Tory II-C reactor cold critical assembly program

Declassified 27 Nov 1973. The cold critical experiments with the Tory II-C reactor were performed in the critical facility of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at Livermore. The reactor is described briefly; the experimental equipment and the arrangement for the experiments is described in detail. The core poison was removed without difficulty, and criticality was achieved at 1624 hours July 14, 1965. With the design core configuration the shutdown margin was less than had been intended; criticality was attained at a shim rod bank position of 38.5 inches insertion rather than the expected 35 inches All Hastelloy tie tubes were replaced by Rene'-41. A heated core experiment with DELTA T = 129 plus or minus 7 deg F above room temperature provided a measure of the temperature coefficient which was found to be --3.9 x 10/sup -3/ plus or minus 7% inch of shim rod bank travel/ deg F. Other experiments included flux mapping, using fission foils, fission counters and copper flux wires, transients to determine control element worths, studies of flux spectrum by means of threshold detectors, and measurements of multiplication for various shutdown configurations for purposes of operational safety. Surface-finish experiments allow a measurement of the evolution of a broad spectrum of random initial modes.

GROW1: a crop growth model for assessing impacts of gaseous pollutants from geothermal technologies

A preliminary model of photosynthesis and growth of field crops was developed to assess the effects of gaseous pollutants, particularly airborne sulfur compounds, resulting from energy production from geothermal resources. The model simulates photosynthesis as a function of such variables as irradiance, CO/sub 2/ diffusion resistances, and internal biochemical processes. The model allocates the products of photosynthesis to structural (leaf, stem, root, and fruit) and storage compartments of the plant. The simulations encompass the entire growing season from germination to senescence. The model is described conceptually and mathematically and examples of model output are provided for various levels of pollutant stress. Also, future developments that would improve this preliminary model are outlined and its applications are discussed.

Extensional wave attenuation and velocity in partially-saturated sand in the sonic frequency range

Extensional wave attenuation and velocity measurements on a high permeability Monterey sand were performed over a range of gas saturations for imbibition and degassing conditions. These measurements were conducted using extensional wave pulse propagation and resonance over a 1 - 9 kHz frequency range for a hydrostatic confining pressure of 8.3 MPa. Analysis of the extensional wave data and the corresponding X-ray CT images of the gas saturation show strong attenuation resulting from the presence of the gas (QE dropped from 300 for the dry sand to 30 for the partially-saturated sand), with larger attenuation at a given saturation resulting from heterogeneous gas distributions. The extensional wave velocities are in agreement with Gassmann theory for the test with near-homogeneous gas saturation and with a patchy saturation model for the test with heterogeneous gas saturation. These results show that partially-saturated sands under moderate confining pressure can produce strong intrinsic attenuation for extensional waves.

The basic purpose of the transition program in the operations area was to obtain a detailed understanding of the FMPC operations with emphasis on equipment and organization, Also considered in this evaluation were several extant conditions at FMPC which may have significant impact on initiatives adopted in the operations area. These conditions are as follows: capital expenditures over the last several years averaged less than 20% of what might be considered minimum to sustain such a facility in a good operating condition; the production load is ramping up placing greater demands on an old facility; the workforce is relatively inexperienced (68% with less than five (5) years) at FMPC; plans are in place to institute major upgrading of FMPC facilities; the RFP described the need for a major effort in the Environment, Safety and Health Area. Considering the above concerns, the transition program was focused in the following areas: Procedures - An inexperienced workforce operating in an atmosphere requiring rigid compliance with more rigorous environmental criteria necessitates clear, concise up-to-date procedures to enhance performance; Training - New equipment, new people and rigorous environmental constraints demand an aggressive, focused training program. A Study of Complex Ions in Fused Salt Systems. Final Report

Absorption spectrophotometric methods were used in a study of complex ion formation and acid-base reactions in fused chloride and nitrate systems. Several methods for the treatment of spectrophotometric data were investigated. The spectra of various chromium salts were determined in three nitrate melts and in fused lithium chloride-pothssium chloride. In low solute concentrations in LiNO/sub 3/-KNO/sub 3/, NaNC/sub 3/-KNO/sub 3/, and LiCl-KCl melts, the species found was the chromate ion, while in molten AgNO/sub 3/, the species found was the dichromate ion. An explanation of these observations is put forward, and their significance discussed. Formation constants for leadchloro and lead-bromo complexes were evaluated. The values obtained for the first two lead-chloro and leadbromo complexes are 11.3, 3.6 and 13.3 and 6.0, respectively. Mass spectral studies of the gaseous products of the reaction between dichromate ion and nitrate ion in fused NaNO/sub 3/-KNO/sub 3/ showed that the reaction is of an acidbase type, involving formation of a nitronium ion which then reacts with nitrate ion to evolve dinitrogen pentoxide decomposition products. A number of qualitative experiments in fused salts involving acid-base reactions were performed, and their relation to oxidation-reduction processes in the fused salts is discussed. 3-D Numerical Modeling of a Complex Salt Structure

Reliably processing, imaging, and interpreting seismic data from areas with complicated structures, such as sub-salt, requires a thorough understanding of elastic as well as acoustic wave propagation. Elastic numerical modeling is an essential tool to develop that understanding. While 2-D elastic modeling is in common use, 3-D elastic modeling has been too computationally intensive to be used routinely. Recent advances in computing hardware, including commodity-based hardware, have substantially reduced computing costs. These advances are making 3-D elastic numerical modeling more feasible. A series of example 3-D elastic calculations were performed using a complicated structure, the SEG/EAGE salt structure. The synthetic traces show that the effects of shear wave propagation can be important for imaging and interpretation of images, and also for AVO and other applications that rely on trace amplitudes. Additional calculations are needed to better identify and understand the complex wave propagation effects produced in complicated structures, such as the SEG/EAGE salt structure.

ESTIMATING IMPURITIES IN SURPLUS PLUTONIUM FOR DISPOSITION

The United States holds at least 61.5 metric tons (MT) of plutonium that is permanently excess to use in nuclear weapons programs, including 47.2 MT of weapons-grade plutonium. Surplus inventories will be stored safely by the Department of Energy (DOE) and then transferred to facilities that will prepare the plutonium for permanent disposition. The Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) operates a Feed Characterization program for the Office of Fissile Materials Disposition of the National Nuclear Security Administration and the DOE Office of Environmental Management. Many of the items that require disposition are only partially characterized, and SRNL uses a variety of techniques to predict the isotopic and chemical properties that are important for processing through the Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility and alternative disposition paths. Recent advances in laboratory tools, including Prompt Gamma Analysis and Peroxide Fusion treatment, provide data on the existing inventories that will enable disposition without additional, costly sampling and destructive analysis.

Electron Anomalous Magnetic Moment in Basis Light-Front Quantization Approach

We apply the Basis Light-Front Quantization (BLFQ) approach to the Hamiltonian field theory of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) in free space. We solve for the mass eigenstates corresponding to an electron interacting with a single photon in light-front gauge. Based on the resulting non-perturbative ground state light-front amplitude we evaluate the electron anomalous magnetic moment. The numerical results from extrapolating to the infinite basis limit reproduce the perturbative Schwinger result with relative deviation less than 1.2%. We report significant improvements over previous works including the development of analytic methods for evaluating the vertex matrix elements of QED.

Model Documentation for the MiniCAM

The MiniCAM, short for the Mini-Climate Assessment Model, is an integrated assessment model of moderate complexity focused on energy and agriculture sectors. The model produces emissions of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) and other radiatively important substances such as sulfur dioxide. Through incorporation of the simple climate model MAGICC, the consequences of these emissions for climate change and sea-level rise can be examined. The MiniCAM is designed to be fast and flexible.

MicrobesOnline: an integrated portal for comparative and functional genomics (open access)

MicrobesOnline: an integrated portal for comparative and functional genomics

Since 2003, MicrobesOnline (http://www.microbesonline.org) has been providing a community resource for comparative and functional genome analysis. The portal includes over 1000 complete genomes of bacteria, archaea and fungi and thousands of expression microarrays from diverse organisms ranging from model organisms such as Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae to environmental microbes such as Desulfovibrio vulgaris and Shewanella oneidensis. To assist in annotating genes and in reconstructing their evolutionary history, MicrobesOnline includes a comparative genome browser based on phylogenetic trees for every gene family as well as a species tree. To identify co-regulated genes, MicrobesOnline can search for genes based on their expression profile, and provides tools for identifying regulatory motifs and seeing if they are conserved. MicrobesOnline also includes fast phylogenetic profile searches, comparative views of metabolic pathways, operon predictions, a workbench for sequence analysis and integration with RegTransBase and other microbial genome resources. The next update of MicrobesOnline will contain significant new functionality, including comparative analysis of metagenomic sequence data.
