Examining the Role of Emotion Dysregulation and Rumination in the Relationship between PTSD Symptom Severity and Sleep Disturbances

Emotion dysregulation and rumination are involved in the development, maintenance, and treatment of both posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sleep disturbances. We examined if and how these factors influenced the nature of the relationship between PTSD symptom severity and subjective sleep disturbances among trauma-exposed individuals. Using data gathered from a community sample of 199 trauma-exposed individuals (Mean age = 35.48; 59.80% female), we examined whether there were stronger significant associations between greater PTSD symptom severity and poorer sleep quality/lower sleep quantity at higher (vs. lower) levels of (1) negative emotion dysregulation and positive emotion dysregulation (both included in the same model) and (2) rumination. Participants recruited via Amazon's Mechanical Turk completed the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5, Brief Version of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale – Positive, Ruminative Thought Style Questionnaire, and sleep quality/quantity items from the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Results of simple and additive multiple moderation analyses showed that neither negative/positive emotion dysregulation nor rumination moderated the relationships between PTSD symptom severity and sleep quality/quantity. The Relationship between Self-Regulated Learning Strategies and Licensing Exam Readiness among Doctor of Chiropractic Students

Graduating competent healthcare providers to meet increasing demands of the United States leads to interest in graduate health science student success. In this study, I explored the relationship between self-regulated learning strategies and licensing exam readiness among Doctor of Chiropractic students. Two research questions asked (1) how self-regulated learning strategies vary by gender and year of study, and (2) how self-regulated learning strategies relate to licensing exam readiness. One hundred thirty-three students from five chiropractic institutions were surveyed with questions from the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) and exam readiness items. A series of t-tests, one-way analyses of variance, Kruskal-Wallis H tests, and ordinary least squares (OLS) regression addressed the research questions. Results indicated (1) self-regulated learning strategies do vary by gender and year of study, and (2) self-regulation is related to licensing exam readiness, particularly in Parts I and II of the exam. Chiropractic institutions and policymakers should focus efforts on introducing and reinforcing self-regulated learning strategies throughout the curriculum and explore licensing exam implications. Future research should continue expanding the literature on chiropractic education by considering actual licensing exam performance and determining appropriateness of the MSLQ for chiropractic students.

Bicultural Identity Integration and Psychological Wellness among Adult Children of Immigrants: Role of Cognitive Flexibility, Affect Regulation, and Adaptive Coping

Guided by the framework of bicultural identity integration (BII), a conceptual model depicting the direct and indirect effects of BII, cognitive flexibility, affect regulation, and coping on psychological wellbeing indicators (i.e., life satisfaction, depression) of adult children of immigrants (ACI) in the U.S. was developed. It was hypothesized that greater BII would contribute to greater cognitive flexibility and affect regulation, which would be associated with more utilization of adaptive coping strategies and greater psychological wellbeing. A total of 240 young ACI from across the U.S. completed the online research questionnaire that measured all variables of interest. Results from structural equation modeling analyses showed adequate model fit with the data. Findings provided support to the indirect effects of BII factors on wellbeing through affect regulation, however, the indirect effect paths are more complicated than what were hypothesized originally. Specifically, higher levels of identity harmony and identity blendedness contributed to more difficulties in emotion regulation, and subsequently, poorer wellbeing. Additionally, both cultural identity harmony and identity blendedness contributed to greater levels of cultural and relational maintenance strategies (i.e., avoidance, forbearance) in the context of intergenerational conflict through affect regulation, but not through cognitive flexibility. Understanding and Reasoning with Negation

In this dissertation, I start with an analysis of negation in eleven benchmark corpora covering six Natural Language Understanding (NLU) tasks. With a thorough investigation, I first show that (a) these benchmarks contain fewer negations compared to general-purpose English and (b) the few negations they contain are often unimportant. Further, my empirical studies demonstrate that state-of-the-art transformers trained using these corpora obtain substantially worse results with the instances that contain negation, especially if the negations are important. Second, I investigate whether translating negation is also an issue for modern machine translation (MT) systems. My studies find that indeed the presence of negation can significantly impact translation quality, in some cases resulting in reductions of over 60%. In light of these findings, I investigate strategies to better understand the semantics of negation. I start with identifying the focus of negation. I develop a neural model that takes into account the scope of negation, context from neighboring sentences, or both. My best proposed system obtains an accuracy improvement of 7.4% over prior work. Social Networking Sites Usage Behavior: Trust and Risk Perceptions

This dissertation addresses research questions related to defining user's trust and risk perceptions associated with social networking usage behavior in relation to the repeated privacy and security breaches. The general research question is explored in the dissertation via the conduct of three related studies. The finding from these three investigations are presented in the results section as 3 essays that collectively examine the social networking sites usage behavior. Essay 1 proposes a conceptual model based on the review of multiple breaches. The review provides a conceptual model which is further analyzed using a quantitative survey in the second essay. Essay 2 measures the trust and risk perceptions associated with different sources of information when presented with multiple breaches. This portion of the research used a quantitative method that included surveying of college students from University of North Texas (UNT) to understand the relation between user's trust and risk perceptions. Essay 3 examines the social networking usage behavior on account of repeated privacy and security breaches. Politics in Uniforms: Military Influence in Politics and Conflictual State Behavior

This dissertation examines how the state-building process relates to civil-military relations and how political influence of the military affects state's conflict behavior. By doing so, this study aims to introduce a nuanced consideration of the well-known civil-military problematique, which might be summarized as the threat the military can constitute to the polity that it is created to protect. I treat this paradox by addressing the following research questions: Why do some militaries have a qualitatively higher level of influence in politics than others? Second, how does the military's influence in politics affect a state's domestic conflict behavior? And third, how does it affect state's international conflict behavior? I develop a theory that when the military is heavily involved in the state-building process, it gains an unusual place within politics, gets itself imprinted in the DNA of the state, and gains undue political power. I name such militaries as state-builder militaries and argue that such states experience qualitatively different civil-military relations, in which the military acts as an extremely Praetorian institution. Cross Validation of the Juror Questionnaire of Values and Viewpoints: Sentencing Decisions and Impression Management in Eligible Capital Jurors

The current dissertation had three primary objectives, categorized into two MTurk studies with capital juror-eligible community members: (a) cross-validate the psychometric properties of the JQVV, (b): explore the role of legal attitudes via the JQVV in mock capital sentencing decisions, and (c): examine the JQVV's ability to detect juror social desirability in capital voir dire. Impressively, Study 1 (N = 552) and Study 2 (N = 313) provided strong and consistent evidence for the JQVV's reliability and construct validity. In the mock juror paradigm, punitive legal attitudes on the JQVV (i.e., Crime-Neg, Convict, and Death-Pos), did not directly affect sentencing decisions, however they indirectly influenced the perception of nearly all other legally relevant variables (e.g., evidence type). For example, participants with more punitive criminal justice attitudes evaluated aggravating evidence more favorably which, in turn, increased death sentence verdicts. Study 1 also underscored the concerningly low levels of comprehension jurors have regarding judicial instructions and other relevant legal knowledge (e.g., the definition of aggravating). In Study 2, the support-life and support-death groups evidenced divergent patterns of social desirability, although support-death participants did not dramatically alter their scores between the genuine and social desirability condition. Three Essays on Phishing Attacks, Individual Susceptibility, and Detection Accuracy

Phishing is a social engineering attack to deceive and persuade people to divulge private information like usernames and passwords, account details (including bank account details), and social security numbers. Phishers typically utilize e-mail, chat, text messages, or social media. Despite the presence of automatic anti-phishing filters, phishing messages reach online users' inboxes. Understanding the influence of phishing techniques and individual differences on susceptibility and detection accuracy is an important step toward creating comprehensive behavioral and organizational anti-phishing awareness programs. This dissertation seeks to achieve a dual purpose in a series of three essays. Essay 1 seeks to explore the nature of phishing threats that including identifying attack intentions, and psychological and design techniques of phishing attacks. Essay 2 seeks to understand the relative influence of attack techniques and individual phishing experiential traits on people's phishing susceptibility. Essay 3 seeks to understand an individual's cognitive and affective differences that differentiate between an individual's phishing detection accuracy.

Understanding and Addressing Accessibility Barriers Faced by People with Visual Impairments on Block-Based Programming Environments

There is an increased use of block-based programming environments in K-12 education and computing outreach activities to introduce novices to programming and computational thinking skills. However, despite their appealing design that allows students to focus on concepts rather than syntax, block-based programming by design is inaccessible to people with visual impairments and people who cannot use the mouse. In addition to this inaccessibility, little is known about the instructional experiences of students with visual impairments on current block-based programming environments. This dissertation addresses this gap by (1) investigating the challenges that students with visual impairments face on current block-based programming environments and (2) exploring ways in which we can use the keyboard and the screen reader to create block-based code. Through formal survey and interview studies with teachers of students with visual impairments and students with visual impairments, we identify several challenges faced by students with visual impairments on block-based programming environments. Using the knowledge of these challenges and building on prior work, we explore how to leverage the keyboard and the screen reader to improve the accessibility of block-based programming environments through a prototype of an accessible block-based programming library. Posthuman Art Conservation Curriculum (open access)

Posthuman Art Conservation Curriculum

At least half of the art objects in the public trust are currently in need of conservation today. In consideration of this crisis, a posthuman version of art conservation curriculum is proposed to transgress current limitations of the field. Through applying Michel Foucault's genealogy and archaeology to art conservation and its education, Anthropocentric motivations undergirding conservation are revealed. Foucault's death meditation inspires my narrativization of a fire event that incites a re-visioning of my over 25 years of conservation and teaching experience. By re-contextualizing theorist Ted Aoki's works, art conservation curriculum becomes a reflective and affective site for reciprocal healing of self and other, incorporating the lives of conservation students and art objects. Reconsidering art conservation curriculum in light of Aokian notions of curriculum as plan and curriculum as lived, provokes the curricular potentialities of new materialism, along with quantum physics' entanglement, intra-agency and intra-activity for the field. Art conservation and its curriculum are radically reimagined as indwelling between humanist priorities of the Anthropocene and posthumanist possibilities towards more caring, ethical and sustainable futures for both human and nonhumans' coexistence on this planet.

Considerations in Designing Alloys for Laser-Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing

This work identifies alloy terminal freezing range, columnar growth, grain coarsening, liquid availability towards the terminal stage of solidification, and segregation towards boundaries as primary factors affecting the hot-cracking susceptibility of fusion-based additive manufacturing (F-BAM) processed alloys. Additionally, an integrated computational materials engineering (ICME)-based approach has been formulated to design novel Al alloys, and high entropy alloys for F-BAM processing. The ICME-based approach has led to heterogeneous nucleation-induced grain refinement, terminal eutectic solidification-enabled liquid availability, and segregation-induced coalescence of solidification boundaries during laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF) processing. In addition to exhibiting a wide crack-free L-PBF processing window, the designed alloys exhibited microstructural heterogeneity and hierarchy (MHH), and thus could leverage the unique process dynamics of L-PBF to produce a fine-tunable MHH and mechanical behavior. Furthermore, alloy chemistry-based fine tuning of the stacking fault energy has led to transformative damage tolerant alloys. Such alloys can shield defects stemming from the stochastic powder bed in L-PBF, and consequently can prevent catastrophic failure despite the solidification defects. A modified materials systems approach that explicitly includes alloy chemistry as a means to modify the printability, properties and performance with F-BAM is also presented. Identification and Characterization of Two Putative Sulfate Transporters Essential for Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation in Medicago truncatula

The process of symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF) in legume root nodules requires the channeling and exchange of nutrients within and between the host plant cells and between the plant cells and their resident rhizobia. Using a forward genetics approach in the Medicago truncatula Tnt1 mutant population followed by whole genome sequencing, two putative sulfate transporter genes, MtSULTR3;5 and MtSULTR3;4b, were identified. To support the hypothesis that the defective putative sulfate transporter genes were the causative mutation for the mutants' phenotypes, the M. truncatula Tnt1 population was successfully reverse screened to find other mutant alleles of the genes. The F2 progeny of mutants backcrossed with wildtype R108 demonstrated co-segregation of mutant phenotypes with the mutant alleles confirming that the mutated mtsultr3;5 and mtsultr3;4b genes were the cause of defective SNF in the mutant lines mutated in the respective genes. This finding was further established for mtsultr3;4b by successful functional complementation of a mutant line defective in the gene with the wildtype copy of MtSULTR3;4b. A MtSULTR3;4b promoter-GUS expression experiment indicated MtSULTR3;4b expression in the vasculature and infected and uninfected plant cells of root nodules. Bilingual Educators' Practices for Supporting Hispanic Bilingual Students' Success in School

This narrative inquiry study sought the voices of bilingual teachers through their lived experiences in relation to the success of Hispanic emergent bilinguals in schools. Two research questions guided the study: (1) What practices do bilingual educators consider important in helping Hispanic emergent bilingual students succeed in schools? and (2) How do bilingual teachers negotiate the curriculum and school structures to support Hispanic bilingual students' success in their classrooms? Two theoretical frameworks were used. Constructivism provided the structure for honoring the lived experiences of these teachers and culturally relevant pedagogy provided the lenses of culture, funds of knowledge, and deep sociolinguistic awareness. The use of narrative inquiry as a methodology affirmed the bilingual teachers' voices as important and authoritative sources of knowledge. Semi-structured interviews and classroom observations allowed the participants to engage as storytellers about their history and experiences that contributed to answering the questions. Three resonant reverberations emerged from the analysis: (a) the emerging rhythms of the classroom; (b) the realms of instructional and learning design; and (c) the orientation towards a culturally relevant pedagogy. A Comprehensive Remedial and Enhancing Cello Method for Professors and Undergraduate Students: Conformation-Based Theoretical Methodology and Sequential Practical Solutions

Undergraduate cellists from diverse pedagogical backgrounds with various levels of technical proficiency often struggle to adapt to the demanding performance standards of the university environment. Frequently, these challenges are caused by technical concepts that have been incorrectly learned or unaddressed in the cellist's previous educational experience. Designed for university cello professors and undergraduate cello students, this study is a remedial and enhancement technical method for developing efficient performance habits; it presents a synthesis of cello performing ideologies, comprehensive technical analysis, physical conformation solutions, original sequential exercises, practice models, and recommendations for supporting literature. The method provides a structured path to expressive mastery and artistic freedom in performing advanced cello repertoire.
