Thermal cycle tests on double sided and multilayer printed wiring boards
Substantial differences were found in the capability of plated-through holes in both double sided and multilayer printed wiring boards to withstand thermal cycling between -65/sup 0/ and 125/sup 0/C. The circuit pattern used for the test contained 240 holes connected in series, 80 each of 0.51 mm, 0.76 mm and 1.02 mm dia. Double sided glass-epoxy and glass-polyimide boards withstood 544 cycles with a total circuit resistance increase of 2 percent. However, paper-epoxy boards revealed many open circuits and substantial electrical resistance increases for the same number of cycles. Considerable variation in electrical resistance increases in glass-epoxy multilayer boards was detected. Analysis of the behavior of the multilayer boards was clouded by the poor quality of the plated-through holes used. Current carrying capability provided a useful indication of hole degradation after cycling. A critical factor effecting plated-through hole reliability in thermal cycling environment appears to be laminate composition. Further testing is suggested to determine the necessity for additional property requirements for laminate procurement specifications, such as minimum glass transition temperature and/or designation of resin composition. Glass-polyimide laminates should be considered for multilayer boards which must withstand extreme thermal cycling environments.

Magma Energy Research Project. Project summary, July 1, 1974--June 30, 1975
The objective of the Magma Energy Research Project now under way at Sandia Laboratories is to investigate the feasibility of extracting energy directly from deeply buried circulating magma sources. Project plans describe a concept whereby a fully closed heat exchanger system is inserted directly into such a magma source to allow the heat energy to be brought to the surface with minimal environmental impact. A summary of previous efforts is given. The achievements and future plans for source location and definition, source tapping, magma characterization, magma materials compatibilities studies, and energy extraction studies are outlined. Bibliography of mass spectroscopy literature for 1973 compiled by a computer method. Bibliography and author index. [About 8,000 citations]
This report covers the year 1973, and lists approximately 8,000 articles of interest to mass spectroscopists. This report consists of three sections, a Bibliography section, an Author Index section and a Key Word Out of Context Index (KWOC Index) section. The Bibliography section lists the authors, the title and the publication data for each article. The Author Index lists the authors' names and the reference numbers of their articles. The KWOC Index lists the key words, the reference numbers of the articles in which the key word appears and the first 100 characters of the title.

FBSAM data transmission package for IBM 360/370 computers. [For rapid movement of large blocks of data directly between user storage arrays and magnetic disk data sets, in FORTRAN IV and assembly language]
The FBSAM subroutine package provides rapid movement of large blocks of data directly between user storage arrays and magnetic disk data sets. No buffer space is required. Large reductions in data transmission time and number of I/0 requests can be obtained. Moves can be concurrent with each other and with computation. A form of random access is available. A demonstration program provides a thorough test of all features. The package is intended for use by FORTRAN programers with little or no assembler language experience. It should be operable on most IBM 360/370 machines. A sample application to an I/0-bound code is discussed. The use of three concurrent functions entirely eliminated the real time associated with data transmission tasks by allowing them to proceed concurrently with other tasks. 2 figures, 1 table (auth)

Electron transfer processes in ion collisions with atomic hydrogen. Final report for period February 1, 1975--June 30, 1976
Results of experiments completed with Yale equipment coupled to the Oak Ridge Test Bench and Tandem Accelerator facilities are presented. Electron transfer cross sections have been measured at keV collision energies for B, C, N and O ions colliding with H, H/sub 2/, Ar and He gas targets. The ion charge states studied range from +2 through +5. Also reported are cross sections for Si and Fe ions on H, H/sub 2/ and Ar at energies between 1.5 and 14 MeV, with charge states varying between +5 and +13. Also measured were the cross sections for H/sup +/ collisions with H, H/sub 2/ and Ar for energies between 0.8 and 2.5 MeV. At keV energies the cross sections for highly charged B, C, N and O ions are found to be 1 x 10/sup -14/ cm/sup 2/. The cross sections for 4 MeV Fe ions scale roughly with the square of the ion charge, and have values as high as 0.5 x 10/sup -14/ cm/sup 2/ for Fe/sup 10 +/ + H collisions. A strong energy dependence is found for Fe ion collisions between 4 and 14 MeV. Previous results for MeV H/sup +/ + Ar collisions are nicely reproduced, …
