Flight Investigation to Determine the Hinge Moments of a Beveled-Edge Aileron on a 45 Degree Sweptback Wing at Transonic and Low Supersonic Speeds

Report discussing testing of a model of the pilotless aircraft RM-1 to measure aileron hinge moments in flight in order to determine the reason for loss of roll stabilization at supercritical speeds in flight. The aileron was found to become quickly underbalanced over the full deflection range at supercritical speeds. Information about the general flight behavior, aileron hinge moments, and roll stabilization of the model is provided.

Characterization of Vadose Zone Sediment: Borehole 299-W23-19 [SX -115] in the S-SX Waste Management Area.

The Tank Farm Vadose Zone Project is led by CH2M HILL Hanford Group, Inc. Their goals include defining risks from past and future single-shell tank farm activities, identifying and evaluating the efficacy of interim measures, and collecting geo-technical information and data. The purpose of these activities is to support future decisions made by the U.S. Department of Energy regarding near-term operations, future waste retrieval, and final closure activities for the single-shell tank Waste Management Areas. To help in this effort, CH2M HILL contracted with scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to analyze sediment samples collected from borehole 299-W23-19. The conclusions reached from this study support specific mechanisms influencing subsurface migration of contaminants. The mechanisms are supported by the distributions of contaminants beneath tank farms. These observations will help DOE and CH2M HILL identify and implement viable remediation and closure activities.

Tests were conducted to determine the amount of error introduced in reactor power data by radiation-induced voltages in cables and electrometer preamplifier chassis. The results, obtained near the central exposure facility of the KEWB (Reacter Safety Experiments), showed no observable radiation effects under the conditions of present use. Continental Shelf Processes Effecting the Oceanography of the South Atlantic Bight. Hydrography of Onslow Bay, North Carolina: September 1975 (OBIS II). Progress Report

Over the course of OBIS II, 3-14 September, two intrusion cores were observed. One was apparently trapped nearshore over much of the study period, but as time went on, it either dissipated, moved too far shoreward or moved too far laterally along the shelf to be detected by the existing observational grid. The other (later) intrusion was first detected on 5-7 September and was observed to be moving into the Bay from the southeast over the remainder of the study period. Plots of the horizontal temperature and salinity distribution were suggestive of these phenomenon by means of the higher salinity-lower temperature relationship. However, the real confirmation rests in the vertical distributions of sigma-t and chlorophyll presented in conjunction with the Bio and Hydrogrids, and the T--S plot which reveals slope waters on the shelf. The intruded waters were not of low enough temperature to carry high nutrient concentrations onto the shelf for study. However, the general results of this study tend to confirm the view that our basic grid array and methods are compatible with measurement of the processes we initially set out to study. The RHIC Injector Accelerators Configurations, and Performance for the RHIC 2003 Au-D Physics Run.

The RHIC 2003 Physics Run [1] required collisions between gold ions and deuterons. The injector necessarily had to deliver adequate quality (transverse and longitudinal emittance) and quantity of both species. For gold this was a continuing evolution from past work [2]. For deuterons it was new territory. For the filling of the RHIC the injector not only had to deliver quality beams but also had to switch between these species quickly. This paper details the collider requirements and our success in meeting these. Some details of the configurations employed are given.

Polarized Proton Operations in the Ags and RHIC.

Polarized proton beam has been accelerated and stored at 100 GeV in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to study spin effects in the hadronic reactions. The essential equipment includes four Siberian snakes and eight spin rotators in two RHIC rings, a partial snake in the AGS, fast relative polarimeters, and ac dipoles in the AGS and RHIC. This paper summarizes the performance of RHIC as a polarized proton collider and of AGS as the injector to RHIC.

Commissioning Results of Slow Extraction of Heavy Ions From the AGS Booster.

Brookhaven's AGS Booster has been modified to deliver slow extracted beam to a new beam line, the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL). This facility was constructed in collaboration with NASA for the purpose of performing radiation effect studies for the NASA space program. The design of the resonant extraction system has been described in [1]. A more detailed description, which includes predictions of the slow extracted beam time structure has been described in [2]. In this report we will present results of the system commissioning and performance.

Report presenting an analysis of the effects of compressibility on the pressure coefficients of several bodies of revolution by comparing experimentally determined pressure coefficients with corresponding pressure coefficients calculated by the use of linearized equations of compressible flow. The results indicated that the theoretical methods predict the subsonic pressure-coefficient changes over the central portion of the body but do not predict the pressure-coefficient changes near the nose.

Novel QCD Effects from Initial and Final State Interactions

Initial-state and final-state interactions which are conventionally neglected in the parton model, have a profound effect in QCD hard-scattering reactions. The effects, which arise from gluon exchange between the active and spectator quarks, cause leading-twist single-spin asymmetries, diffractive deep inelastic scattering, diffractive hard hadronic reactions, and the breakdown of the Lam-Tung relation in Drell-Yan reactions. Diffractive deep inelastic scattering also leads to nuclear shadowing and non-universal antishadowing of nuclear structure functions through multiple scattering reactions in the nuclear target. Factorization-breaking effects are particularly important for hard hadron interactions since both initial-state and final-state interactions appear. Related factorization breaking effects can also appear in exclusive electroproduction reactions and in deeply virtual Compton scattering. None of the effects of initial-state and final-state interactions are incorporated in the light-front wavefunctions of the target hadron computed in isolation.

Maintenance and operations contractor plan for transition to the project Hanford management contract (PHMC)

This plan has been developed by Westinghouse Hanford Company (WHC), and its subcontractors ICF Kaiser Hanford (ICF KH) and BCS Richland, Inc. (BCSR), at the direction of the US Department of Energy (DOE), Richland Operations Office (RL). WHC and its subcontractors are hereafter referred to as the Maintenance and Operations (M and O) Contractor. The plan identifies actions involving the M and O Contractor that are critical to (1) prepare for a smooth transition to the Project Hanford Management Contractor (PHMC), and (2) support and assist the PHMC and RL in achieving transition as planned, with no or minimal impact to ongoing baseline activities. The plan is structured around two primary phases. The first is the pre-award phase, which started in mid-February 1996 and is currently scheduled to be completed on June 1, 1996, at which time the contract is currently planned to be awarded. The second is the follow-on four-month post-award phase from June 1, 1996, until October 1, 1996. Considering the magnitude and complexity of the scope of work being transitioned, completion in four months will require significant effort by all parties. Dynamic versus Static Structure Functions and Novel Diffractive Effects in QCD

Initial- and final-state rescattering, neglected in the parton model, have a profound effect in QCD hard-scattering reactions, predicting single-spin asymmetries, diffractive deep inelastic scattering, diffractive hard hadronic reactions, the breakdown of the Lam Tung relation in Drell-Yan reactions, and nuclear shadowing and non-universal antishadowing--leading-twist physics not incorporated in the light-front wavefunctions of the target computed in isolation. I also discuss the use of diffraction to materialize the Fock states of a hadronic projectile and test QCD color transparency, and anomalous heavy quark effects. The presence of direct higher-twist processes where a proton is produced in the hard subprocess can explain the large proton-to-pion ratio seen in high centrality heavy ion collisions. I emphasize the importance of distinguishing between static observables such as the probability distributions computed from the square of the light-front wavefunctions versus dynamical observables which include the effects of rescattering.

A summary of special coatings projects conducted in support of the Die Casting Program

The usefulness of various kinds of coatings to the die casting program has been studied. This work includes heat transfer and fluid flow calculations, as well as experimental work, to examine the feasibility and characteristics of various types of coatings. Calculations include the effect of surface roughness on fluid flow, conductance as a function of coating thickness, conductivity as a function of coating porosity, and solidification and possible remelting of microspheres of metal. In each case, the model is described and the results are presented. Experimental work involved evaluating the relative insulating value of various coatings and an analysis of commercial flame-sprayed coatings, low-density coatings, and release coatings. In each case, description of the experimental arrangement is given and the results are described. 5 refs., 28 figs., 6 tabs.

A secondary purpose is to help identify possible discrepancies or inconsistencies in the component data sets developed elsewhere or in the scenario data sets. This plan covers activities involved in assembling aircraft emission scenario data sets and by the component data set producers in supplying information to support evaluation of the component data sets. It does not cover work by the data producers to validate their work in developing the component data sets or to establish the fundamental soundness of the component data sets.
