Abstract: A brief sketch of the stratigraphy of the Miocene of Virginia and the Miocene and Pliocene of North Carolina was prepared by Dr. W. C. Mansfield before his death in July 1939. His purpose was "to provide a background of formational nomenclature" for the taxonomic treatment of the molluscan faunas. The physical nature and distribution of the upper Tertiary formations within those States are discussed, characteristic sections given, and diagnostic molluscan species listed. Part 1 of the systematic report covers the Pelecypoda. A monographic treatment is not attempted, but 132 previously known species are considered, and 62 new species and subspecies are described and figured.

Introduction: Part 2 of the Systematic Report continues and concludes the study of the Mollusca from the Miocene and lower Pliocene of Virginia and North Carolina. One hundred and nineteen species, only a fraction of the known fauna, are reviewed and 66 additional species are described and figured. (See faunal chart, pp. 180-183.) The report upon the gastropods suffers from the same shortcomings obvious in the work on the pelecypods. Most of the material is from old collections made before the importance of the exact placing of the fossil locality both areally and vertically was recognized. Many of the citations of outcrops are vague and the sections generalized. Detailed field studies, particularly on the zoning of the Yorktown formation in southern Virginia and northern North Carolina, were begun later by Wendell P. Mansfield, but he died in the summer of 1939 before the completion of the work.

From introduction: This bulletin, which is published in two parts, contains the complete results of all spirit leveling done in South Carolina by the Geological Survey of the United States Department of the Interior, including those heretofore published.' The 34th parallel of latitude, passing through Columbia, serves to divide the State into two sections, each of which is represented by one of the parts of the bulletin. Part 1 deals with the section lying north of the 34th parallel, designated as northern South Carolina, and part 2 deals with the section lying south of that parallel, designated as southern South Carolina. In each part descriptions of the points for which figures of elevation have been determined are listed according to the quadrangles in which the points occur, and the quadrangles are arranged in alphabetic order.

From preface: The manuscript of this report, which is the culmination of field and office studies carried on intermittently s' ice 1914, partly in cooperation with the Geological Survey of Georgia, was completed early in 1938. It was prepared with the expectation that it would form part of a more comprehensive report on the geology of Georgia by several authors, which was intended to accompany a geologic map of the entire State on a scale of 1: 500,000. However, this map without the text was published in 1939 by the Georgia Division of Mines, Mining and Geology. Part of this map is reproduced herein as plate 1 without revision.

From introduction: The Red Bluff Bay area was examined briefly for the Geological Survey by John C. Reed and others in 1939. During the summer of 1941 the writers, with R. E. L. Rutledge, mapped this area on a scale of 1:12,000, and examined the serpentine masses in the interior during the course of reconnaissance trips into the surrounding region.

From Abstract: "This bulletin is a summary of present knowledge of the adsorbent or bleaching clays-their distribution, field and laboratory identification, physical and chemical properties, uses, quality, and value. Problems in the drying, treating with acids, and washing are discussed, and methods of testing and rating decolorizing efficiency are described."

From Abstract: "This report deals with an area of 425 square miles in the western part of Texas, immediately south of the New Mexico line. The report describes the geology of the area, that is, the nature of its rocks, tectonics, and surface features, and the evidence that they give as to the evolution of the area through geologic time. Incidental reference is made to the geology of surrounding regions in order to place the area in its environment."

Preface: The author of this paper gives a thorough description of a complex of very unusual igneous rocks and associated hydrothermal deposits.
