Preliminary Results Obtained from Flight Test of a 1/7-Scale Rocket-Powered Model of the Grumman XF10F Airplane Configuration in the Swept-Wing Condition, TED No. NACA DE 354

"A flight investigation of a 1/7-scale rocket-powered model of the XF10F Grumman XF10F airplane in the swept-wing configuration has been made. The purpose of this test was to determine the static longitudinal stability, damping in pitch, and longitudinal control effectiveness of the airplane with the center of gravity at 20 percent of the wing mean aerodynamic chord. Only a small amount of data was obtained from the test because, immediately after booster separation at a Mach number of 0.88, the configuration was directionally unstable and diverged in sideslip" (p. 1).

An Application of the Rocket-Propelled-Model Technique to the Investigation of Low-Lift Buffeting and the Results of Preliminary Tests (open access)

An Application of the Rocket-Propelled-Model Technique to the Investigation of Low-Lift Buffeting and the Results of Preliminary Tests

"The rocket-propelled-model technique has been applied to the investigation of low-lift buffeting. Results of preliminary tests show that severe buffeting, wing dropping, and normal-force changes occur almost simultaneously near zero lift over a Mach number range near 0.9 on unswept wings 12 percent thick. On unswept wings 7 percent thick, buffeting did not occur; however, mild wing dropping and normal-force changes were experienced" (p. 1).

Theoretical Damping in Roll and Rolling Moment Due to Differential Wing Incidence for Slender Cruciform Wings and Wing-Body Combinations (open access)

Theoretical Damping in Roll and Rolling Moment Due to Differential Wing Incidence for Slender Cruciform Wings and Wing-Body Combinations

"A method of analysis based on slender-wing theory is developed to investigate the characteristics in roll of slender cruciform wings and wing-body combinations. The method makes use of the conformal mapping processes of classical hydrodynamics which transform the region outside a circle and the region outside an arbitrary arrangement of line segments intersecting at the origin. The method of analysis may be utilized to solve other slender cruciform wing-body problems involving arbitrarily assigned boundary conditions" (p. 1).

Progress Report on Investigations of Western Phosphate Deposits (open access)

Progress Report on Investigations of Western Phosphate Deposits

From abstract: A comprehensive investigation of the western phosphate deposits, in progress since 1947, involves a study of the Phosphoria and Park City formations over an area of about 135,000 square miles in the states of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Utah0 It was undertaken to acquire more data on the thickness, composition and quality, structure, and distribution of the deposits--data that would help industry select deposits suitable for mining and permit estimation of reserves, evaluation of potential byproduct elements, and establishment of the origin of the deposits.

Domestic Phosphate Deposits

From abstract: Incomplete but recently partly revised estimates indicate the presence of about 10 billion tons of phosphate deposits in the Urited States that is minable under present economic conditions. Deposits too lean in quality or thickness to compete with those in the western and southeastern fields probably contain tens of billions of tons.

Uranium-Bearing Copper Deposits Near Guadalupita, Mora County, New Mexico (open access)

Uranium-Bearing Copper Deposits Near Guadalupita, Mora County, New Mexico

Abstract: Dark shale and arkosic sandstone south of Guadalupita, Mora County, New Mexico, contain as much as 4 percent copper and 0. 01 percent uranium on the basis of a few samples recently analyzed. The deposits occur primarily in the dark shale which is about 5 feet thick and dips about 900. Potential reserves of this material are very large. Prospecting and further geologic work will be necessary, however, to evaluate possibilities of these large tonnages. If the deposits can be mined for their copper content, the uranium might be recovered as a byproduct. Detailed mapping and possibly some trenching will be undertaken by the Geological Survey in order further to evaluate the deposits.

Some Effects of Aeroelasticity at Mach Numbers From 0.7 to 1.6 on the Rolling Effectiveness of Thin Flat-Plate Delta Wings Having 45 Degree Swept Leading Edges and Full-Span Constant-Chord Ailerons

From Summary: "The aeroelastic effects on wing-aileron rolling effectiveness and drag of thin flat-plate delta wings with 45 degree swept leading edge and plain constant-chord ailerons have been investigated. This investigation has been carried out over a Mach number range of 0.7 to 1.6 by means of rocket-propelled test vehicles in free flight. The results show a near-linear decrease in lateral control effectiveness with a decrease in the wing torsional stiffness. An aileron-effectiveness reversal was experienced with the more flexible delta-wing models."

Uranium-Bearing Copper Deposits in the Coyote Mining District, Mora County, New Mexico (open access)

Uranium-Bearing Copper Deposits in the Coyote Mining District, Mora County, New Mexico

Abstract: Uranium-bearing copper deposits occur in steeply dipping beds of the Sangre de Cristo formation of Permian and Pennsylvanian age south of Coyote, Mora County, New Mexico. Detailed mapping and sampling of these deposits indicate that they occur in carbonaceous zones in shales and arkosic sand-stones. Samples contain as much as 0.067 percent uranium. A yellow radioactive mineral found in the deposits was identified as metatyuyamunite. All of the samples were collected near the surface and are weathered. It is recommended that physical exploration be undertaken to determine the extent and grade of uranium-bearing zones at depth.
