A Limited Correlation of Atmospheric Sounding Data and Turbulence Experienced by Rocket-Powered Models

Note presenting an analysis and comparison of atmospheric turbulence as experienced by rocket-powered models and temperature lapse-rate data obtained from rawinsonde soundings in 38 cases by using an assumed temperature lapse-rate stability boundary as a basis for comparison. A limited correlation has been obtained which indicates that atmospheric conditions classified as being unstable will generally be turbulent, but a marginal or stable classification does not necessarily indicate smooth air.

Preliminary Report on the Mineral Hill Monazite Deposits, Lemhi County, Idaho

From abstract: The Mineral Hill monazite deposits, 3 to 5 miles northeast of the town of Shoup, Lemhi County, Idaho, were investigated by the U. S. Geological Survey in July 1952. The deposits are replacement veins and lenses along shears in a pendant, principally of pre-Cambrian biotite gniess, about 4 to 5 miles in size and enclosed by granite of the Idaho batholith. The veins consist predominantly of calcite, monazite, and allanite, and contain minor quantities of barite, magnetite, rutile, and apatite.

Theoretical study of the tunnel-boundary lift interference due to slotted walls in the presence of the trailing-vortex system of a lifting model

Report presenting some equations that give the interference on the trailing-vortex system of a uniformly loaded finite-span wing in a circular tunnel containing partly open and partly closed walls, with special reference to symmetrical arrangements of the open and closed portions. Methods are given for extending the equations to include tunnel shapes other than circular.

Uranium-Bearing Sandstone in the White River Badlands, Pennington County, South Dakota (open access)

Uranium-Bearing Sandstone in the White River Badlands, Pennington County, South Dakota

From abstract: The uranium mineral uranocircite, a barium uranyl phosphate, occurs in a sandstone channel in the Chadron formation of Oligocene age in the White River Badlands, Pennington County, S. Dak. A vertical section of the basal 1-foot of the channel contains 0. 25 percent uranium. There are also small amounts of metatyuyamunite (?) in the upper part of a freshwater lime stone bed in the Chadron formation and carnotite in chalcedony veins in the overlying Brule formation, also of Oligocene age.

Separations Chemistry, Quarterly Progress Report, July-September 1953 (open access)

Separations Chemistry, Quarterly Progress Report, July-September 1953

"Continued progress has been made with the high temperature decontamination processes for irradiated uranium fuel. The fused salt treatment of molten uranium has been extended to UCl3. Plutonium and rare earths were extracted into the UCl3 phase. Direct plutonium distillation from molten irradiated uranium has been scaled up to the hundred gram scale. Solid scavenging experiments using uranium oxide, uranium carbide, and uranium nitride in contact with molten uranium have indicated fission product removal. A scaled-up investigation of the separation and recover of uranium from an SIR type ceramic fuel using the volatile fluoride process has indicated the feasibility of this separation method. The effect of irradiation on the decomposition of BrF3 has been further studies in experiments using the NAA statitron.'

Trace Characterization: Chemical and Physical

From Introduction: "This symposium focuses attention on the growing awareness of the necessity for developing and using better methods for characterizing solids. Uranium in the Black Rock District Yavapai County, Arizona (open access)

Uranium in the Black Rock District Yavapai County, Arizona

From abstract: A radioactivity survey of the Black Rock district in southern Yavapai County, Ariz, disclosed anomalous radioactivity in several localities, chiefly at the Abe Lincoln mine in sec. 11, T. 8 N., R. 3 W., about 14 road miles northeast of Wickenburg. The Abe Lincoln vein system occupies a fault zone which strikes N. 500 E. and dips from 780 to 870 NW. Moderate radioactivity is present at the Bracken property and at several other localities in the Black Rock district. The writers recommend re-opening the Abe Lincoln mine to permit a more extensive examination of the vein.
