Report on airborne radioactivity surveys and the uranium deposits in the Red River region of Texas and Oklahoma (open access)

Report on airborne radioactivity surveys and the uranium deposits in the Red River region of Texas and Oklahoma

The U. S. Atomic Energy Commission conducted an airborne radioactivity survey of the Red River region of Texas and Oklahoma beginning in December 1955 and ending in May 1956. All or parts of Archer, Clay, and Montague Counties in northern Texas and Carter, Cotton, Jefferson, and Stephens Counties in southern Oklahoma were surveyed. Particular attention was paid to those areas where exposures are found of red beds of the Permian Wichita Group. Field examinations were conducted of anomalies discovered by airborne reconnaissance as well as those reported by private individuals. Forty localities were examined, the majority in sandstones, siltstones, or conglomerates. Uranium and copper minerals were identified at several localities. Ferruginous staining, bleaching of the sandstone color, calcium carbonate cement, and carbonized plant remains are common to the deposits

Propagation of Long Wavelength Disturbances in a Plasma (open access)

Propagation of Long Wavelength Disturbances in a Plasma

"The long wavelength modes of excitation of a two component plasma in a steady magnetic field are examined. Two linearized Boltzmann equations are given with collision terms which are coupled through the difference in temperatures and difference in velocities of the two gases. A formal means of classification of phenomena is described in terms of the nature of the roots about k = 0. Two types of behavior are uncovered: MHD, magnetohydrodynamics, which include finite phase speed phenomena near k = 0; and PEM, plasma electromagnetics, which includes infinite phase speed phenomena near k = 0. The dissipative effects of collisions are included. In the limit of vanishing collision frequency, roots previously obtained are recaptured. The relevance of the pertinent domains are discussed and the complex interplay between the fast and Alfven modes of MHD and the plasma- magnetic modes of PEM is demonstrated. Equations macroscopic in appearance are derived which include the effects of the initial configuration. In the limit of large collision frequency the equations reduce to standard forms. The dispersion of the Nth order Larmor resonance is given which includes the effect of the mass ratio. A discussion of the transfer equations of a plasma is included."

Geology and Uranium Evaluation of the Precambrian Quartz-Pebble Conglomerates of the Needle Mountains, Southwest Colorado: Final Report (open access)

Geology and Uranium Evaluation of the Precambrian Quartz-Pebble Conglomerates of the Needle Mountains, Southwest Colorado: Final Report

From purpose of study: The Vallecito Conglomerate of the Needle Mountains area in southwestern Colorado was studied to evaluate the uranium potential of the unit and to test the applicability of the uraniferous Precambrian pebble-conglomerate exploration model in this area. The main thrust of this project is the Vallecito Conglomerate, but the Uncompahgre Formation, which is also in the Needle Mountains area has basal conglomerate that was investigated in a reconnaissance mode. Five specific objectives have been formulated to meet the overall purpose of this project, and these include: a) Determine the uranium distribution in the Vallecito Conglomerate and the basal conglomerate of the Uncompahgre Formation. b) Evaluate the uranium resources of the area to the degree possible utilizing available information and personal field investigations. c) Test the validity of application of the Precambrian quartz-pebble conglomerate model to this area. d) Recommend detailed studies and delineate drilling sites in the area to further evaluate the uranium resources if warranted. e) Recommend additional geologic, geophysical and geochemical studies which would bear directly on evaluation of uranium resources of the Precambrian pebble conglomerates in the Needle Mountains area.

The Photoproduction of Mesons from Hydrogen (open access)

The Photoproduction of Mesons from Hydrogen

In an effort to gain information on the nature of the photon-meson and photon-nucleon interaction, a study of the artificial production of mesons by photons has been made at the Berkeley synchrotron. The major effort of this research was concentrated on a measurement of the energy and angular distribution of u+-mesons produced when the photons strike a target of liquid hydrogen. Detection of the mesons is accomplished electronically by the technique of delayed coincidence.

On the Kinetic Theory of Steady Gas Flows (open access)

On the Kinetic Theory of Steady Gas Flows

An approximate Boltzmann equation, known as the single relaxation model is studied here. This equation is linearized and the fundamental solution is considered. Following N. Grad, the solution, asymptotic in small values of the ratio of mean-free-path to distance from the origin, is sought. It can be shown that the fundamental solution itself gives the asymptotic description of the flow field past an object. This solution gives the asymptotic description when the distance from the origin is much greater than either the mean-free-path or the body size. This is true independently of the Knudsen number.

A Geologic Report on the San Rafael Swell Drilling Project, San Rafael Swell, Utah

From abstract: Twenty-two holes totaling 34,874 feet (10,629.6 meters) were rotary and core drilled on the northern and western flanks of the San Rafael Swell to test fluvial-lacustrine sequences of the Morrison Formation and the lower part of the Chinle Formation. The objective of the project was to obtain subsurface data so that improved uranium resource estimates could be determined for the area.

Sound Propagation according to Kinetic Models (open access)

Sound Propagation according to Kinetic Models

"Sound propagation and the initial value problem in kinetic theory are investigated. Linearized forms of certain kinetic models suggested by Gross and Jackson employed. The most general model contains three relaxation times and is capable of producing Euler, Navier-Strokes, Burnett and thirteen moments equations for smooth phenomena. A study of dispersion relations is made and some novel features are uncovered. One finds that kinetic models are unable to describe phenomena of higher than a certain wave number, the latter depending on the model chosen. It compensates for this by introducing an interesting but unphysical dispersion picture for high wave numbers. It is further suggested by one of the models that the phase speed of sound waves achieves a maximum value. Existence, uniqueness, and boundedness of solutions of the initial value problem are shown for any model equations. It is further shown that asymptotically the solutions become hydrodynamical."
