[Sam Houston School Booklet, 1959-60]

This pamphlet provides basic information about Sam Houston School, an elementary school in Marshall, Texas, for the 1959-60 school year. It includes the names of the teachers and the grades they taught, a history of the school, and a list of the school's principals and the years they served. It was intended for distribution to the parents of the pupils. The paper cover has a photograph of the school building provided by the Marshall New Messenger. On the back is a photo of the principal, W. H. Segraves. The text was reproduced by a spirit duplicator, and the purple ink has faded over time.

Photograph taken in a classroom of Sam Houston elementary school in Marshall, Texas showing students, some sitting at desks and others standing in back with their music teacher, Mrs. Sims McCutchan, Jr. in the very back. The walls are of painted horizontal boards, with three multipaned windows with curtains and above those windows, just under the ceiling, three smaller, horizontal windows. A blackboard with Christmas greetings and decorations is on the other visible wall. The desks are old desks with cast iron frames with desk on one side and folding bench on the other. Between two of the windows, examples of students' art work are mounted, and "Girl Scout Laws" hang between the other windows. An empty desk in the front right of the photo shows the book shelf under the desk surface and what appears to be a book bag hanging from the corner of the iron frame. An unidentified male, possibly another teacher, is seated in front of Mrs. McCutchan. On the back of the photograph Mrs. McCutchan wrote: "1949, I was transferred to Sam Houston School to teach only music classes in grades 8 classes of music from 3rd through 7th grades."

[Invitation to the Joint Session of the Literary Societies of the Sam Houston Normal Institute, Huntsville, Texas, May 26, 1900]

The three pages of this invitation and program are tied into a folded cover of linen paper. The front cover has intertwined raised initials, S, H, N, I (for Sam Houston Normal Institute), and above them is printed an image in red and blue ink of a Texas flag with the initials S.H.N.I. flying from the top of the flag pole. The first page within the cover is the printed invitation to the Joint Session of the Literary Societies of the Sam Houston Normal Institute, held in Memorial Hall, Huntsville, Texas, May 26, 1900. In the top left corner of the invitation page is a lithographic image by C. A. Wright, Philadelphia, that depicts a variety of scholarly and literary objects arranged on a cloth-covered table. The second page consists of the program for the event. The third page lists the names of nine literary societies: Lone Star, Athena, Baldwin, Houstonian, Philomathean, Eclectic, House, Ross, and Senate. Handwritten in ink on the back of the cover are the words "Mom's graduation program Mary McAlister McCutchan," probably written at a later date by her daughter-in-law Johnnie McCutchan.

Trinity Episcopal Church, Marshall, Tex.

Black and white photo-postcard of Trinity Episcopal Church in Marshall, Texas, located at the northeast corner of N. Grove St. and W. Houston St. The cross-gable brick structure has a large corner entrance in a bell tower. There are three pointed-arch Gothic-style windows in the wall to the left of the tower. Vines are growing on two corners of the tower and bushes have been planted around the base of the building. Leafless trees are standing between the sidewalk and the street and a fire hydrant and telephone pole are on the corner and a street light extends from the telephone pole. [Presentation of Scrapbook to Teacher]

Photograph of a young girl presenting a scrapbook to Mrs. Sims McCutchan, Jr. (Miss Johnnie). The picture ran in the Marshall News Messenger on 1/23/49 accompanying an article about the presentation of the scrapbook, which contained drawings and poems by South Marshall School 5th & 6th graders before Mrs. McCutchan left to teach at Sam Houston School. Mary Ann Simmons made the presentation and Harold Collier looked on. The photograph was taken in the Girl Scout room at the city park, identified in the article as the Maverick Corral, where the students had been housed during the fall 1948 semester.Mrs. McCutchan wrote notes on the back explaining the context. Attached on the back is a form used by the newspaper for processing the photo.

Interior Trinity Episcopal Church, Marshall, Texas

Color halftone postcard of the interior of Trinity Episcopal Church, Marshall, Texas, located at the northeast corner of N. Grove St. and W. Houston St., probably photographed in the 1920s. The view is taken from the back of the church looking up the aisle toward the altar with the pews on either side. A dominant feature is the open timber roof. Pointed-arch Gothic revival stained glass windows are on both sides and behind the altar. Eight ceiling fans are visible. Printed on the back between the message and address spaces: "C. T. American Art Colored" and a small logo of a circle with the letters C T Co overlapping in the center and Chicago below them.

Marshall Motor Hotel, an Earlee Hotel

Color halftone postcard of the Marshall Motor Hotel, Marshall, Texas, 210 E. Houston St., which was built in 1929 as the Hotel Marshall. The rooftop sign still says Hotel Marshall. The view is taken from the west and shows the facade and west side of the building and part of the swimming pool beside it. A metal structure on top of the roof supports a large sign that says "Hotel Marshall." Printed on a white space below the image: "Marshall Motor Hotel, an Earlee Hotel." There is a two-story house with double gallery to the left of the church behind two trees. At the bottom of the image, printed in black is the title, "First M. E. Church, South, Marshall, Texas."
