[Strickling Town Post in Front of Fenced Grassy Area]

Slide of a signpost demarcating the site of Strickling, Texas. The post is on the far left, in front of a wire and wood fence that has been placed among tall, unkempt grasses. Small yellow inflections of color from the foliage can be seen behind it, with trees of varying heights in the very back. On the actual signpost, a line of text follows an emblem of the state of Texas, and it reads: "Site of town of Strickling -- Once a busy rural community. Named for Mrs. Martha (Webster) Strickling, who settled here in 1853 with husband Marmaduke. As child, she survived killing of some 30 settlers in infamous Webster massacre near Leander, and months of indian captivity. Post office opened here, 1857. And Strickling became a mail terminal and stage stop. Tons of lumber and buffalo hides were hauled through here. The town had a school, churches, a doctor's office, and stores. Strickling gradually declined when bypassed by the railroad, 1882. Only the cemetery remains. (1970)"

A Study of the Relationship Between Parental Attitudes and Illegitimacy (open access)

A Study of the Relationship Between Parental Attitudes and Illegitimacy

This study was concerned with the effect of parental attitudes and the illegitimacy rate among teenagers. A survey of the literature discussed many different factors affecting illegitimacy. Theorists have suggested poverty, lack of intelligence, mental abnormalities, and parental attitudes as a few of the causative factors. Also reviewed were areas such as the number of unwed mothers, their intelligence, the effect of the Negro subculture on the illegitimacy rate, the AFDC population and the illegitimate birth rate, and the background of pregnant out of wedlock mothers. The mother-daughter relationship was shown to be of importance in the likelihood of a teenage girl becoming pregnant out of wedlock. It was further suggested that dominance, ignorance, and possessiveness were important in the mother-daughter relationship. Four hypotheses proposed that there would be a significant difference between a group of mothers of teenagers with children born out of wedlock and a group of mothers whose daughters had never been pregnant. The first suggested that mothers of unwed. mothers would rate significantly higher on the possessiveness scale than mothers whose daughters have never been pregnant. The second proposed that mothers of daughters with out of wedlock children would rate significantly higher on the ignoring scale …

"The Passionate Struggle into Conscious Being": the Pollyanalytic Content of D. H. Lawrence's Novels

D. H. Lawrence left one of the most diverse collections of literary works ever contributed to the literature of the English language; the Lawrence canon contains a body of material which includes novels, short fiction, poetry, drama, literary criticism, travel essays, and philosophical writings. Since Lawrence is generally considered a novelist, the problem arises concerning the relationship between his novels and his other writings. In this case the concentration will be upon Lawrence's philosophical writings or what Lawrence called his pseudo-philosophy--his "pollyanalytics."

Philosophy of Coaching (open access)

Philosophy of Coaching

Joe Loudermilk grew up in Brownwood, Texas, graduating from Brownwood High School in 1959-60, playing football since Junior High School. He got his coaching degree from North Texas State University, where he played football. He played professional football for four years in the Canadian Football League before coaching high school football, mostly in west Texas. He coached the Lubbock High School Westerners for fifteen seasons, retiring in 2003-04, after a total of 48 years of football. Upon retirement, Joe Loudermilk returned to his home town of Brownwood, Texas. In 1970, he wrote this unpublished coaching manual. In a speech given to the Rotary Club of Brownwood, he stated the reason he began writing his coaching manual was in order to instill in his students the values with which he had been raised: “honesty, integrity, and character”. He wanted it to be a working manual that could be used every day, involving the athletes in the process.
