Selective Recovery of Enriched Uranium from Inorganic Wastes

Uranium as U(IV) and U(VI) can be selectively recovered from liquids and sludge containing metal precipitates, inorganic salts, sand and silt fines, debris, other contaminants, and slimes, which are very difficult to de-water. Chemical processes such as fuel manufacturing and uranium mining generate enriched and natural uranium-bearing wastes. This patented Framatome ANP (FANP) uranium recovery process reduces uranium losses, significantly offsets waste disposal costs, produces a solid waste that meets mixed-waste disposal requirements, and does not generate metal-contaminated liquids. At the head end of the process is a floating dredge that retrieves liquids, sludge, and slimes in the form of a slurry directly from the floor of a lined surface impoundment (lagoon). The slurry is transferred to and mixed in a feed tank with a turbine mixer and re-circulated to further break down the particles and enhance dissolution of uranium. This process uses direct steam injection and sodium hypochlorite addition to oxidize and dissolves any U(IV). Cellulose is added as a non-reactive filter aid to help filter slimes by giving body to the slurry. The slurry is pumped into a large recessed-chamber filter press then de-watered by a pressure cycle-controlled double-diaphragm pump. U(VI) captured in the filtrate from this process …

Lead-Zinc Mining--Evaluation of Plantings

Photograph of the area around the Eagle-Pichers Mine, Picher, Oklahoma. Slimes Pond Evaluation of plantings in Commerce, Oklahoma. Grass seedlings were mulched with prairie hay that was hand spread following planting at the rate of 3 tons per acre and anchored with a tandem disc from March 15 - 17, 1967. This shows an adequate mulch cover, but demonstrates by the amount of loose hay on the surface that the tandem disc did not properly anchor this mulch. OK-2767-4.

Lead-Zinc Mining--Evaluation of Plantings

Photograph of the area around the Eagle-Pichers Mine, Picher, Oklahoma. Slimes Pond Evaluation of plantings in Commerce, Oklahoma. View facing northwest corner of planting area (Field no. 1). On March 17, 1967, 30 rows of grass and legume species were planted east-west. Note flagmarkers. Also in the background is a broadcast grass mixture plot. Prarie hay mulch at the rate of 3 tons per acre was hand spread over the whole area immediately after planting and anchored with a tandem disc. seedbed was compacted with the rubber-tired tractor after mulching. Lead-Zinc Mining--Wind Erosion

Photograph of the area around the Eagle-Pichers Mine, Picher, Oklahoma. Vegetation on an old dike around Slimes Pond being affected by wind erosion, an effect of the fine silica (sand). The dike constructed to hold water and fines [ore and other products with a small particle size] from the flotation process. The pond will eventually fill with fines and is then abandoned. The area devoid of any vegetation is subjected to severe wind erosion. This picture depicts fines covering willows and cottonwood trees upon a dike. The spur railroad must receive periodic fine removal from the road bed. OK-2769-16.

Lead-Zinc Mining

Photograph of Slimes Pond, Eagle-Pichers Mine, Picher, Oklahoma. A follow up on Photo No. OK-3013-7. A test to determine whether rye can be grown for cover crop and whether grass can be established in growing rye. View from the southeast corner of Field No. 7 — 3.1 acres. Rye seeded on 9-25-67. Fertilized 250 pounds of 10-20-10 fertilizer at planting time. Top dressed 250 pounds 33-0-0 February 1968. Since native grass drill was not available, field was roto-tilled and native grass was overseeded with an E-Z Flow spreader on March 26, 1968. Rye showed considerable chlorosis at that time and stand was also weakened by tillage. See foreground. OK-3118-5.
