FURTHER RESULTS ON THE PRODUCTION OF NEUTRAL MESONS BY PHOTONS (open access)

FURTHER RESULTS ON THE PRODUCTION OF NEUTRAL MESONS BY PHOTONS

Further measurements have been made on the photoproduction of neutral mesons using the gamma-gamma coincidence technique. New data have been obtained on the gamma-gamma correlation curves in beryllium. The angular distribution of the photo mesons in Be has been determined and found to be strongly peaked forward. The dependence on the atomic number A of production has been found to obey an A{sup2/3} law. Some data obtained for production in hydrogen show that the pi-zero and pi-plus production cross sections are comparable and that the pi-zero excitation curve starts more slowly from threshold than does the pi-plus photo excitation curve.

Criticality Calculations for Hydrogen Moderated Reactors From Microscopic Data (open access)

Criticality Calculations for Hydrogen Moderated Reactors From Microscopic Data

From abstract: "The probability for a fission neutron to escape fast leakage from bare, hydrogen moderated reactors is calculated by a method utilizing only the microscopic cross section of the materials. These results can be employed to determine the effectiveness of other substances in preventing fast neutron leakage. These calculations are carried out for aluminum and iron."

The Evaluation of Definite Integrals, and a Quasi-Monte-Carlo Method Based on the Properties of Algebraic Numbers (open access)

The Evaluation of Definite Integrals, and a Quasi-Monte-Carlo Method Based on the Properties of Algebraic Numbers

A formula is given for the approximate evaluation of multiple definite integrals using the ergodic property of a certain transformation of the unit cube into itself. Estimates of the rate of convergence are made for sufficiently smooth integrand. The work was motivated by a belief, that appeared at one time justified, that a substantial improvement of the accuracy of Monte Carlo method would result from use of the principles described herein. Although that belief proved groundless in numerical tests, it is deemed worthwhile to give this report of the work. Part of the theoretical development, the work of L.G. Peck, will be reported independently. (auth)

An Evaluation of Courses of Study for Teaching the Social Studies in the Primary Grades

The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to read and analyze professional literature to determine criteria for an adequate social-studies program in an elementary grade, and (2) to evaluate a selected number of courses of study of large-city school systems and state departments of education to determine the extent to which they meet criteria.

NUCLEAR SHELL STRUCTURE AND $beta$-DECAY I. ODD A NUCLEI II. EVEN A NUCLEI (open access)

NUCLEAR SHELL STRUCTURE AND $beta$-DECAY I. ODD A NUCLEI II. EVEN A NUCLEI

A systematics is given of all transitions for odd A nuclei for which sufficiently reliable data are available. The allowed or forbidden characters of the transitions are correlated with the positions of the initial and final odd nucleon groups in the nuclear shell scheme. The nuclear shells show definite characteristics with respect to parity of the ground states. The latter is the same as the one obtained from known spins and magnetic moments in a one-particle interpretation.

The Hydrolysis Products of Tributyl Phosphate and Their Effect on the Tributyl Phosphate Process for Uranium Recovery (open access)

The Hydrolysis Products of Tributyl Phosphate and Their Effect on the Tributyl Phosphate Process for Uranium Recovery

A study was made of the stability of tributyl phosphate (TBP) to acids, bases, and UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/su)/sub 2/ solutions, and of the chemistry of its decomposition products. The effect of such decomposition products on the extraction behavior of ion of MBP and lines the RAW analyzer and a subsequent reduction of feed flow rate in each case resulted in immediate reduction in losses, as evidenced by the polarographic results. In many such instances, several hours of operation at high waste losses were avoided. A dropping mercury electrode was used for stream analysis, and the RAW solution was analyzed directiy without either dilution or addition of supporting eleclrolyte. Removal of dissolved oxygen and control of temperature were urnecessary. The precision of the method was better than plus or minus 5%, and the accuracy, which is dependent on calibration with a standard solution, was well within the precision value. The calibration curve is linear, for practical purposes, up to approximately 8 g/l UNH or 0.032 lb/gal uranium. (auth)
