The Edition of a Quartet for Solo Double Bass, Violin, Viola, and Violoncello by Franz Anton Hoffmeister, a Lecture Recital, Together with Selected Works by J.S. Bach, N. Paganini, S. Koussevitsky, F. Skorzeny, L. Walzel and Others

A solo-quartet by Hoffmeister previously unpublished was discovered by the author in the archives of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna. This work contributes to the modern solo repertoire for double bass, and has considerable musical merit. It is a well written work using cleverly overlapped phrases, counterpoint and imitative writing, and effective juxtaposition of contrasting instrumentation. It lies well on the bass and provides an excellent solo vehicle for advanced bassists.

The Effects of EDTA Chelation Therapy on Plaque Calcium and Mineral Metabolism in Atherosclerotic Rabbits (open access)

The Effects of EDTA Chelation Therapy on Plaque Calcium and Mineral Metabolism in Atherosclerotic Rabbits

New Zealand albino rabbits exhibited calcified aortic plaques and maximum average serum cholesterol levels of 1200 mg percent after twenty-three weeks on an atherogenic diet (250 to 500 mg percent cholesterol in ten percent corn oil; 200,00 I.U. vitamin D3 per month). One month following termination of the atherogenic diet, rabbits were treated with disodium edetate (Na2EDTA, 50 mg/kg body weight) via the marginal ear vein, on alternating days for a total of twenty infusions each. Aortae were examined for tissue calcium both quantitatively (direct microcomplexometric analysis) and histologically six weeks after completion of EDTA chelation therapy.

Morton Schamberg's Role in Precisionism

This study examines how Morton Schamberg encapsulated a significant understanding or European Modernism and created its translation into a unique American style of art known as Precisionism. After his formal studies in architecture and painting and his trips to Europe, he did reworkings of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism before creating important modernist works.

Three Perspectives of the art of Ferruccio Busoni as Exemplified by the Toccata, Carmen Fantasy, and Transcription of Liszt's Mephisto Waltz:a Lecture Recital, Together with Three Other Recitals (open access)

Three Perspectives of the art of Ferruccio Busoni as Exemplified by the Toccata, Carmen Fantasy, and Transcription of Liszt's Mephisto Waltz:a Lecture Recital, Together with Three Other Recitals

The lecture recital, given April 13, 1981, began with biographical background for Busoni's compositional development leading to his mature style, as found in the Toccata, the Carmen Fantasy, and the Mephisto Waltz. The three works--an original composition, an operatic paraphrase, and a transcription from an orchestral score--were then detailed with emphasis placed primarily on Busoni's aesthetic ideals in relation to the three works.

A Proposed Molecular Mechanism for the Activation of a Calcium/Phospholipid-Dependent Protein Kinase in P1798 Lymphosarcoma

Calcium/phospholipid-dependent protein kinase (PKC) was purified from P1798 lymphosarcoma. It was demonstrated that uncomplexed calcium and uncomplexed phosphatidylserine are the activators, that the activation of PKC requires that calcium bind first, that the activation of PKC requires that calcium bind first, that high calcium concentrations inhibit PKC activation, and that calcium inhibition can be overcome by phosphatidylserine.

A Factor Analysis of Twelve Selected Isotonic Muscular Endurance Exercises on the Universal Gym

This study investigated the assessment of muscular endurance using the Universal Gym. Subjects included 19 women and 151 men (18-30 years). Measures of muscular endurance were evaluated at various percentages of 1 RM on twelve exercise stations and it appears that a percentage of 1 RM ranging from .7 for the arms, .5 to .9 for the legs, and ,5 to .8 for the trunk is required to produce fatigue state in the necessary repetition range.

A study of muscular development and muscular strength in the highly trained female bodybuilder and the non-strength trained female (open access)

A study of muscular development and muscular strength in the highly trained female bodybuilder and the non-strength trained female

The extent of muscular strength and muscular size in 20 female bodybuilders and 20 non-strength trained females was studied. Body composition and segment volumes and related anthropometric measurements data were obtained along with chest press and knee extension One Repetition Maximum (IRM) and 25 Repitition Maximum (25RM) values. No group differences were present in age, height, weight and segment volumes. The bodybuilders had a lower percent body fat, greater lean body weight (LBW) and larger muscles compared to the non-strength trained females.

D. O. ("Prof") Wiley: his Contributions to Music Education (1921 to 1963)

The purpose of the study was to write a history of the professional career of D. O. Wiley as a music educator from 1921 to 1963. To give focus to the career of Wiley, answers were sought to three questions, stated as sub-problems: (1) What were the important events and influences in the professional career of D. O. Wiley as a college/University band director? (2) What impact did Wiley have on the development of Texas public school bands that earned him the title "Father of Texas Bands?" and (3) What role did Wiley play in the development of the Texas Music Educators Association and other professional music organizations.

Ultrastructural Effects of Chemical Modification on Olfactory Receptors

The ultrastructural effects of chemical modification on olfactory receptors were investigated with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and fluorescent microscopy. Mason and Morton (1984) hypothesized that a two-step chemical treatment would covalently modify receptor proteins. Their two-step protocol was modified in an attempt to label olfactory receptor proteins and the ultra structural effects of the original two-step protocol were examined.

Dress Style, Counselor and Client Gender and Expectations About Counseling (open access)

Dress Style, Counselor and Client Gender and Expectations About Counseling

This study explored the effects of counselor dress style and counselor and subject gender on clients' expectations about counseling. Two hundred fifty undergraduate students were given Tinsley's Expectations About Counseling questionnaire. Dress style was shown to have no effect on the expectations measured. Significant main effects were found for client gender, counselor gender and their two way interaction on the measures of responsibility, acceptance, confrontation, empathy, genuineness, tolerance, trustworthiness, concreteness, and immediacy. Post hoc analysis revealed that both male and female participants had higher expectations of female counselors than male counselors. Participants of both genders also expected female counselors to be more confrontive, genuine, trustworthy, concrete, and accepting than male counselors. They also had a higher expectation that counseling would address their immediate concerns.

Modulation of P1798 Lymposarcoma Proliferation by Protein Phosphorylation

The role of protein kinases in modulating cell proliferation was examined. Studies characterized the regulation of cell proliferation by adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate-dependent protein kinase (cA-PK). Calcium/calmodulin-dependent myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) was isolated and examined as a potential substrate regulated by cA-PK in the rapidly proliferating.

Evaluation of Immobilized Boronates for Studies of Adenine Nucleotide Metabolism

Immobilized boronates were evaluated for studies of adenine nucleotide metabolism. These studies were performed using Affi-gel 601, a commercial boronate gel, and dihydroxyboryl Sepharose and dihydroxyboryl-Bio Rex which were synthesized in the laboratory. The studies performed included the determination of the relative binding affinity of a variety of adenine containing compounds for the three immobilized boronates under differing chromatographic conditions.
