Noncanonical Hamiltonian density formulation of hydrodynamics and ideal MHD (open access)

Noncanonical Hamiltonian density formulation of hydrodynamics and ideal MHD

A new Hamiltonian density formulation of a perfect fluid with or without a magnetic field is presented. Contrary to previous work the dynamical variables are the physical variables, rho, v, B, and s, which form a noncanonical set. A Poisson bracket which satisfies the Jacobi identity is defined. This formulation is transformed to a Hamiltonian system where the dynamical variables are the spatial Fourier coefficients of the fluid variables.

Alternative process schemes for coal conversion. Progress report No. 4, September 1, 1979-March 30, 1980 (open access)

Alternative process schemes for coal conversion. Progress report No. 4, September 1, 1979-March 30, 1980

This progress report is divided into two parts. In Part A, the results of the first three progress reports which dealt with the separation of H/sub 2//CH/sub 4/ and H/sub 2//CH/sub 4//CO mixtures resulting from coal gasification processes are briefly summarized. The separation calculations were performed for ideal, cryogenic, clathrate (gas-hydrate), and absorption/stripping separation processes. The cryogenic separation indicates the least energy requirement. Work on this phase of the program has been concluded. An experimental coal gasification program is being undertaken. In Part B, a review smmary of existing and developing coal gasificaton processes is presented. The relative merits of gasifier type, heating method, operating mode, process conditions, and gasifying medium are considered. This is followed by a qualitative appraisal of several selected coal gasification processes based upon the above considerations. It is intended that this report will help focus attention on those areas in which significant process improvements can be realized. The report concludes with a series of recommendations for future work.

Evaluation of European empirical methods for subsidence in US coal fields (open access)

Evaluation of European empirical methods for subsidence in US coal fields

The purpose of this study was to assess the applicability of European subsidence methods for the emerging US longwall practice. Subsidence prediction in Europe has typically used either graphical methods (United Kingdom) or mathematical methods. The mathematical methods utilize either profile or influence functions. The graphical methods were developed in the United Kingdom (UK) by the National Coal Board (NCB) from subsidence data obtained from numerous mines. Although a large data base in the United States (US) is not available, the methods can be tested against some recent measurements of subsidence of an essentially flat deposit mined at a depth of 189 m in the Illinois Coal Basin. While the total predicted subsidence by the NCB method is approximately correct, the profile shapes are not well matched. On the other hand, the profile functions, which are fundamentally independent of orientation with respect to mining, give quite accurate representation of the measured profiles. Of the antisymmetric forms tried, a trigonometric form was slightly preferably because it predicted strains that were conservative, i.e., always somewhat greater than the measured values. These results suggest that much of the European subsidence experience is applicable to US practice. Consistent values of the parameters were found …

Postmortem metallurgical examination of a fire-exposed spent fuel shipping cask. [After impact test] (open access)

Postmortem metallurgical examination of a fire-exposed spent fuel shipping cask. [After impact test]

A potmortem examination of a large fire-exposed rail-transported spent fuel shipping container has revealed the presence of two macrofissures in the outer cask shell. The first, a part-thru crack located within the seam weld fusion zone of the outer cask shell, was typical of hot cracks that may be found in stainless steel weldments. The second, located within the stainless steel base metal, apparently originated at microcracks formed during the welding of a copper-stainless steel dissimilar metal joint. The latter microcrack then propagated during the fire-test, ultimately penetrating the outer shall of the cask. 18 figures, 2 tables.

Carbon Dioxide Effects Research and Assessment Program. Carbon Dioxide Research Progress Report, fiscal year 1979 (open access)

Carbon Dioxide Effects Research and Assessment Program. Carbon Dioxide Research Progress Report, fiscal year 1979

Research on the global carbon cycle and the effects of increased carbon dioxide on the global climate system is reported. Environmental and societal effects related to CO/sub 2/ and environmental control technology for CO/sub 2/ are also discussed. Lists of research projects and reports and publications of the Carbon Dioxide and Climate Research Program are included. An expanded CO/sub 2/ monitoring network is providing increased coverage for interpretation of patterns of sources and sinks seasonal variability, and documentation of the global growth of CO/sub 2/. Modeling studies emphasized that knowledge of the transport and mixing of surface ocean waters is important in understanding deep oceanic circulation. Initial studies in the equatorial Pacific are helping quantify estimates of the amount of outgassing CO/sub 2/ from tropical waters. During fiscal year 1979, there was a substantial increase in appreciation of the role of the ocean in controlling not only atmospheric CO/sub 2/ concentrations but also the climatic response to changes in concentration. Model simulations of the effect of doubled CO/sub 2/ concentration carried out with fixed ocean temperatures a situation that is possible during perhaps the next 20 years, showed relatively small summer heating over land areas. On the other hand, simulations …

Cross-hole investigation of a rock mass subjected to heating (open access)

Cross-hole investigation of a rock mass subjected to heating

A cross-hole high-frequency acoustic investigation of a granitic rock mass subjected to sustained heating is reported. Compressional and shear-wave velocity measurements along four different paths between four vertical boreholes made prior to turning on the heater, during 398 days of heating and after the heater was turned off correlated well with the presence of fracture zones, in which the fractures were closed by thermal expansion of the rock upon heating. When the rock mass cooled, the velocity measurements indicated a greater intensity of fracturing than had existed prior to heating. Laboratory compressional and shear-wave velocity measurements have been made on intact rock specimens obtained from the site and subjected to axial stress. When used to interpret the increases in velocities measured in the field upon heating the rock mass, increases in horizontal normal stresses to between 30 and 40 MPa were inferred. Increases of these magnitudes agree with stress measurements made by the other techniques. The ratio of measured compressional to shear-wave velocity appears to provide a sensitive measure of the fraction of crack porosity containing water or gas.
