Dynamic Determination of the Compressibility of Metals (open access)

Dynamic Determination of the Compressibility of Metals

Abstract: "Equation of State data for duralumin in the pressure range from 0.1 to 0.3 megabar have been determined dynamically by measuring shock and free surface velocity electrically in a place of 24 ST duralumin which has been stressed by a high explosive donation. The theory is presented which allows comparison with data obtained by other experimenters, requiring the relationship between pressure and compression either at constant entropy or constant temperature. The empirical form chosen for the equation of state p = αμ + βμ-2 expresses the pressure as a quadratic function of the compression. Experimental techniques are described in detail. Five points are given for equation of state of duralumin in the pressure range from approximately 0.15 megabar to 0.33 megabars. Some data are also presented for cadmium and steel."

Interpretation of Westwood, New Jersey Rainfall Data

"Progress is reported in an evaluation of fission product concentration in rain as a function of time, location, and meteorological setting. Data on rainfall collected at Westwood, N. J., were analyzed for information on the mechanisms of fallout deposition, seasonal variations in fallout, the stratospheric residence time of W/sup 185/ resulting from Operation Hardtack, and the accuracy of pot samplers for sample collection. Data from other collection stations were also analyzed for consistency with Westwood data."

Image Converter Tubes : Manufacturer's Data

Introduction. A survey has been made of the image converter tubes generally available in this country and Europe. Ultraviolet and infrared types using photocathodes were included, buy x-ray and solid state types were omitted. Since this is the first time that this list has been compiled, it may have errors and omissions. The author will appreciate any corrections or suggestions, and it is hoped that revised lists will be published from time to time.

Anodic Precipitation of Tracer Manganese as Dioxide

Quantitative recovery of carrier‐free 10−9 M manganese (II) is possible from weakly acidic solutions. The use of lead dioxide as either a non-isotopic carrier or a chemical displacing agent makes possible high recoveries from more acidic solutions.

Reaction Studies with Fast Neutrons

"A new 350 KV power supply was installed, and major modifications of the accelerator were completed. The changes include the installation of new focusing and extractor supplies, an extension of the accelerator column, and the replacement of the isolation transformer by a motor generator set. Improved performance at voltages up to 200 KV was obtained, but a modification of the electrostatic lens system will be required for operation at 350 KV. The results of an investigation of the C/sup 12/(n, alpha )Be/sup 9/ reaction and a search for an excited state in He/sup 5/ are discussed. Work in progress includes: N/sup 14/ and O/sup 16/ (n, alpha ) angular distribution measurements with counters; studies of I/sup 127/ (n,d)Te/sup 126/ using counters and I/sup 127/(n,p)Te/sup 127/ using emulsions; and the development of an E x dE/dx pulse height multiplier."

Heat Transfer to Superheated Steam (open access)

Heat Transfer to Superheated Steam

Abstract: The physical property variation of superheated steam differs sufficiently from most other gases to warrant experimental investigation of heat transfer performance. Results are reported here of measurements made in a uniformly heated circular duct with steam at 1000 psi. The data agree very well with the expression use for design purposes, which is based on information in the literature for heating of other gases as well as steam. This work was a continuation of that performed under Task (Heat Transfer) of the Nuclear Superheat Project, AEC Contract AT(04-3)-189, Project Agreement 13.

A Correlation for Boiling Heat Transfer to Saturated Fluids in Convective Flow (open access)

A Correlation for Boiling Heat Transfer to Saturated Fluids in Convective Flow

An additive mechanism of micro- and macro-convective heat transfer was formulated to represent boiling heat transfer with net vapor generation to saturated, non-metallic fluids in convective flow. The final equations are [equations not transcribed]. The second equation will be recognized as the Dittus-Boelter equation with the additional factor F. The two functions F and S are defined as [equations not transcribed] where Re is the effective Reynolds number for the two-phase fluid and ΔTe is the effective superheat for bubble growth. F and S were obtained as functions of the Martinelli parameter and the two-phase Reynolds number, respectively. The correlation was tested with available data for water and organic fluids. Data from different sources which could not be satisfactorily correlated by existing correlations were shown to be quite well correlated by the one presently proposed. The average deviation between calculated and measured boiling coefficients for all data points from nine experimental cases was ±11%

Chemical Engineering Division Summary Report July, August, and September, 1957 (open access)

Chemical Engineering Division Summary Report July, August, and September, 1957

Development work continued on a fused salt process for the recovery of uranium from zirconium-matrix fuel alloys. The fuel is dissolved in a sodium fluoride-zirconium fluoride melt at 600°C by hydrogen fluoride sparging. The melt is then sparged with fluorine gas which volatilizes the dissolved uranium as the hexafluoride. The final decontamination and purification of the uranium hexafluoride are accomplished by fractional distillation. The testing of graphite as a container material for the hydrofluorination step was continued. Additional thermal cycling experiments were performed, using a helium sparge in equimolar sodium fluoride-zirconium fluoride melt at 600°C. The extent of penetration of the fused salt into the graphite was determined. No mechanical degradation was present. Dimensional change data were also obtained for graphite vessels in which the fused salt was sparged with hydrogen fluoride.

Survey of Component Requirements and Availability for Gas-Cooled Nuclear Reactor Power Plants (open access)

Survey of Component Requirements and Availability for Gas-Cooled Nuclear Reactor Power Plants

"The potential of closed-cycle gas turbines for producing a highly efficient nuclear power plant is discussed. Such turbines are being developed for three applications: the HTRE program (Heat Transfer Reactor Experiment) for nuclear aircraft propulsion, the MGCR program (Marine Gas Cooled Reactor) for nuclear marine propulsion, and the ML-1 (Mobile Low-Power Gas-Cooled Nuclear Power Plant) for nuclear electric power generation in an Army mobile power plant as part of the Army Gas-Cooled Reactor Systems Program (AGCRSP). Some characteristics of several non-nuclear gas turbines as well as gas turbine prime movers of 18 U.S. gas-cooled nuclear power plant projects were examined. Turbine and compressor performance, performance improvement, full-load and part load operation, maintenance, component life, and reliability are discussed. Consideration is given to factors affecting structural integrity of turbomachinery, such as choice of proper materials, vibrations, cooling, and construction features. The material reported is based on information obtained in part from the 155 references included and in part from the data requested from some 60 manufacturers."
