Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Horizontal Tails 1: Unswept and 35 Degrees Swept-Back Plan Forms of Aspect Ratio 3 (open access)

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Horizontal Tails 1: Unswept and 35 Degrees Swept-Back Plan Forms of Aspect Ratio 3

Memorandum presenting the results of a wind-tunnel investigation of the low-speed characteristics of horizontal tails of aspect ratio 3 with unswept and swept-back plan forms. Two models were tested which had identical areas, aspect ratio, taper ratio, and airfoil section, differing only in the angle of sweepback and elevator area ratios. The major effect of sweepback was to increase the rate of change of hinge-moment coefficient with angle of attack, to reduce the rate of change with elevator deflection, and to reduce the elevator effectiveness.

The Ames Supersonic Free-Flight Wind Tunnel

Memorandum presenting a description of the Ames supersonic free-flight wind tunnel, which is a new piece of equipment for aerodynamic research at high supersonic Mach numbers. It has a wide Mach number range extending from low supersonic speeds to Mach numbers in excess of 10. The air stream in the tunnel is imperfect, mainly due to a symmetrical pair of oblique shock waves which reflect down the test section.

Effect of air distribution on radial temperature distribution in one-sixth sector of annular turbojet combustor (open access)

Effect of air distribution on radial temperature distribution in one-sixth sector of annular turbojet combustor

Report presenting an experimental investigation in a one-sixth sector of an annular turbojet combustor to determine a method of controlling radial exhaust-gas-temperature distribution in a gas-turbine combustion chamber. The adjustment in controlling air was made by ducting the dilution air into the combustion zone in a predetermined manner through hollow radial struts or by modifying the basket-wall open-hole area. Results regarding the temperature distribution, temperature-rise efficiency, total-pressure loss, and altitude operating limits are provided.

The calculation of drag for airfoil sections and bodies of revolution at subcritical speeds (open access)

The calculation of drag for airfoil sections and bodies of revolution at subcritical speeds

Report presenting a method for calculating the drag, in a real compressible fluid and at subcritical Mach numbers, of airfoil sections at arbitrary life coefficients and of bodies of revolution at zero angle of attack. The values of drag coefficient are compared with values obtained for the same configurations by other methods. The differences between the results are found to lie withint he limits of accuracy of current experimental techniques.

Trafficability of Soils: Effects of Surface Conditions on Drawbar Pull of a Wheeled Vehicle (open access)

Trafficability of Soils: Effects of Surface Conditions on Drawbar Pull of a Wheeled Vehicle

"A study was conducted to (a) investigate the effects of soil surface conditions on one-pass drawbar pull capabilities of a wheeled vehicle, (b) relate optimum drawbar pull to soil strength as measured by several instruments, (c) develop tentative equations for predicting optimum tractive coefficient, and (d) determine effects of tire characteristics (tread pattern and deflection) on drawbar pull. One hundred and six drawbar pullslip tests were conducted with a 3/4-ton M37 truck at a gross weight of 7240 lb. One tire size (9.00-16, 8-PR), two tread patterns (smooth and nondirectional military), and two tire deflections (15% and 35%) were tested. Surface conditions varied from dry and firm, to wetted with small amounts of water, to flooded. Asphalt surfaces also were tested" (p. xi).
