A Study of L-Shell X-Ray Production Cross Sections Due to [Hydrogen-1], [Helium-4], and [Lithium-7] Ion Bombardment of Selected Thin Rare Earth and ₈₂Pb Targets (open access)

A Study of L-Shell X-Ray Production Cross Sections Due to [Hydrogen-1], [Helium-4], and [Lithium-7] Ion Bombardment of Selected Thin Rare Earth and ₈₂Pb Targets

Thin target L-Shell x-ray production cross sections for protons incident on ₆₂Sm and ₇₀Yb in the energy range of 0.3 to 2.4 MeV/amu, alpha particles incident on ₆₂Sm, ₇₀Yb, and ₈₂Pb in the energy range of 0.15 to 4.8 MeV/amu, and lithium ions incident on ₅₈Ce, ₆₀Nd, ₆₂Sm, ₆₆Dy, ₆₇Ho, ₇₀Yb, and ₈₂Pb in the energy range of 0.8 to 4.4 MeV/amu have been measured. The cross section data have been compared to the planewave Born approximation (PWBA) and the PWBA modified to include binding energy and Coulomb deflection effects. The Lα₁,₂ x-ray production cross sections are best represented by the PWBA modified to include both the binding energy and Coulomb deflection effects (PWBA-BC) over the entire incident ion, incident energy, and target ranges studied. However, the Lγ₁ and Lγ₂,₃,₍₆₎ x-ray production cross sections are best represented by the PWBA except at the lower ion energies, where both the PWBA and PWBA-BC are in disagreement with the data. The comparison of Lα₁,₂/Lγ₂,₃,₍₆₎ ratios to theory reveals that the PWBA-BC does not predict the inflection point substantiated by the data, and the agreement between the data and the PWBA-BC becomes worse as the atomic number of the incident ion increases. Comparison …

A Comparison of Two Models for Training Personnel for Teaching the Moderately and Severely Retarded (open access)

A Comparison of Two Models for Training Personnel for Teaching the Moderately and Severely Retarded

The problem of this study is the effect of two training models on personnel who teach moderately and severely retarded children. The subjects of this study were sixty-two staff members who work with the moderately and severely retarded pupils in two large metropolitan school systems. Eighteen teachers, eighteen aides, and twenty-six volunteers participated in the study. Two observation instruments administered by trained observers were used as pre- and post-tests to measure the trainees' competencies in applying operant conditioning techniques in both group and one-to-one instructional situations. The purposes of this study were (1) to compare the effectiveness of an experiential model and a didactic model in preparing personnel to deliver cues and reinforcers when working with moderately and severely retarded children; (2) to compare the costs of equipment and supervisory personnel; and (3) to examine the relationship between the trainees' effectiveness of delivering cues and reinforcers to a group of moderately and severely retarded youngsters and the on-task behavior of those students. This report concludes that the trainees' self-evaluation of the training models indicated that they prefer simulated techniques and feedback, which denotes that the Experiential Model may foster certain kinds of incidental learning such as physical mannerisms and visual …

History of Met Lab Section C-I, May 1943 to April 1944 (open access)

History of Met Lab Section C-I, May 1943 to April 1944

This is part of a history of the research work of Seaborg and associates in the University of Chicago Metallurgical Laboratory, Chemistry Section C-I. The work was concerned with the development of chemical procedures for the extraction of plutonium, for the purification of plutonium, and for research on the isotopes of other heavy elements including other transuranium elements. The style of the history is that of a diary with footnotes giving additional information. (DLC)

Seismological investigations in geothermal regions (open access)

Seismological investigations in geothermal regions

Seismological methods, including studies of microearthquakes, P- and S-wave velocities and P-wave attenuation were investigated as tools for the exploration and delineation of geothermal resources. Seismograms from explosions and microearthquakes were examined for changes in frequency content and relative arrival times across a known geothermal area, The Geysers, California, and a potential geothermal region, Grass Valley, Nevada. Microearthquakes within the two regions were examined for evidence of spatial variations in radiated P- and S-waves. Additional information concerning Basin and Range structure was provided by regional refraction studies. Detailed structural analysis in Grass Valley was obtained by commercial reflection and refraction work. Heat flow modeling, consistent with structure inferred by seismological techniques, was used to discriminate between conductive and convective heat flow anomalies in Grass Valley. Concentrated observations in Grass Valley around Leach Hot Springs revealed moderate microearthquake activity on a trend crossing the southern end of the valley, with occasional swarms in the area of high heat flow (4 to 6 hfu) at the north end of the 1915 Pleasant Valley earthquake (mag = 7.5) fault trace. Studies in The Geysers steam field reveal significant velocity and attenuation anomalies associated with the production zone. It is concluded that with proper …
