River, suffering frostbite and crossing the river, where he and the other POWs were loaded onto railroad cattle guards and taken to the German POW camp, Stalag VI-G in Baden Baden. …
