THE HEAT TREATMENT OF PLUTONIUM (open access)

THE HEAT TREATMENT OF PLUTONIUM

Two groups of plutonium bars, one group containing 165 ppm iron and the other 678 ppm iron were end-quenched from the beta, gamma, delta, delta-prime, and epsilon phases. In general, cooling rate was found to have three striking effects on microstructure. The alpha grain size was found to decrease with increasing cooling rate during cooling from all phases. Upon cooling high-iron plutonium from the epsilon phase, the size of the Pu--Pu6/sub 6/Fe eutectic network decreased with increasing cooling rate. Cooling high-iron plutonium from temperatures between 413 and 460 deg C produced a wide variety of Pu --Pu/sub 6/ Fe configurations in the microstructure. Finally, the size of an unidentified spheroidal inclusion, soluble in the delta and higher temperature phases, decreased as cooling rate increased across the delta to gamma transformation. These effects of cooling rate can be used to indicate the cooling rate or thermal history that a particular plutonium specimen has encountered. A linear relationship between the alpha grain size and the Pu--Pu/sub 6/Fe eutectic network size was observed. The network size was roughly two times larger than the alpha grain size. Hardness traverses on each of the bars indlcated no apparent effect of coollng rate during quenchlng on …

Scattering of 14-Mev Neutrons From Nitrogen and Oxygen (open access)

Scattering of 14-Mev Neutrons From Nitrogen and Oxygen

The differential cross sections for elastic scattering of 14-Mev neutrons from nitrogen and oxygen were measured in the angular range from 17 to 140 deg , using liquid targets and annular ring geometry. Inelastic scattering to the 2.31 and 3.95-Mev levels in N/sup 14/ and to the levels near 6 and 7 Mev in O/sup 16/ was investigated over a more restricted angular range. The 2.31-Mev level in N/sup 14/ was not excited appreciably, in disagreement with previously reported results. For both elements, the elastic scattering cross sections (determined to an accuracy of 10%) were found to be appreciably higher than the optical model predictions by Rjorklund and Fernbach for scatterirg angles larger than 70 deg . The inelastic cross sections measured are, within experimental accuracy, the same as the corresponding (p,p') cross sections. (auth)

Radiochemical analyses of water samples collected postshot in the vicinity of Tatum Dome, Mississippi. Technical letter: Dribble 42 (open access)

Radiochemical analyses of water samples collected postshot in the vicinity of Tatum Dome, Mississippi. Technical letter: Dribble 42

On the basis of the analytical methods used, preliminary radiochemical analysis of the water samples collected after the Salmon event indicate that no detectable level of radioactive contamination exists. Samples were obtained from the calcite caprock at a depth of 934 to 1,006 feet and through intervening aquifers to aquifer 1 at a depth of 365 to 421 feet from the surface. The water sample collected from the calcite caprock was taken within approximately 1,700 feet of the detonation. Periodic sampling of the wells will continue and more refined analytical techniques will be used in analyzing the samples. After the hydrologic test wells have been better developed by bailing, additional isotopes will be investigated.

Ernest Orlando Lawrence (open access)

Ernest Orlando Lawrence

In his relatively short life of 57 years, Ernest Orlando Lawrence accomplished more than one might believe possible in a life twice as long. The important ingredients of his success were native ingenuity and basic good judgement in science, great stamina, an enthusiastic and outgoing personality, and a sense of integrity that was overwhelming. Many articles on the life and accomplishments of Ernest Lawrence have been published, and George Herbert Childs has written a book-length biography. This biographical memoir, however, has not made use of any sources other than the author's memory of Ernest Lawrence and of things learned from him. A more balanced picture will emerge when Herbert Childs biography is published; this sketch simply shows how Ernest Lawrence looked to one of his many friends.

A Fluid-Bed Process for the Direct Conversion of Uranium Hexafluoride to Uranium Dioxide (open access)

A Fluid-Bed Process for the Direct Conversion of Uranium Hexafluoride to Uranium Dioxide

A new, dry process for the production of UO/sub 2/ powder from UF/sub 6/ by fluidization and particle-coating techniques was developed. The process involves direct conversion of UF/sub 6/ to a solid, UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/, by hydrolysis with steam and the reduction of the UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/ to the dioxide by reaction with was carried out in 3-in.-dia. Monel reactors. In continuing studies, dense, spheroidal UO/sub 2/ particles in the range --20 +200 mesh are being prepared. A simultaneous (steam and H/sub 2/) reaction procedure at temperatures up to 7OO deg C is being used. Particle densities ranged to 9.75g/ cc or about 89% of theoretical. Sintering in H/sub 2/ at about 1700 deg C for 2.5 hr gave final densities of 10.4 to 16.6 g/cc or up to about 96.5% of theoretical density. (auth)

Geologic section and hydrologic observations at station 1A, Tatum salt dome, Lamar County, Mississippi (open access)

Geologic section and hydrologic observations at station 1A, Tatum salt dome, Lamar County, Mississippi

Station 1A was the emplacement hole for the nuclear device used in the Advanced Research Project Agency's and U.S. Atomic Energy Commission's 5-kT nuclear Salmon Event of October 22, 1964. The hole penetrated the Pascagoula and Hattiesburg Formations, undifferentiated, and the Catahoula Sandstone, all of Miocene age, before entering the caprock at a depth of 882 feet. In continued through the calcite, gypsum, and anhydrite units of the caprock, which extend to a depth of 1,469.5 feet, and terminated in the salt stock at a depth of 2,802 feet. Five sand aquifer units lie above the caprock, whereas one sand aquifier lies within the calcite unit of the caprock. Drilling activities did not cause noticeable water-level fluctuations in the sand aquifers; however, during drilling in the calcite caprock, drilling fluid losses twice caused significant but temporary rises in water level in three observation wells that monitor the calcite limestone aquifer. The microscopic examination of drill cuttings collected at 10-foot intervals to a depth of 1,220 feet in Station 1A is presented. 2 figures, 1 table.
