Airborne Reconnaissance Survey of Northwestern Arizona (Arizona Strip) and Southwestern Utah

Abstract: From December 1953 to May 1954 an extensive airborne reconnaissance program was conducted in northwestern Arizona (Arizona Strip) and southwestern Utah. Five surface anomalies were detected, one of which has possible commercial value. All anomalies are within the boundaries of National Park Service jurisdiction, consequently, this report is not for public distribution until clearance is obtained from the National Park Service. A preliminary airborne reconnaissance program was also conducted in the Richfield area. No anomalies were discovered.

Lift and Pitching Moment at Supersonic Speeds Due to Constant Vertical Acceleration for Thin Sweptback Tapered Wings With Streamwise Tips: Supersonic Leading and Trailing Edges

Note presenting the nondimensional lift derivative and the corresponding pitching-moment derivative resulting from constant vertical acceleration as evaluated for a family of thin sweptback tapered wings with streamwise tips traveling at supersonic speeds. The analysis is applicable at those speeds for which the wing leading and trailing edges are both supersonic, provided that the Mach lines from the wing apex intersect the trailing edge and that the Mach line from the leading edge of one tip does not intersect the remote half-wing.

Application of several methods for determining transfer functions and frequency response of aircraft from flight data (open access)

Application of several methods for determining transfer functions and frequency response of aircraft from flight data

In the process of analyzing the longitudinal frequency-response characteristics of aircraft, information on some of the methods of analysis has been obtained by the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. In the investigation of these methods, the practical applications and limitations were stressed. In general, the methods considered may be classed as: (1) analysis of sinusoidal response, (2) analysis of transient response as to harmonic content through determination of the Fourier integral by manual or machine methods, and (3) analysis of the transient through the use of least-squares solutions of the coefficients of an assumed equation for either the transient time response or frequency response (sometimes referred to as curve-fitting methods). Theoretical Effect of Diffusion on Isotopic Abundance Ratios in Rocks and Associated Fluids (open access)

Theoretical Effect of Diffusion on Isotopic Abundance Ratios in Rocks and Associated Fluids

From Abstract: "It is proposed that diffusion be considered as a possible process of isotope fractionation taking place throughout geologic time. Both diffusion in solids and in liquids are considered as possible mechanisms, the latter being more important. Arguments are presented which show that if significant fractionation takes place within a crystal by outward diffusion under solid state conditions, enrichment will be evident only in elements of minor concentration."

Thorium and rare earth minerals in the Powderhorn district, Gunnison County, Colorado (open access)

Thorium and rare earth minerals in the Powderhorn district, Gunnison County, Colorado

"Thorium deposits were discovered in the Powderhorn district in 1949. This district has long been known for its occurrences of alkalic igneous rocks, of which the best known is the Iron Hill complex (Larsen, 1942). Some of these alkalic rocks contain titanium, barium, strontium, rare earths, thorium, and niobium in greater percentages than those of most igneous rocks. A study of the thorium deposits was undertaken to obtain more information on the geologic relation of minor elements, particularly rare earths, and thorium, to alkalic igneous rocks, and to evaluate the economic significance of the Thorium deposits."

Separations Chemistry, Quarterly Progress Report, July-September 1953

"Continued progress has been made with the high temperature decontamination processes for irradiated uranium fuel. The fused salt treatment of molten uranium has been extended to UCl3. Plutonium and rare earths were extracted into the UCl3 phase. Direct plutonium distillation from molten irradiated uranium has been scaled up to the hundred gram scale. Solid scavenging experiments using uranium oxide, uranium carbide, and uranium nitride in contact with molten uranium have indicated fission product removal. A scaled-up investigation of the separation and recover of uranium from an SIR type ceramic fuel using the volatile fluoride process has indicated the feasibility of this separation method. The effect of irradiation on the decomposition of BrF3 has been further studies in experiments using the NAA statitron.'

Preliminary Report on the Geology and Uranium Deposits of South Elk Ridge, San Juan County, Utah

From abstract: Elk Ridge is in southeastern Utah in the central part of San Juan County. It forms a conspicuous ridge on the north end of the Monument upwarp. During the summer of 1953 field work was largely restricted to South Elk Ridge, that part of Elk Ridge which is south of The Notch. Permian and Triassic sedimentary rocks crop out in the area and Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks are exposed east of the area.

Separations Chemistry, Quarterly Progress Report, January-March 1954

"Scale-up work on high temperature fuel recovery processes has progressed to the point where the (high temperature) vacuum furnace for several operations to the hot cells has been completed and tested under operating conditions. Small scale experiments on high temperature methods for processing molten irradiated uranium fuel have been made with spent X-10 fuel slug pieces. The results of direct Pu evaporation, treatment with fused fluorides and oxide scavenging were every similar to those found with tracer experiments."
