Uranium-Bearing Sandstone in the White River Badlands, Pennington County, South Dakota

From abstract: The uranium mineral uranocircite, a barium uranyl phosphate, occurs in a sandstone channel in the Chadron formation of Oligocene age in the White River Badlands, Pennington County, S. Dak. A vertical section of the basal 1-foot of the channel contains 0. 25 percent uranium. There are also small amounts of metatyuyamunite (?) in the upper part of a freshwater lime stone bed in the Chadron formation and carnotite in chalcedony veins in the overlying Brule formation, also of Oligocene age.

"Continued progress has been made with the high temperature decontamination processes for irradiated uranium fuel. The fused salt treatment of molten uranium has been extended to UCl3. Plutonium and rare earths were extracted into the UCl3 phase. Direct plutonium distillation from molten irradiated uranium has been scaled up to the hundred gram scale. Solid scavenging experiments using uranium oxide, uranium carbide, and uranium nitride in contact with molten uranium have indicated fission product removal. A scaled-up investigation of the separation and recover of uranium from an SIR type ceramic fuel using the volatile fluoride process has indicated the feasibility of this separation method. The effect of irradiation on the decomposition of BrF3 has been further studies in experiments using the NAA statitron.'

Uranium in the Black Rock District Yavapai County, Arizona

From abstract: A radioactivity survey of the Black Rock district in southern Yavapai County, Ariz, disclosed anomalous radioactivity in several localities, chiefly at the Abe Lincoln mine in sec. 11, T. 8 N., R. 3 W., about 14 road miles northeast of Wickenburg. The Abe Lincoln vein system occupies a fault zone which strikes N. 500 E. and dips from 780 to 870 NW. Moderate radioactivity is present at the Bracken property and at several other localities in the Black Rock district. The writers recommend re-opening the Abe Lincoln mine to permit a more extensive examination of the vein.

The investigation used rocket-propelled models in free flight over a range of Mach numbers. The results indicate that the airplane is subject to aeroelastic losses varying from about 7 percent at Mach number 0.5 to 46 percent at Mach number 0.90 at sea level.

Memorandum presenting a two-dimensional wind-tunnel investigation of the effects of maximum-thickness location on fluctuating pressures and normal-force coefficients on 9-percent-thick airfoils, which indicated that for normal-force coefficients up to 0.6, the section variables had little effect on the pressure pulsations and root-mean-square normal-force-coefficient fluctuations. Results regarding pressure fluctuations and normal-force-coefficient fluctuations are provided.
