This group does not contain the entire membership of the Company, which is much regretted, but only those whose pictures could be obtained thirty years after the war. The Company was raised by Captain Peter Hardeman about the middle of April, 1861, in the Counties of Houston, Anderson, Cherokee and Nacogdoches, calling for twenty-five men from each of the Counties, and marched immediately to San Antonio, where the regiment was organized and mustered into the State service on May 17th, 1861. In a few days after this, this Company, with a part of the regiment, started on the expedition to Arizona and New Mexico, and returned to San Antonio in the summer of 1862, when the regiment, being again brought together, was reorganized and served until the close of the war in Texas and Louisiana and was disbanded in June 1865. This company being among the first troops called for, was composed mainly of boys and young men, with a few middle-aged men, several of the boys being only fifteen years old. Photo of a drawing of the Hunter House Hotel. David Clark Hunter bought a small house on Lot 8 block 9, original townsite map, in August 1848. By 1850, the hotel was a three storied building with an attic and an ell. According to Mary Kate Hunter, the old hotel burned and the prize register perished in the fire. It was located on the northeast corner of the intersection of Perry Street and the Rusk Road. It also acted as a stage coach stop during the mid 1800's. Among the famous guests were: Sam Houston, Roger Q. Mills, Judge Sexton, General Wigfall, Colonel Ochiltree and many others. The Delespine Hotel, which was located on the opposite corner across Perry street from the Hunter House, was also popular stopping place, and it is said that the old steps of which made a favorite place for Sam Houston to sit and whittle and talk to his constituents. Both buildings have been gone now for many years.

Born just outside Palestine in 1866 to Nathaniel and Jennie (Beeson) Hunter, Mary Kate Hunter played a significant role in recording, promoting and preserving the history of Palestine and Anderson County. Educated at Palestine Female Academy and Sam Houston Normal Institute, she studied piano with classical musicians across the United States and in Germany, and taught piano to countless Palestine children. As a clubwoman, she was a charter member of the self-culture club in Palestine, organized in 1894; served as a delegate to the First Annual Meeting of the Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1898; organized a local chapter of the Women’s National Foundation in 1921 for the preservation and study of local history; and founded and led the Fort Houston Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. A supporter of voting rights for women, Mary Kate Hunter organized and was first President of the Palestine Equal Suffrage Association, and held statewide office in the Texas Equal Suffrage Association in 1915-16. In Addition to her civic Duties, Hunter also was a published poet, Editor of a local society journal and board member of the Texas State Library. Tin type image of Lewallen Conaway, who was born March 14, 1832 in Mississippi and died September 10, 1862, the son of James Sr. and Mary Conaway. He was a Private in Co. A of the 20th Texas Cavalry, CSA, during the War of the Rebellion and possibly died during the war. A search of known burials in Houston and Anderson Counties reveal no burial location for him. This photo was found among the papers of the Conaway family that were donated to the Palestine Public Library some years ago.

Photograph of Harrison Sanders Murdock. He was born 12 January 1887 and died 17 December 1922. He had 2 wives, the first being Martha Cannady Brimberry Murdock, who died in 1873, and the second being Mary E. Dotson Murdock, who died on 1 April 1943. They are all three buried at the Murdock Cemetery, Houston County Texas, along with many other members of their family. This photograph was found among the papers of the Conaway family that were donated to the Palestine Public Library some years ago.

This is a photograph of the first building constructed on the courthouse square. It was located where number 601 East Lacy is now located, but it extended over approximately halfway into the lot of the current number 603. This was Alexander Joost's store, known after the Civil War as the "Cheap Cash Store". Joost was an immigrant from France who had an earlier store at Fort Houston. As soon as the site was located for the county seat of the new Anderson County, he bought land there and prepared to moved. He rebuilt after the 1874 fire and again after the 1879 fire. Most of the conflagrations that were destroying entire blocks of the city of Palestine in the 1870s and 1880s were set by an incendiary who was eluding the police. Even though numerous merchants in New Town and Old Town suffered from these fires, Joost took them personally, especially when rumors were spread around town that he was having difficulty maintaining a good stock of merchandise. To combat this, he took out an ad in the Trinity Advocate to let his customers know he was still offering the best merchandise at the best prices. However, when his store …
