Electrical Properties of the Tungsten Bronzes (open access)

Electrical Properties of the Tungsten Bronzes

From abstract: "The electrical resistivity of NaxWO3, LixWO3, and KxWO3 has been measured at 300°K. The range of x-values was 0.25 < x < 0.9. All resistivities were characteristic of a metal and lie on a single curve. An extrapolation of the conductivity curve to zero conductivity indicated that the tungsten bronzes should be semiconductors for x < 0.25. The resistivities that have been measured for tungsten bronzes with x < 0.25 showed semiconducting behavior. The resistivity of LixWO3 exhibited an anomalous peak in the ρ vs Τ cuve. The Hall coefficient of Li0.37WO3 indicated one free electron per alkali atom as was previously found for NaxWO3. The Seebeck coefficient of NaxWO3 depended linearly on x[superscript]-2/3 as expected from free electron theory. The implications of these and some other data are discussed."

The Numerical Solution of a Parabolic System of Differential Equations Arising in Shallow Water Theory (open access)

The Numerical Solution of a Parabolic System of Differential Equations Arising in Shallow Water Theory

"A finite difference approximation to a non-linear set of parabolic differential equations arising in shallow water theory is given. These difference equations were used to determine the shape and rate of propagation of a hum of fluid down a channel of constant depth. The hump of fluid was found to spread instead of steepen, as is the case in the usual shallow water theory."

Technical and economic potentials of shale oil production by nuclear explosives (open access)

Technical and economic potentials of shale oil production by nuclear explosives

"In the following report, a new technology is discussed which was first proposed in 1959, but which has been developed mainly since 1964; the in situ production of oil from shale by large underground retorts created by nuclear explosives. The first part of the present report describes this new process; the second part gives an analysis of the United States and the world endowments with crude oil resources and oil shale deposits and finally, the third part deals with expected cost estimates of this new technology as compared with present crude oil prices and potential costs of conventional shale oil production."

Geologic Evaluation of Uranium in Plutonic Rocks, Northwestern Arizona: Status Report (open access)

Geologic Evaluation of Uranium in Plutonic Rocks, Northwestern Arizona: Status Report

From introduction: This report is a status report to complete present contract obligations and is submitted in lieu of a Final Report. A Final Report is not feasible especially until complete analyses and statistical treatment of all of the 436 rock chip, 2 soil-rock and 90 water samples, a total of 528 samples submitted by the partners to Union Carbide, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, plus remaining analyses to be run by BFEC's Grand Junction Laboratory become available and other recommendations and necessities are done. See subsequent section of this report titled: "Recommendations For Work Needed to Complete Final Report". A Final Report may be prepared by the partners if supplemental funds for such work and for completion of the analyses and their statistical treatment ever become available.

One Million Frame per Second Camera (open access)

One Million Frame per Second Camera

The design and construction of a 1,000,000 fps rotating mirror frame camera is described. Twenty five consecutive pictures 20 mm in diameter can be obtained on a strip of 35 mm film. A resolution of at least 20 lines/mm is obtained on a moderately fast film like Linagraph Shellburst. Accurate synchronization of the event to be photographed is required. The camera has been most useful in the investigation of explosive and related phenomena.

Equilibrium Configuration of a Plasma in the Guiding Center Limit (open access)

Equilibrium Configuration of a Plasma in the Guiding Center Limit

"We compute the equilibrium configuration of a collision-free plasma contained in an axially symmetric magnetic field. The plasma is characterized by a non-scalar pressure tensor which is obtained from a microscopic distribution function in a form suggested b the guiding center approximation. The solution is calculated in the limit where the ratio of the width to the length of the plasma region and the ratio of the gas to the magnetic pressure are both small. Boundary values at the midplane as well as the shape of the plasma appear as arbitrary parameters in the solution. We give the solution to a corresponding scalar pressure problem for comparison."

Electrical and Optical Investigation of Charge-Carrier Trapping in Rutile Single Crystals (open access)

Electrical and Optical Investigation of Charge-Carrier Trapping in Rutile Single Crystals

"Low-frequency absorption centers, observed by electrical measurements in single crystals of rutile, can be produced by thermal quenching or optical irradiation in the edge of the eigen absorption region (600 A). They are observed when electric fields are applied parallel to the optic axis (crystallographic c axis) and are not visible with the field perpendicular to this axis. The temperature dependence of the principal dispersion indicates an activation energy of 0.18 ev. The centers can be explained by a localized electron transfer process along the optic axis. The introduction of silver and copper by thermal diffusion did not produce low frequency absorption spectra."
