"The rocket-propelled-model technique has been applied to the investigation of low-lift buffeting. Results of preliminary tests show that severe buffeting, wing dropping, and normal-force changes occur almost simultaneously near zero lift over a Mach number range near 0.9 on unswept wings 12 percent thick. On unswept wings 7 percent thick, buffeting did not occur; however, mild wing dropping and normal-force changes were experienced" (p. 1).

Report discussing the heating of a plasma which passes through a series of magnetic pumping cells by applying the second-order theory of transit-time heating developed by Berger and Newcomb. From abstract: "Transit-time magnetic pumping in single-transit systems seems to be a feasible method of increasing plasma energy by amounts of the order of a factor of 10."

Report presenting an analysis of the effects of compressibility on the pressure coefficients of several bodies of revolution by comparing experimentally determined pressure coefficients with corresponding pressure coefficients calculated by the use of linearized equations of compressible flow. The results indicated that the theoretical methods predict the subsonic pressure-coefficient changes over the central portion of the body but do not predict the pressure-coefficient changes near the nose.

Report presenting an investigation of the methods of analyzing longitudinal frequency-response characteristics of aircraft. The methods considered are analysis of sinusoidal response, analysis of transient response to harmonic content through determination of the Fourier integral, and analysis of the transient through the use of least-squares solutions of the coefficients of an assume equation for the transient time or frequency response.

The following document is meant to facilitate an analysis and review of historical counts of the Hawaiian monk seal. Provided here are tables ordered on an island-by-island or atoll-by-atoll basis, beginning in the early 1800s and on through the 1980s.

Abstract: Research on the Laysan Island population of the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, Monachus schauinslandi, was conducted from 2 march to 30 November 1985. census totals excluding pups ranged from 76 to 147, an average increase of nearly 20 animals from the 1984 census results. Overall monthly haul-out distribution for all seals showed highest use in the north ecological unit followed by the west unit. Relatively few animals hauled out in the eastern and southern portions of the island. Interatoll movement of nine seals was documented, resulting in a net increase of three animals to the Laysan Island population.

From Introduction: "The Front Range region from the Wyoming-Colorado state line to southern Colorado is a uranium metallogenic province. Correspondingly, uranium has been discovered in mineable deposits in metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary rocks formed throughout the geologic history of the region both within the Front Range itself and in the apron of sedimentary rocks that surrounds the Front Range. The Pueblo 1ºx2º National Topographic Map Series (NTMS) quadrangle, Colorado (Fig. 1), which lies within this uranium metallogenic providence, was evaluated to identify and delineate areas and geologic units that exhibit characteristics favorable for the occurrence of uranium deposits."

We report on experiments run on a set of shared-memory multiprocessors. Our goal was to demonstrate that one could conveniently utilize a set of shared-memory multiprocessors cooperatively working on typical state-space searches. We utilized a technology for writing portable code for multiprocessors, coded three depth-first state-space searches, and ran them on a set of multiprocessors. The final problem used substantial resources (over 65 hours on a single processor) and was successfully distributed over four distinct shared memory multiprocessors (2 Sequents and 2 Encores), reducing the time to perform the computation to slightly over 2 hours.

The domain and surface structures of metallic sodium tungsten bronzes, NaxWO₃, 0.4 < x < 1, were studied using optical microscopy, supplemented by chemical methods, photoelectron spectroscopy, electron microscopy, etc. The birefringent, multidomain structure of the bronze is exhibited by a sodium-deficient, epitaxial surface film and hence is not, as reported elsewhere, a bulk property. The film can be synthesized by anodic electrolysis in alkaline solution and can exist only epitaxially with the substrate. It is chemically inert, translucent, and often laminated to a multilayered film. The film domain is hypersensitive to lateral stress and to thermal change, and appears to be modulated by minute structural changes of the substrate. This epitaxial modulation of the film is strikingly large at the phase transitions of the substrate induced by slightly different tiltings of the oxygen octahedra. The domain-wall movement is often slow enough to be visible, and that by thermal effect is occasionally accompanied by an audible, high-pitched, snapping sound.
