Multifactorial Determinants of Change in Mental Disorder and Happiness among Older Americans

Mental health is an intrinsic capability that constitute an essential component of healthy aging. Mental health is constituted by positive constructs such as happiness and negative constructs (mental disorders) such as depression. As people grow older, they become more prone to developing mental disorders which are linked to poorer quality of life, increased disability, increased utilization and cost of health services, and higher rates of suicide. This dissertation involved three studies that focused on factors that predict change in mental disorders and happiness of older Americans over a period of five years. Two waves of publicly available national representative data from the National Social Life Health and Aging Project (NSHAP) collected in 2010 and 2015 were used. A total of 2210 older adults within the ages 62-90 years were used in the analyses. Mental health measures were CES-Depression scale, HADS anxiety scale, and self-rated happiness. Essay 1 aimed to identify the important aspects of older adults' interaction with their neighborhood that predict the presence of mental disorder and happiness. Essay 2 evaluated the psychosocial factors that predict change in mental disorder and happiness of older adults, whereas essay 3 investigated the multifactorial determinants of change in mental disorder and happiness …

Intellectual Capital Creates Value for the Organization - What About Other Stakeholders? (open access)

Intellectual Capital Creates Value for the Organization - What About Other Stakeholders?

The ever-increasing market turbulence has turned today’s corporate landscape more competitive and complex. Particularly during the last two decades, the increased utilization of ICT systems and technologies globally transformed the services sector in terms of ease of business processes and improved client service delivery. However, in the current knowledge-based era, ICT-enabled systems and tools would only be meaningful if these are appropriately utilized by the knowledgeable and skilled workforce. However, leveraging these necessitates a knowledge-enabled work culture and recognizing that people are crucial to building a robust Intellectual Capital (IC) that is central to achieving long-term market competitiveness. IC comprising of intangible assets and knowledge resources is central to value creation for the firm as evident from the growth of the knowledge-based industries. Nevertheless, the true potential of IC for deriving value advantage for diverse organizational stakeholders has not been fully utilized. Hence, by conducting 12 face2face interviews with the senior executives within Australian Professional Service Firms (PSFs), this study offers renewed approach to IC valuation by introducing ‘Triple Value Bottom-line’ perspective in PSFs. The results highlight that the IC offers enormous potential towards deriving broader value outcomes for multiple organizational stakeholders.

Closing the Opportunity Gap: Leadership Practices that Lead to Increases in Access to AP Courses for Latinx Students (open access)

Closing the Opportunity Gap: Leadership Practices that Lead to Increases in Access to AP Courses for Latinx Students

Using an exploratory case study approach, this study examined the school leadership factors that contribute to building Latinx student social capital as well as the best practices for creating a more equitable AP program. Through this qualitative study, the organizational and leadership factors of the AP program at Stripes High School (pseudonym) were examined, and how these factors contributed toward closing the opportunity gap. This study used semi-structured interviews with district and campus leaders and an AP teachers focus group to determine leadership beliefs and actions that were successful in building an accessible and equitable advanced academics program for Latinx students, as well as an AP student focus group to triangulate the findings. The results of this study showed Latinx students, already lacking social capital, also face many barriers of different forms: systemic, structural and cultural in their educational opportunities for AP courses and exams. The case study campus overcame these barriers and increased equity by allowing Latinx students more access to AP courses and exams through district- and campus-level administrators working to remove barriers and hire and support the most capable and socially aware AP teachers who aim to grow and nurture the students who they serve. Based on …

An Analysis of Information Technology (IT) Post-Adoption Behavior

The primary focus of this research is explicating the role of emotion in IT post-adoption behavior. Studied in the context of intelligent personal assistants (IPA), a class of conversational artificial intelligence (AI), the first study integrates elements from computer science, communications, and IS disciplines. The research identifies two constructs vital for speech-based technologies, natural language understanding, and feedback, and examines their role in use decisions. This work provides guidance to practice on how best to allocate R&D investments in conversational AI. The second essay examines the IT continuance through the theoretical lens of the expectation-confirmation model (ECM), incorportating cognitive and emotional satisfaction into the ECM framework. Empirical testing of the model suggests that it offers additional clarity on IT continuance phenomena and provides a significant improvement to the explanatory power of ECM in the context of an emerging technology. The third essay is one of the earliest efforts to conceptualize and test a theoretical model that considers emotional attachment in IT continuance behavior. This essay develops a novel model to investigate this phenomenon based on emotional attachment theory, and empirically validates the proposed model in the context of conversational artificial intelligence systems. While the existing theories of IT continuance focus …

Spiritually-Oriented Expressive Writing and Positive Psychological Outcomes Following a Natural Disaster (open access)

Spiritually-Oriented Expressive Writing and Positive Psychological Outcomes Following a Natural Disaster

Many religious/spiritual (R/S) individuals receive meaning from R/S and utilize R/S to help them cope with stressful life events. However, natural disasters can disrupt the R/S meaning-making process (e.g., positive R/S coping strategies) because natural disasters can elicit cognitive dissonance between one's core R/S beliefs and personal disaster experience. R/S individuals suffering from a disaster experience could benefit from interventions that allow them to process their R/S experiences. The purpose of this dissertation is to fill a gap in the literature by exploring the effectiveness of a spiritually-oriented expressive writing intervention on positive psychological outcomes (e.g., meaning in life, satisfaction with life) in 132 R/S individuals that have experienced a natural disaster (i.e., survivors of the 2016 Baton Rouge, Louisiana flood). Quantitative results indicated the spiritually-oriented intervention was effective in promoting increased meaning in life but not life satisfaction. Survivors with lower pre-intervention positive attitudes toward God evidenced the strongest positive impact on their meaning in life. Qualitative analyses, using the constant comparative method from Corbin and Strauss's grounded theory approach, revealed six themes in the experimental group's written responses: (a) R/S growth, (b) R/S struggle, (c) R/S cognitive dissonance, (d) R/S reappraisals, (e) R/S proximity-seeking, and (f) spiritual support …
