Target Thickness Dependence of Cu K X-Ray Production for Ions Moving in Thin Solid Cu Targets
Measurements of the target thickness dependence of the target x-ray production yield for incident fast heavy ions are reported for thin solid Cu targets as a function of both incident projectile atomic number and energy. The incident ions were F, Al, Si, S, and CI. The charge state of the incident ions was varied in each case to study the target x-ray production for projectiles which had an initial charge state, q, of q = Z₁, q = Z₁ - 1, and q < Z₁ - 1 for F, Al, Si, and S ions and q = Z₁ - 1 and q < Z₁ - 1 for C1 ions. The target thicknesses ranged from 2 to 183 ug/cm². In each case the Cu K x-ray yield exhibits a complex exponential dependence on target thickness. A two-component model which includes contributions to the target x-ray production due to ions with 0 and 1 K vacancies and a three-component model which includes contributions due to ions with 0, 1, and 2 K vacancies are developed to describe the observed target K x-ray yields. The two-component model for the C1 data and the three-component model for the F, Al, Si, S, and C1 …

Quantitative analysis of soil chromatography. I. Water and radionuclide transport
Soil chromatography has been used successfully to evaluate relative mobilities of pesticides and nuclides in soils. Its major advantage over the commonly used suspension technique is that it more accurately simulates field conditions. Under such conditions the number of potential exchange sites is limited both by the structure of the soil matrix and by the manner in which the carrier fluid moves through this structure. The major limitation of the chromatographic method, however, has been its qualitative nature. This document represents an effort to counter this objection. A theoretical basis is specified for the transport both of the carrier eluting fluid and of the dissolved constituent. A computer program based on this theory is developed which optimizes the fit of theoretical data to experimental data by automatically adjusting the transport parameters, one of which is the distribution coefficient k/sub d/. This analysis procedure thus constitutes an integral part of the soil chromatographic method, by means of which mobilities of nuclides and other dissolved constituents in soils may be quantified.

High efficiency thin-film GaAs solar cells. First interim report, March 1--August 30, 1977
The objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of producing high-efficiency (15% or greater) thin-film GaAs solar cells with costs suitable for terrestrial solar electric power generation. The approach is that of growing GaAs by organio-metallic chemical vapor deposition on recrystallized germanium (Ge) films previously deposited on metal substrates and fabricating AMOS (Antireflecting Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) solar cells on the GaAs. Previously it had been determined that a water vapor-grown native oxide (temperature = 25/sup 0/C) was the most useful native oxide for AMOS cells. A new chemical surface preparation prior to oxide growth led to more uniform oxides and reduced interface contamination, yielding lower reverse saturation current densities, a near-unity diode ideality factor, and better reproducibility. Substituting silver (Ag) for gold metallization showed no change in starting cell efficiency, but did greatly improve high temperature stability of the AMOS solar cell. A new study was completed on antireflection coatings on AMOS GaAs solar cells, taking into account the spectral response of the cell and nature of the solar spectra, and the results submitted for publication. XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) studies had found earlier that the more efficient native oxides had primarily As/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and Ga/sub 2/O/sub 3/ with little GaAsO/sub 4/. …

Niobium--tin deals toroidal magnet system for a high field ignition test reactor
Using a High Field Ignition Test Reactor application based on the Tokamak magnetic confinement approach, a three-month study effort focused on developing a feasible demountable DEALS toroidal magnet system design which would simplify the construction of the magnet and reactor, as well as facilitate future maintenance during long-term operation. This target was successfully achieved. The overall DEALS design is described, together with the basic reactor parameters. Detailed stress analyses for the support structure are given, together with magnet and conductor specifications. Preliminary electrical contact tests relating to joint design are also discussed.

Inverse scattering problem for quarkonium systems. I. One-dimensional formalism and methodology. [bound state, algebraic technique]
The inverse scattering formalism for reflectionless potentials is applied to the reconstruction of confining potentials from bound-state properties. An explicit algebraic technique is presented and tested on several one-dimensional examples. The connection with a classical problem of interacting solitons is exhibited. 27 references.

Selected constituents in the smoke of domestic low tar cigarettes
Thirty-two brands of domestic commercial low tar and nicotine cigarettes were analyzed for their production of tar, nicotine, nitrogen oxides (as nitric oxide), hydrogen cyanide, acrolein, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide under standard analytical smoking conditions. Results are compared with published data for certain brands.

Will Made Word and Other Conceptions
This thesis consists of a series of nine poems which deal with the theme of finding a balance between energy and form in life and in poetry. Fourteen miscellaneous poems are also included. In addition, an introduction by the author explains the purpose of the thesis as a whole and explicates the poems in terms of this purpose. The introduction discusses the meaning of each poem and the techniques used to convey its message. Each poem in the series of nine poems is also related to the. overall theme of the series.
