Portrait of an Age: The Political Career of Stephen W. Dorsey, 1868-1889 (open access)

Portrait of an Age: The Political Career of Stephen W. Dorsey, 1868-1889

This study traces the public life of Stephen Dorsey chronologically from his service in the Civil War to the end of his political career, which came with his failure to have a friend appointed governor of New Mexico Territory in 1889. Traditional interpretations of Dorsey are based on a combination of scant evidence, carpetbagger stereotypes, and the assumption that he was guilty of masterminding the monumental swindle of the Star Route Frauds. Closer examination of Dorsey's public life, however, reveals that this traditional view is distorted. A major conclusion of this study is that the assumption on which most traditional views of Dorsey are based, that he was the mastermind behind the Star Route Frauds, is not supported by the evidence. This study shows that it is impossible to study a Gilded Age political figure without also considering his business interests. Many of Dorsey's political activities, for example his involvement in the Compromise of 1877, can be traced to his business enterprises. Although Dorsey was not entirely innocent in the frauds, he was not guilty of the crimes with which the government charged him. This study also concludes that Dorsey was left vulnerable to the prosecution which ended his career …

Representationalism in Woven Tapestry Technique (open access)

Representationalism in Woven Tapestry Technique

My interest in pictorial representationalism began when I started painting and drawing as a child, and my concern for working realistically continued and developed through my undergraduate years in college. In this investigation i explored the working processes used in a representational approach to contemporary woven tapestries. A brief discussion of the origins of representational woven tapestries with concentration upon Twentieth Century textiles was followed by an analysis of the influences upon my work by artists and stylistic trends.

Image Discovery: Intaglio Process

At the beginning of my graduate study, a series of clown images was executed. The entire surface was utilized in a rapid and spontaneous manner in the first few drawings. The clown images became more complex and visually perplexing. Yet, through an attentive study of these images, I felt a need to be more direct, expressive, and selective in approach and method. It seemed that, consciously or unconsciously, the process of drawing an image important to me was an attendant characteristic to the actualization of the image. The personal promise in these conceptualized and drawn forms was of major concern to me. My proposal, therefore, was to investigate the existing motivations behind these images, to explore the meaning and significance of the sum total of my work.

The objective of the study was to determine the quality of the health education possessed by the eight grade students in Arkansas, in terms of teacher qualifications and number of hours heath education is taught per year, and compare it with students across the nation to build a suggested curriculum guide in health education. The following conclusions were reached: 1) Arkansas eight grade students are one school year behind national norms, relative through the AAHPER Cooperative Health Test results. 2) Female students scored higher than male students. 3) There is little variance between the different sizes of schools and the knowledge possessed by students in the several content areas on the AAHPER Cooperative Health Test. 5) The instruction of health education varied greatly in quality among Arkansas schools in the study. 6) Instructors teaching health education to eighth grade students in Arkansas were usually teachers not prepared to …
