Failure of the Chapman-Jouguet Theory for Liquid and Solid Explosives
The usual treatment of unsupported detonation, often called the Chapman-Jouguet theory, is based on four assumptions: (1) the detonation approaches a steady state, (2) the flow is laminar and one dimensional, (3) the detonation products approach a state of chemical equilibrium some distance behind the detonation front, and (4) the detonation velocity is the minimum permitted by the conservation conditions. In a recent paper Wood and Fickett (Phys. Fluids 6, 648(1963)) proposed experiments to test the validity of the Chapman-Jouguet "theory", not requiring knowledge or assumptions about the nature of the equation of state of the detonation products, by making variations of the initial state or the explosive. In this paper we report the results of experiments in which (1) the initial state was varied by using mixtures of nitromethane and another liquid made or equal molar parts of nitric acid, acetonitrile, and water, which has the same atomic composition as nitromethane, and (2) the initial state was varied by using TNT as liquid and as solid. These results show that the Chapman-Jouguet theory is violated. The calculated pressures are 15% to 20% below the measured pressures. Results of measurements using other explosives are also presented to support the conclusion …

Modified Murnaghan equation of state applied to shock compression of silica, basalt, and dolomite
An equation of state previously used by the author is developed further and applied to geologic media. The equation is of the same form as the Murnaghan equation of state, but with the elastic constant terms replaced by the cohesive energy density (internal pressure), and the exponential term given as a sum of the Gruneisen parameter and the gaseous adiabatic exponent. Data for shock compression of silica, basalt, and dolomite are analyzed according to the equation.

Annual progress report of the U. S. C. Nuclear Physics Research Laboratory supported by US Atomic Energy Commission. [Dept. of Physics, Univ. of Southern California, 10/1/64-9/30/65]
Research activities for the period Oct. 1, 1964 to Sept. 30, 1965, are reported. Operation and machine improvements of the 31-MeV proton linac are described first. The bulk of the report deals with the experimental program, which was active in the following areas: angular correlation of coincident charged particles, pickup reactions, proton elastic and inelastic scattering, proton total cross sections, and penetration of charged particles in matter. The theoretical program is briefly summarized. (RWR)

Pictorial Studies of Molecules 1: Molecular Orbital Density Comparisons of H2, Li2, B2, C2, N2, O2, and F2
From Review of Theory: " In practice, a very close approximation to the molecular orbitals can be obtained in this way. Recent calculations of this type, utilizing analysis and computer programs developed by the author, have resulted in the determination of the molecular orbitals for a large number of diatomic molecules in the form of Eq. (2). These functions, which are thought to be very close to the Hartree-Fock (i.e., the molecular orbitals demanded by theory) result, were used in the pictorial calculations presented in this report."

The Ghostly Tales of Henry James
This study proposes first, to investigate the biographical and literary influences that led James to attempt the ghost story; second, to examine the stories themselves in light of James's theory of fiction, and to compare them with the tales of other writers; last, to consider James's ghosts as dramatized unseen realities which strongly affect human experience.

DATA SET FOR LOW-SPEED REMOTE TERMINALS
Data transmission over telephone lines involves the acceptance of serialized binary data, modulation of the data to a signal suitable to the bandwidth of the telephone. channel, transmission of the signal over the line, reception at the receiving end and demodulation of the signal to reproduce the original binary data. One typical application of data communication is between a low-speed terminal and a computer. In such a case, full-duplex operation is often desirable (i,e., transmission of information on the line in both directions simultaneously). The data set described in this report operates full-duplex and provides for channelization of the telephone line for the simultaneous use of several data sets. The data set can either be coupled to leased telephone lines or acoustically coupled to any telephone.

INSTABILITIES OF RELATIVISTIC PARTICLE BEAMS
The purpose of this paper is twofold: to introduce the reader to the subject of instabilities exhibited by relativistic particle beams, and to summarize the present state of our knowledge concerning these phenomena. Most of the material in the first part of the paper is not new. It has been known to some specialists for a good many years; what is new is that the problems that can be solved are now of much more interest to the general community of accelerator physicists. Consequently, many accelerator physicists who have not paid much attention to these matters may now want to become informed; it is my hope that this paper will provide an introduction to the field. The second part of the article consists of two sections. The first summarizes the experimental information presently available, with emphasis upon the degree to which it confirms or disagrees with theory. Our current level of understanding is delineated: considering the generality and reliability of the theoretical analysis as well as the degree of experimental confirmation, the author expresses his opinion as to what can be considered relatively well established. The final section contains a discussion of subjects needing further investigation and, consequently, supplements the …

Automatic Indexing: A State-of-the-Art Report
Report presenting a state-of-the-art survey of automatic indexing systems and experiments. It was conducted by the Research Information Center and Advisory Service on Information Processing, Information Technology Division, Institute for Applied Technology, National Bureau of Standards. Consideration is first given to indexes compiled by or with the aid of machines, including citation indexes. Advantages, disadvantages, and possibilities for modification and improvement are discussed. Experiments in automatic assignment indexing are summarized. Related research efforts in such areas as automatic classification and categorization, computer use of thesauri, statistical association techniques, and linguistic data processing are described. A major question is that of evaluation, particularly in view of evidence of human inter-indexer inconsistency. It is concluded that indexes based on words extracted from text are practical for many purposes today.
