It is said that Crumley rescued the Texas Normal College from financial distress by convincing the Legislature to allow it to confer state teaching certificates. The school name changed from Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute to North Texas Normal College in 1894 under Crumley.

Document of the history of how North Texas State University was previously called North Texas Normal College in 1890 but changed in 1961 after another name in 1923. Bachelor's degrees were conferred for the first time in 1919 with master's and doctorate degrees being offered in 1935 and 1951, respectively. After the brief statement of the history, the former presidents are recognized in the document as well.
