Prediction of Hearing Thresholds by Means of the Acoustic Reflex with Autistic and Normal Subjects (open access)

Prediction of Hearing Thresholds by Means of the Acoustic Reflex with Autistic and Normal Subjects

This study concerns audiometric evaluation and prediction of hearing loss in the autistic child based on information derived from acoustic reflex thresholds. Two groups (autistic males and normal children) of five subjects each were utilized. Results indicated that the acoustic reflex method consistently predicted significantly higher hearing thresholds for autistic subjects than operant pure-tone audiometric procedures. Furthermore, the acoustic reflex thresholds were significantly less sensitive in the autistic group than in the normal group, suggesting that the acoustic reflex response is somehow altered in autistic individuals. These findings are consistent with earlier work which hypothesized that autistics, manifest an organic brain lesion which interferes with the propagation of auditory information.

Electron trajectory program (open access)

Electron trajectory program

The SLAC Electron Trajectory Program is described and instructions and examples for users are given. The program is specifically written to compute trajectories of charged particles in electrostatic and magnetostatic focusing systems including the effects of space charge and self-magnetic fields. Starting options include Child's Law conditions on cathodes of various shapes. Either rectangular or cylindrically symmetric geometry may be used. Magntic fields may be specified using arbitrary configurations of coils, or the output of a magnet program such as Poisson or by an externally calculated array of the axial fields. The program is available in IBM FORTRAN but can be easily converted for use on other brands of hardware. The program is intended to be used with a plotter whose interface the user must provide.

Kindergarten Children and Their Concepts About Print: A Developmental Study Based on Bloom's Theory of School Learning (open access)

Kindergarten Children and Their Concepts About Print: A Developmental Study Based on Bloom's Theory of School Learning

This study describes the developmental movement of kindergarten children from oral language toward written communication. The study describes and documents evidence of a sample of kindergarten children as they interact with print concepts in a kindergarten environment. The subjects were thirty kindergarten students randomly selected from three specific kindergartens identified as implementing the Key Vocabulary approach of Sylvia Ashton-Warner. The classrooms were public school kindergartens located in a suburban area of North Central Texas. From the findings several conclusions can be drawn. The learning of kindergarten children can be documented and a profile of that learning can be developed that will have possible future use in the learning career of the child. Kindergarten children may perceive the reading of a story to the group differently from the teacher. The perception of the process of writing by kindergarten children may be different from that of adults. There was evidence of children's writing in their movement from oral language toward print.

Production and post-acceleration of intense ion beams in magnetically insulated gaps (open access)

Production and post-acceleration of intense ion beams in magnetically insulated gaps

Experiments are described pertaining to the development of very high current pulsed linear ion accelerators utilizing electron neutralization. These have application as inertial fusion drivers with intermediate mass ion beams of greatest interest. Progress has been made in a number of areas. A novel magnetically insulated gap using radial magnetic fields has been tested. It provides stable electron cloud confinement over microsecond time scales with no detectable leakage current. The gap can act as an ion injector when used in conjunction with a plasma source. Control of the electron cloud dynamics allows the injector to operate in an enhanced current density mode (10 to 50 times the Child-Langmuir limit) with high efficiency and with plasma source control of the current flow. Currents up to 20 kA at 100 kV applied voltage resulted when using a light ion flashboard. Carbon beams were produced by extraction from a flowing plasma from a gun array.

Oral History Interview with Otto Schwarz, August 7, 1979 (open access)

Oral History Interview with Otto Schwarz, August 7, 1979

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Otto Schwarz. Schwarz joined the Navy in 1940 after spending some time in the Civilian Conservation Corps. After training at San Diego, he went to Pearl Harbor and was assigned to the USS Lark (AM-21). Once in the Philippines, he was transferred to the USS Houston (CA-30) in June 1941. He remained aboard the Houston until she was sunk in March, 1942 off the Java coast. His battle station was in the powder magazine in the first turret. Schwarz remembers leaving his battle station and abandoning the ship. Toward dawn, Schwarz was picked up by a barge and taken ashore where he gathered with other survivors. They stayed in a civilian jail on Java for five or six weeks before going to Bicycle Camp in Batavia (Jakarta today). In October, Schwarz left Java aboard the Dai Nichi Maru bound for the POW camp Changi, Singapore. From there, he shipped to Burma and went to work on the railway to Thailand starting at the 14 Kilo Camp. During the construction, he suffered from tropical ulcers, malaria, beriberi, dysentery and dengue fever. When the railroad was completed, Schwarz went to …

Use of benefit-cost analysis in establishing Federal radiation protection standards: a review (open access)

Use of benefit-cost analysis in establishing Federal radiation protection standards: a review

This paper complements other work which has evaluated the cost impacts of radiation standards on the nuclear industry. It focuses on the approaches to valuation of the health and safety benefits of radiation standards and the actual and appropriate processes of benefit-cost comparison. A brief historical review of the rationale(s) for the levels of radiation standards prior to 1970 is given. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) established numerical design objectives for light water reactors (LWRs). The process of establishing these numerical design criteria below the radiation protection standards set in 10 CFR 20 is reviewed. EPA's 40 CFR 190 environmental standards for the uranium fuel cycle have lower values than NRC's radiation protection standards in 10 CFR 20. The task of allocating EPA's 40 CFR 190 standards to the various portions of the fuel cycle was left to the implementing agency, NRC. So whether or not EPA's standards for the uranium fuel cycle are more stringent for LWRs than NRC's numerical design objectives depends on how EPA's standards are implemented by NRC. In setting the numerical levels in Appendix I to 10 CFR 50 and 40 CFR 190 NRC and EPA, respectively, focused on the costs of compliance with various …
