Oral History Interview with Alex Moskowitz, December 18, 2015

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Alex Moskowitz. Moskowitz was drafted into the Army in January 1943. After basic training in Virginia, he was assigned to the 284th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Company and headed overseas. He recalls experiences from the invasion of Leyte and hauling supplies and men ashore aboard DUKW vehicles and LVTs. He also went to Okinawa. When the war ended, his unit went to Kyushu. Moskowitz relates several experiences during his time in combat and during the occupation. He was discharged in January 1946.

He completed Torpedo School and beginning January of 1944, Warneke served as Torpedoman aboard the USS Wesson (DE-184). They traveled to Pearl Harbor, the Philippines, Iwo Jima and Okinawa, supporting invasions. He recalls his experiences through a kamikaze attack on their ship. Warneke continued his service after the war ended, receiving his discharge in early 1948.

He served as an infantry rifleman with the 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division. He deployed to England before participating in the Battle of the Bulge, and saw combat through the Siegfried Line, and liberated prisoners left behind by the SS at Flossenbürg concentration camp. He returned to the US and was discharged in 1946.
