Positronium reactions with diamagnetic organic molecules (open access)

Positronium reactions with diamagnetic organic molecules

From 166th American Chemical Society national meeting; Chicago, Illinois, USA (26 Aug 1973). Rate constants for the interaction of ortho- positronium atoms with a series of diamagnetic organic compounds were determined. Nitrated aromatic molecules interact far more readily with orthopositronium than do nitrated aliphatic molecules. The observed rate constants for the aromatic molecules show a distinct dependency on the nature of the subsitituents and their relative positions in the aromatic ring. This dependency may be attributed to steiic interactions which influence the relative electron charge density on the atoms in the molecule and alter the molecular energy levels. (auth)

Stereochemistry of the decay-induced halogen exchange in diastereomeric alkyl halides in the gas phase (open access)

Stereochemistry of the decay-induced halogen exchange in diastereomeric alkyl halides in the gas phase

From 7th international hot atom chemistry symposium; Julich, F. R. Germany (10 Sep 1973). The stereochemistry of the halogen for halogen substitution at asymmetric carbon atoms, induced by energetic or thermal bromine and iodine species was studied in diastereomeric alkyl halide molecules such as d,1- and meso-2,3-dichlorobutane. Energetic /sup 80/Br species were generated via the /sup 80m/Br (I.T.)/sup 80/Br nuclear process in reactor produced CF/sub 3/ /sup 80m/Br and allowed to react with the substrate molecules while still possessing excess kinetic energy or after having become thermalized in collisions with argon atoms. /sup 125/I species were produced via the radioactive decay of / sup 125/Xe. The observed results show in unmoderated systems generally a predominance of those products which were formed in the halogen for halogen exchange process under retention of configuration. (auth)

pi. /sup +/p,. pi. /sup +/n, and. pi. /sup +/d interactions. A compilation. Part II. [Authors, title, abstract, references, beam, momentum, target, data tables, techniques]

A listing is presented of the 297 articles from which the data in Part I were abstracted. These listings contain additional information on each of these articles: authors, title, abstract, closely related references, beam, momenta of experiment, target, etc. One also gives tables of the data as they appeared in the original articles. Systematic comments are made specifying how the final data were obtained; for example, mass cuts for resonance production cross sections, spectator momentum cuts, corrections for systematic biases, etc. This information, extracted from the papers, is given to aid the reader in his evaluation of the results and in any comparison with other experiments.

Lymph Node Clearance of Plutonium From Subcutaneous Wounds in Beagles (open access)

Lymph Node Clearance of Plutonium From Subcutaneous Wounds in Beagles

The lymph node clearance of /sup 239/Pu O/sub 2/ administered as insoluble particles from subcutaneous implants was studied in adult beagles to simulate accidental contamination of hand wounds. External scintillation data were collected from the popliteal lymph nodes of each dog after 9.2 to 39.4 mu Ci of plutonium oxide was subcutaneously implanted into the left or right hind paws. The left hind paw was armputated 4 weeks after implantation to prevent continued deposition of plutonium oxide particles in the left popliteal lymph node. Groups of 3 dogs were sacrificed 4, 8, 16, and 32 weeks after plutonium implantation for histopathologic, electron microscopic, and radiochemical analysis of regional lymph nodes. An additional group of dogs received treatment with the chelating agent diethyenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA). Plutonium rapidly accumulated in the popliteal lymph nodes after subcutaneous injection into the hind paw, and 1 to 10% of the implant dose was present in the popliteal lymph nodes at the time of necropsy. Histopathologic changes in the popliteal lymph nodes with plutonium particles were characterized primarily by reticular cell hyperplasia, increased numbers of macrophages, necrosis, and fibroplasia. Eventually, the plutonium particles became sequestered by scar tissue that often replaced the entire architecture of the …
