This NSF-funded workshop initiated a research trajectory that brings the fields of language archives and user-centered design (UCD) into dialogue, with the goal of improving users’ experiences with language archives and making them more accessible and useful to diverse user groups. The workshop documented perspectives of key stakeholder groups and generated initial conceptual frameworks to guide further research. This video documents the first hour of discussion on the second day of the workshop. The topics were: creation of a language archive typology, facilitating the use of language archives, and challenges and other factors to consider in the development of UCD guidelines.

Somi Roy discusses his experience of how political instability and violence break apart communities and erode their ability to pass down their written and spoken word, and the relations between insurgency and writing systems in Manipur.

Mr. Barrios was born and raised in Victoria, Texas. He started working for the local newspaper at the age of 16, writing book reviews. He was drafted into the military, trained as a medic and stationed in Austin, where he attended UT. He later became politicized and joined SDS, involved in anti-war activism. After graduating from college, he taught high school level English in San Antonio and later moved to Crystal City to support the 1969 walkout, eventually staying as a teacher. He wrote several plays that touched upon to Chicano/a identity and politics. Throughout the interview, Mr. Barrios discussed sexism in the Chicano movement, and the exclusion of LGBT Chicanos/as.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Walter Gallagher. Gallagher joined the Navy after quitting high school and trained in aviation ordnance. In May, 1944 he was assigned to USS Franklin (CV-13) where he would arm dive bombers. Gallagher describes an injury he sustained while loading bombs as well as various enemy attacks on the Franklin, including a kamikaze. He was aboard when the Japanese bombed the Franklin in March, 1945. Gallagher recalls the attack and was ordered to transfer to USS Santa Fe (CL-60). From there, Gallagher spent six months at Hawaii before going back to the US.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Jack Hensel. Hensel was drafted into the Navy in June 1943. He trained as an aerial gunner and was eventually assigned to a crew aboard an Avenger. In early 1945, he went aboard USS Franklin (CV-13). In March, when the Franklin was attacked, Hensel was blown overboard and eventually made it onto a raft before being rescued by USS Hickox (DD-673). He went to a hospital at Ulithi to recover from burns before heading back to the US. He was undergoing more training when the war ended.

Johnson earned a doctorate from Texas A&M in 1967 and taught at Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern University. In his interview, he discusses his early life, military service, attending Texas A&M, racial integration, and his career as an educator.

Ray Hill was born in Galena Park in 1940. He grew up in a blue collar household, and became involved with the NAACP at an early age. After travelling around the country, he returned to Houston and is prosecuted for burglary. Upon leaving jail, he becomes involved in the LGBT scene and movements in Houston including the founding of Pride, the Montrose Center, and through HIV/AIDS advocacy. Mr. Hill also led the prosecution of the Paul Broussard case in 1991. In 1980, he began the Prison Show and has continued to be involved in radio shows and media ventures since.
