Swarm Control (open access)

Swarm Control

"The tendency [of bees] to swarm can be reduced by the introduction of superior stock by the use of well-arranged hives and good combs, and by management which prevents a congestion of bees in the brood nest. Swarming, therefore, can be prevented to a large extent by proper equipment and management. The conditions which reduce the congestion in the brood-nest (preventive measures) are at the same time the conditions which induce the bees to work with the greatest energy in gathering nectar. When remedial measures are employed, the manipulation is such that the colony is thrown into a condition comparable either to the swarm or to the parent colony in nature." -- p. 2. Also includes a discussion of the factors which may induce bees to swarm.

The Corrosion of Fence Wire (open access)

The Corrosion of Fence Wire

"The investigation of which this bulletin is in part a record has been carried on with a twofold purpose in view. The first object is to furnish information to the farmer which will enable him to exercise an intelligent judgment as to the difficulties involved in the manufacture of wire fencing which shall be low in price and at the same time resistant to rust and corrosion. The second object has been to determine, with the cooperation of progressive manufacturers and metallurgists, the causes which underlie the much too rapid corrosion of modern steel wire, and, if possible, to suggest improvements in methods of manufacture by means of which the difficulties may be at least partially, if not wholly, overcome." -- p. 5

Organization, Financing, and Administration of Drainage Districts

"This bulletin is prepared to aid landowners, district officials, and others interested in forming drainage districts for the purpose of reclaiming swamp and overflowed lands. It presents methods of organizing the interested property owners and principles which should be considered in the administration and financing of drainage districts. It is particularly applicable to drainage districts in the humid regions of the United States. Because the laws in no two states are exactly alike, the subject necessarily must be treated in a general way." -- p. 3
