Electron cyclotron resonant heating (ECRH) diagnostic system on TMX

The ECRH diagnostics system monitors the net power delivered to the plasma by four 200-kW gyrotron oscillators, the frequency of each gyrotron, and some operating parameters of the gyrotron power supply system. The combination CAMAC- and GPIB-based data acquisition system is under desktop computer control that provides the capability for data conversion and display. The data acquisition system is also interfaced to the main computer system that acquires and archives the data.

Microgas dispersion for fine-coal cleaning. Technical progress report, March 1, 1981-August 31, 1981

The results of the flotation tests conducted demonstrate that the use of fine colloidal gas aphrons (CGA) bubbles is beneficial for fine coal flotation. As demonstrated with the ultrafine coal sample, the froth products of CGA flotation are almost twice as clean as those of the conventional flotation tests at 70% yield. The kerosene consumption was considerably higher, however, both in conventional and in CGA flotation. Attempts were made to coat the CGA bubbles with a film of kerosene and use them for flotation, hoping that this would reduce the oil consumption. However, no positive results have yet been obtained with this process. Another problem associated with CGA flotation is that the ash content of the froth products is relatively high when using a stable CGA, such as that prepared with Dowfroth M150. On the other hand, when using an unstable CGA, as is the case with MIBC, low ash clean coal products can be obtained, but at the expense of the yield. Two approaches are being investigated to correct this problem. A considerable amount of effort has been made to determine the surface charge of the CGA.

A variety of information may also be included that is pertinent to the range and mean as well as experimental design, demography, health effects, pathology, morphology, and toxicity. Review articles are included in the data base; however, no data have been extracted from such documents because the original research articles are included.

Multi-faceted energy-conservation program. Final technical report

The purpose of this project was to design and build 19 solar thermosiphoning air panels, insulate walls, generally tighten up the library building, and install other energy conserving devices. Another purpose of the project was to serve as a model to other libraries in Kentucky, to commercial buildings in this area, and to homeowners in the area. After much discussion with architects and among ourselves, we chose a type of solar installation that would be visible to the public and easily replicated. We also carried out a number of procedures to make the library building more energy efficient: installed a 7-day programmable setback thermostat; insulated the walls; improved weatherstripping around the doors; added an economizer control to our air-handling system; and put an electric damper controlling supply air to a large but intermittently usedmeeting room. These changes resulted in approximately $700 in savings from December 1981, through February 1982. Thus far, we have carried out public education with a sign, brochures, press releases, and the purchase of appropriate books; librarians have received our brochure, and some have attended a workshop given here on energy conservation and solar energy.

Chemicals identified in human biological media: a data base. Third annual report, October 1981

Data from almost 1600 of the 3800 body-burden documents collected to date have been entered in the data base as of October 1981. The emphasis on including recent literature and significant research documents has resulted in a chronological mix of articles from 1974 to the present. When body-burden articles are identified, data are extracted and entered in the data base by chemical and tissue/body fluid. Each data entry comprises a single record (or line entry) and is assigned a record number. If a particular document deals with more than one chemical and/or tissue, there will be multiple records for that document. For example, a study of 5 chemicals in each of 3 tissues has 15 different records (or 15 line entries) in the data base with 15 record numbers. Record numbers are assigned consecutively throughout the entire data base and appear in the upper left corner of the first column for each record.

Workshop on core and sample curation for the National Continental Scientific Drilling Program

The Workshop on Core and Sample Curation was held to discuss the best means of handling, distributing, and advertising samples and data collected during a Continental Scientific Drilling Program (CSDP) and to establish better communication between sample curators regarding common problems. It was geneerally agreed that CSDP samples should be handled, on a regional basis, by existing data systems and sample repositories judged to have adequate staff and support. Repository design, sample handling procedures, and sample accounting systems were discussed. Across North America, support for curation of geological samples was varied, but it was strongest within states or regions with well-established energy and mineral industries. A well-supported repository pays for itself through the circulation and preservation of samples and stratigraphic information. A national CSDP must have a well-established curatorial policy and system of regional repositories to circulate information and samples throughout the scientific community. Well-curated samples and data are a national resource with considerable benefits for industry and academia. Attendees agreed to form a Society of Geoscience Curators to maintain communication between curators from private, government, and university repositories and core research laboratories.

This abstract covers three main areas of investigation: mesothelioma induction by asbestos, radiation tumorigenesis and transplantable tumors. Canadian and Rhodesian asbestos fibers have been administered under anesthesia to rats by intratracheal, intrapleural and intraperitoneal injection. Additional groups were given 3-methylcholanthrene or x-radiation along with asbestos. A large series of mice also treated as above have displayed mesotheliomas. In addition, glass fiber injections and feeding of asbestos were done and have produced negative results to date. The carcinogenic effect of whole-body radiation on hemi-irradiated parabiont partners exposed to a single 1000 R dose of x-ray was evidenced by a significant increase in the incidence of malignant tumors in only six tissues: skin, supporting soft tissue, kidney, bone, pancreatic islets and ovary. In the male adrenal medulla and in the female breast genetic and parabiotic hormonal factors were judged to exert a significant effect. The occurrence of incisional (anastomotic) sarcomas in significant numbers in hemi-irradiated and parabiont control pairs suggests the operation of mechanical factors complicating the healing process, only slightly enhanced by radiation. Damage analysis and fundamental studies

As a planning activity, the objectives of the workshop were to list, prioritize and milestone the activities necessary to understand, interpret and control the mechanical behavior of candidate fusion reactor alloys. Emphasis was placed on flow and fracture processes which are unique to the fusion environment since the national fusion materials program must evaluate these effects without assistance from other reactor programs. The working group on flow processes and properties was concerned with the time-dependent and independent flow. This included radiation hardening and steady state and cyclic creep. The working group on the effect of flow on fracture was concerned with the relationships between the unique flow properties of irradiated materials, such as dislocation channeling, and the fracture properties of these materials. The working group on time-dependent fracture was concerned with high-temperature, time-dependent fracture, such as stress-rupture and fatigue fracture, while also being concerned with time-dependent environmental effects on fracture. The working group on radiation-induced or enhanced embrittlement was concerned primarily with time-independent fracture of materials for near-term fusion device applications.

This report summarizes the toxicological studies on SRC-I materials completed under Subcontract No. 10 as part of the Health Programs under the Solvent Refined Coal (SRC) Process Contract during the total period of the subcontract, June 1, 1976 through June 9, 1978. The studies were conducted by Industrial Bio-Test Laboratories (IBT) as the subcontractor. A number of acute studies were completed on the products and intermediate streams as well as several subchronic studies. In addition, preliminary dose-ranging, or pilot, studies were completed. None of the materials exhibited high toxicities when administered orally, dermally, or by the inhalation route. Three of the materials proved to be severely or extremely irritating to the eyes. The pilot dermal and teratogenesis studies revealed some evidence of decreased viability in offspring and reduced fetal body weights. The subcontract was terminated for convenience on June 9, 1978 when it became apparent that IBT could not satisfactorily continue the studies.

Role of molecular dynamics on descriptions of shock-front processes

By means of a computational approach based on classical molecular dynamics, we can begin to form a realistic picture of shock-induced processes occurring at the shock front and resulting from the detailed, violent motion associated with shock motion on an atomic scale. Prototype studies of phase transitions will be discussed. We will also examine the interaction of the shock front with defects, surfaces, voids, and inclusions, and across grain boundaries. We will focus on the critical question of how mechanical energy imparted to a condensed material by shock loading is converted to the activation energy required to overcome some initial energy barrier in an initiation process.

Three different aspects of photosynthesis are being investigated. Three different technical approaches are being used (i.e., mass spectrometry; biochemical techniques; and a combination of polarographic, spectroscopic, and fluorescence techniques). In the first group of experiments, a specially designed mass spectrometer system was used to monitor the gas exchange in chloroplasts in response to single short flashes of light. Several gases and their isotopes (e.g., N/sub 2/, /sup 15/N/sub 2/, /sup 18/O/sub 2/, etc.) were monitored to study photosystem II reactions in chloroplasts, particularly those reactions that use donors other than H/sub 2/ /sup 16/O (and evolve products other than /sup 16/O/sub 2/). Our goal was to obtain a better understanding of the O/sub 2/-evolving system. The second topic studied was the role of copper in photosynthesis. Biochemical techniques were applied to investigating the role of nonplastocyanin copper in photosystem II- and photosystem I-mediated O/sub 2/ uptake via polyphenol oxidase. The third area of study was light harvesting and electron transport in C/sub 4/ plants. Histopathologic, morphometric, and physiologic investigation of lungs of dogs exposed to uranium-ore dust

The most consistent pulmonary-function change attributed to carnotite uranium-ore-dust exposure (at 15 mg/m/sup 3/, for 4 h/day, 5 days/week) is an increased slope of the single-breath N/sub 2/ washout curve, suggesting an uneven distribution of ventilation. This change was observed in dogs exposed for less than 1 year and continued through 4 years of exposure. Measurements of pulmonary resistance, after 27, 40 and 47 months exposure, showed slight age-related changes and increasing differences between control and exposed animals with duration of exposure. These two changes are suggestive of a bronchitic response, similar to the industrial bronchitis of mine workers. The most notable pulmonary lesions observed in dogs exposed for up to 4 years are: vesicular emphysema, peribronchiolitis and focal pneumoconiosis. Lesions of the major airways and upper respiratory tract, when present, were minimal in severity. Pulmonary vesicular emphysema was present in all but one of the examined dogs. The emphysema was dose-related, in that it was present only to a slight degree in dogs exposed for less than 3 years and, thereafter, increased in severity. Morphometric measurement data confirmed the value of the histopathologic grading system for the degree of emphysema. These data correlated best with the dynamic pulmonary compliance …

Mutagenic and chemical properties of SRC-I materials: a status report

Process solvent (PS) and solid product (dissolved in organic solvent) produced by the Solvent Refined Coal (SRC-I) process at the Wilsonville pilot plant contain mutagenically active components against the Ames-Salmonella strains, Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100. Ames-positive mutagens are apparently concentrated in the moderately polar to strongly polar chemical constituents of both materials. However, the dissolved solid product contains a much higher proportion of very strongly polar mutagens, and may be enriched in acidic - i.e., oxygen-containing mutagens.

Data management in a fusion energy research experiment

Present-day fusion research requires extensive support for the large amount of scientific data generated, bringing about three distinct problems computer systems must solve: (1) the processing of large amounts of data in very small time frames; (2) the archiving, analyzing and managing of the entire data output for the project's lifetime; (3) the standardization of data for the exchange of information between laboratories. The computer system supporting General Atomic's Doublet III tokamak, a project funded by the United States Department of Energy, is the first to encounter and address these problems through a system-wide data base structure.

Sister chromatid exchange (SCE) in muntjac chromosomes is generally proportional to the chromosomal DNA content, but the SCE frequency is reduced in the heterochromatic neck region of the X chromosome. The physical properties of muntjac DNA and the kinetics of repair of UV damage in muntjac heterochromatin and euchromatin were examined and compared with the distribution of sister chromatid exchange.

Environmetrics of synfuels. I. Processing the automated PDP-11 data components for the UMD gasifier facility

This report summarizes the techniques and procedures used to handle automated data collected at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) campus coal gasification facility. This facility, which is partially funded by the Department of Energy, is being evaluated by scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for its potential health and environmental effects. Automatic data collections and manually collected and sample results data are used for this assessment. A data management project at ORNL handles these and other UMD data for the Gasifiers in Industry Program (GIIP). Specifically, this report documents the procedures developed within the data management project for handling two categories of automated data: (1) process and (2) environmental. The examples included use actual data from the first one and a half years of gasifier operation.

Process development and fabrication for sphere-pac fuel rods. [PWR; BWR]

Uranium fuel rods containing sphere-pac fuel have been fabricated for in-reactor tests and demonstrations. A process for the development, qualification, and fabrication of acceptable sphere-pac fuel rods is described. Special equipment to control fuel contamination with moisture or air and the equipment layout needed for rod fabrication is described and tests for assuring the uniformity of the fuel column are discussed. Fuel retainers required for sphere-pac fuel column stability and instrumentation to measure fuel column smear density are described. Results of sphere-pac fuel rod fabrication campaigns are reviewed and recommended improvements for high throughput production are noted.
