THE HEAT TREATMENT OF PLUTONIUM (open access)

THE HEAT TREATMENT OF PLUTONIUM

Two groups of plutonium bars, one group containing 165 ppm iron and the other 678 ppm iron were end-quenched from the beta, gamma, delta, delta-prime, and epsilon phases. In general, cooling rate was found to have three striking effects on microstructure. The alpha grain size was found to decrease with increasing cooling rate during cooling from all phases. Upon cooling high-iron plutonium from the epsilon phase, the size of the Pu--Pu6/sub 6/Fe eutectic network decreased with increasing cooling rate. Cooling high-iron plutonium from temperatures between 413 and 460 deg C produced a wide variety of Pu --Pu/sub 6/ Fe configurations in the microstructure. Finally, the size of an unidentified spheroidal inclusion, soluble in the delta and higher temperature phases, decreased as cooling rate increased across the delta to gamma transformation. These effects of cooling rate can be used to indicate the cooling rate or thermal history that a particular plutonium specimen has encountered. A linear relationship between the alpha grain size and the Pu--Pu/sub 6/Fe eutectic network size was observed. The network size was roughly two times larger than the alpha grain size. Hardness traverses on each of the bars indlcated no apparent effect of coollng rate during quenchlng on …

THE IMPACT PROPERTIES OF UNALLOYED PLUTONIUM (open access)

THE IMPACT PROPERTIES OF UNALLOYED PLUTONIUM

The effect of temperature on the unnotched and notched Charpy impact properties of plutonium was studied in the alpha, beta, gamma, and delta phases encompassing a temperature range of -43 to 330 deg C. Impact energies for unnotched specimens generally increased with increasing test temperature in the alpha and beta phases. Brittle failures were obtained in these phases. The specimen tested in the gamma phase did not fracture but bcnt in ofi U-shape and pulled through the anvil. lmpact energies for the Charpy V-notched specimens were much lower than for the unnotched spcc(mens.dt corresponding temperatures. Brittle failures were obtained in the alpha and beta phases; some ductility was evidenced in the gamma phase while the specimen tested in the delta phase did not fracture but bent in a U-shape. It was concluded that the beta phase is quite sensitive to both strain rate and notch effects. Fracture appearance in the alpha and beta phase is discussed from the standpoint of grain boundary effects and microcracking. (auth)

Catalytic Hydrocracking of High Boiler in Nuclear Reactor Coolant (open access)

Catalytic Hydrocracking of High Boiler in Nuclear Reactor Coolant

Selective hydrocracking of total coolant was found to be an efficient and economic method for reconstitution of high boiler in the coolant to usable product. Such a process could eliminate the expense of vacuum distillation and disposal of high boilers produced in a nuclear reactor power plant. The selective conversion was possible since polyphenyls were found to be more susceptible towards hydrocracking as the phenyl chain length increased. Both cobalt molybdate on alumina and nickel oxide on alumina (50 to 80 square meters per gram) were found to be efficient catalysts at conditions of 900 deg F and 1000 psig with the latter giving more selective conversion to terphenyls. Continuous flow hydrocracking tests on OMRE Core II cool ant (containing 23% high boiler) resulted in 90 to 100% conversion of high boiler at product recoveries of 85 to 95 wt%. Average molecular weights of the products (biphenyl and heavier) were in the range 205 to 225 compared to 270 for Core II coolant. High boiler in Core III-A coolant which contained mainly first-generation polymers (hexaphenyls) was slightly more refractory toward hydrocracking than Core II high boiler, and conversion decreased slightly with increasing on-stream time. However, at optimum condition for processing …

Vibration and Shock, Highway Transport Between Santa Susana Mountains and Edwards Air Force Base (open access)

Vibration and Shock, Highway Transport Between Santa Susana Mountains and Edwards Air Force Base

A road test, performed on a SNAP 10A mass mockup system, indicated that shock and vibration inputs under actual conditions were not excessive. During the course of travel from the Santa Susana field laboratory to Edwards Air Force Base, and during field trials at Santa Susana, the test system was subjected to only two accelerations exceeding 2 g, and no inputs exceeded 2.4 g. It was concluded that shock and vibration to SNAP systems from highway transporation can be adequately controlled by: selecting the appropriate vehicie, providing proper packaging; specifying route and speed limits for various driving conditions; using ordinary care in loading and unloading; and including suitable shock monitoring instruments with the shipment, (P.C.H.)

BEFCYF And DBDT: IBM 704 Codes For Preparing Input For Bevatron Orbit Code (BOC)

Two IBM-704 codes have been written which are auxiliary to the Bevatron orbit code BOC. The first, BEFCYF, interpolates among tabulated values of the median-plane magnetic flux density of the Bevatron to produce an equivalent array of values in a form appropriate to BOC. The second, DBDT, produces azimuthal derivatives of the fields produced by BEFCYF. The internal operation of BEFCYF and DBDT is described, and instructions for their execution are given.

Tory II-C reactor cold critical assembly program (open access)

Tory II-C reactor cold critical assembly program

Declassified 27 Nov 1973. The cold critical experiments with the Tory II-C reactor were performed in the critical facility of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at Livermore. The reactor is described briefly; the experimental equipment and the arrangement for the experiments is described in detail. The core poison was removed without difficulty, and criticality was achieved at 1624 hours July 14, 1965. With the design core configuration the shutdown margin was less than had been intended; criticality was attained at a shim rod bank position of 38.5 inches insertion rather than the expected 35 inches All Hastelloy tie tubes were replaced by Rene'-41. A heated core experiment with DELTA T = 129 plus or minus 7 deg F above room temperature provided a measure of the temperature coefficient which was found to be --3.9 x 10/sup -3/ plus or minus 7% inch of shim rod bank travel/ deg F. Other experiments included flux mapping, using fission foils, fission counters and copper flux wires, transients to determine control element worths, studies of flux spectrum by means of threshold detectors, and measurements of multiplication for various shutdown configurations for purposes of operational safety. Transient measurements, critical rod configurations, and flux distributions were also …

Three Recitals of Music by German and Danish Composers, J.S. Bach, and Contemporary North American Composers, and a Lecture Recital on the Registration of Orchestral Textures in Organ Music (open access)

Three Recitals of Music by German and Danish Composers, J.S. Bach, and Contemporary North American Composers, and a Lecture Recital on the Registration of Orchestral Textures in Organ Music

Four contrasting recitals were presented to fulfill the requirements for the degree Doctor of Musical Arts. The first recital contained music of miscellaneous composers. Two Preludes and Fugues by the North German Baroque composers Vincent Libeck and Dietrich Buxtehude were separated by Samuel Scheidt's Variations on the Netherlands folk song "Ach du feiner Reiter". The Brahms Chorale Prelude "0 wie selig seid ihr doch, ihr Frommen" and the Louis Vierne "Intermezzo" from the Third Symphony represented Romantic-style composition. The major work of the program was the Carl Nielsen Commotio, a large work in orchestral style. The second recital consisted completely of music by J. S. Bach. Four works of contrasting styles were presented: Concerto, Opus 3, No. 8, composed by Antonio Vivaldi and transcribed by Bach, Partita on Sie gegrisset, Jesu gtig, Sonata IV, and Fantasy and Fugue in G Minor. The third recital was the lecture recital: Registration of Orchestral Textures in Organ Music. This lecture was an attempt to deal with the contemporary problem in performance practice of registration of Romantic organ music. The trends in organ building in the twentieth century have ranged from a deeper exploration of the possibilities of the Romantic organ to the reevaluation …
