Electronic Specific Heat of Sodium Tungsten Bronze (open access)

Electronic Specific Heat of Sodium Tungsten Bronze

The design and operation of a calorimeter for use in the temperature range 1.8 to 4.2 deg K are presented, and the methods used in the treatment of data and calculation of results are discussed. The heat capacities of several Na- W bronzes (Na/sub x/WO/sub 3/) were determined in the temperature interval 1.8 to 4.2 deg K. Samples having x equal to 0.89, heat capacities are described adequately by the sum of two terms, one linear and one cubic in temperature. The electronic specific heat of each sample is obtained by evaluating the coefficient of the linear term, and the Rebye eharacteristic temperature derived from the coefficient of the cubic term. Rensities of one-electron energy levels at the Fermi energy, and effective electronic masses are calculated from the electronic specific heats. A plot of the density of states as a function of energy can be made if it is assumed that this curve is independent of Na concentration. The justification of this assumption is discussed in the light of current theories of the solid state. The density of states curve rises rapidly at higher energies, and this rise is interpreted in terms of the filling of a Brillouin zone or …

Production tests 300 series: A Bibliography

This bibliography is a compilation of reports on production tests performed in the 300 Area from May 1944 to February 1957. It includes all tests covering engineering and physics experiments in the Hanford Test Reactor development; fabrication and subsequent irradiation of fuel elements and melt plant (slug fabrication) procedures. Subject, author and report number indexes are included. Addendum 1 gives the reactor production test number under which the fuel elements were irradiated.

Separations Chemistry Quarterly Progress Report for October-December 1953 (open access)

Separations Chemistry Quarterly Progress Report for October-December 1953

Work has continued on high temperature methods for processing irradiated U fuel. Additional results have been obtained with fused halide treatment, solid scavengers, and direct Pu distillation. With fused fluorides about 95% of the Pu was removed from a U sample, whiletreatment of U with HCl gas removed almost all the Pu and many fission products. Treatment of molten U with UO/sub 2/ removed a substantial fraction of the fission products without removing Fu. Uranium carbide treatment results were similar to the oxide but not as effective. A small scale distillation of Pu from U showed that Raoult's law is obeyed. (auth)

SCRAP RECOVERY AT VITRO MANUFACTURING COMPANY CANONSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA

A process is presented for recovering U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ from scrap residues varying in content from 2 to 85% U/sub 2/O/sub 8/ to yield a high-purity (99% U/sub 3/O/sub 8/) black oxide. (W.L.H.)

The acute radiation syndrome: A study of ten cases and a review of the problem (open access)

The acute radiation syndrome: A study of ten cases and a review of the problem

In this report ten cases of acute radiation syndrome are described resulting from two accidents occurring at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory of unique nature involving fissionable material. These cases are described in considerable detail. The report comprises ten sections. This volume, part II of the report, is comprised of sections entitled: (1) the Biological Basis for the Clinical Response seen in the Acute radiation Syndrome, (2) Clinical Signs and Symptoms, (3) Discussion of Hematological Findings, (4) Chemistry of the Blood and Urine, (5) Discussion of Pathological Findings, and (6) Reconsiderations of the Calculated Radiation Doses in Terms of the Observed Biological Response of the Patients. This report was prepared primarily for the clinician who is interested in radiation injuries and therefore emphasis has been placed on the correlation of clinical and pathological changes with the type of cytogenetic change known to be produced by ionizing radiation.

A DIFFUSION CLOUD CHAMBER STUDY OF VERY SLOW MESONS. II. BETA DECAY OF THE MUON (open access)

A DIFFUSION CLOUD CHAMBER STUDY OF VERY SLOW MESONS. II. BETA DECAY OF THE MUON

The spectrum of electrons arising from the decay of the negative mu meson has been determined. The muons are arrested in the gas of a high pressure hydrogen filled diffusion cloud chamber. The momenta of the decay electrons are determined from their curvature in a magnetic field of 7750 gauss. The spectrum of 415 electrons has been analyzed according to the theory of Michel. The shape parameter, {rho}, is found to be 0.64 {plus_minus} .10. The significance of this result in terms of the beta interaction is discussed.

Hazards and Safety Measures Related to Nuclear-Powered Merchant Ships: An Annotated Bibliography of Declassified Literature (open access)

Hazards and Safety Measures Related to Nuclear-Powered Merchant Ships: An Annotated Bibliography of Declassified Literature

This compilation contains 202 abstracts of reports and documents on subjects related to maritime reactor safety; the abstracts are indexed in thc AEC Abstracts of Classified Reports'' (ACR). These ACR references were listed as unclassified or declassified in TID-4021, TID-40.35, and TID-4035, Supplement 1. The abstracts were selected as a part of the preparation of the classified bibliography (ALI-50, printed August 30, 1958) on this same subject. (See also SO-6200, Septcmber 15, 1957, unclassified.) The abstracts are grouped according to the category of information they present; within each category, the most recent abstracts are given first. Subject, author, and report number indices are provided. A report number code key is not included. The report numbers used by the AEC Technical Information Service can be found in TID-85 (1st Rev.). The abstracts are those indexed through ACR Vol. 13 (1957). Because of the lag in abstracting, reports issued in late 1957 are not likely to be included. (auth)
