Stemming options and their effect on containment (open access)

Stemming options and their effect on containment

In more than 17 years of studying underground nuclear explosions, LLL has developed containment procedures that include a stemming plan. Stemming plans can be divided into either layered or continuous forms. There are marked differences between standards for these forms. The materials used in the continuous plan must meet more stringent specifications; as a consequence, they are more expensive. Both plans have been successful since the Baneberry Event. Both plans must meet the following requirements: provide a plug sufficient to match the overburden density of earth; contain radioactive gases at the lowest possible depth; minimize the generation of noncondensable gases (such as CO/sub 2/); minimize gas flow rates during the early post-detonation stages when cavity pressure is high; and be compatible with the experiment and its diagnostics. LLL experience in developing containment procedures is reviewed, and the reasons for the adoption of LLL's continuous stemming plan are reported. (LCL)

Onslow Bay Intrusion Study Hydrographic Observations During Current Meter Servicing Cruises in August, October, and December 1975. ORBIS, I, III and IV. [Atlantic Coastal Waters Off Georgia]

Data are presented from a preliminary analysis of chemical/physical data obtained during three current meter servicing cruises in Onslow Bay off the coast of Georgia, in August, October, and December 1975 aboard the R/V ADVANCE II. These cruises were made as part of an ERDA sponsored study investigating the shelf processes effecting the distribution of nutrients in the South Atlantic Bight. The objective of these cruises was to collect temperature and chemical data to correlate with the data recorded by current meters and thermographs which had already been deployed or which were about to be deployed at two locations in the study area. No attempt will be made at this time however to correlate the data presented to these related records.

Vadose Zone Hydrogeology Data Package for Hanford Assessments (open access)

Vadose Zone Hydrogeology Data Package for Hanford Assessments

This data package documents the technical basis for selecting physical and geochemical parameters and input values that will be used in vadose zone modeling for Hanford assessments. This work was originally conducted as part of the Characterization of Systems Task of the Groundwater Remediation Project managed by Fluor Hanford, Inc., Richland, Washington, and revised as part of the Characterization of Systems Project managed by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) for the U.S. Department of Energy, Richland Operations Office (DOE-RL). This data package describes the geologic framework, the physical, hydrologic, and contaminant transport properties of the geologic materials, and deep drainage (i.e., recharge) estimates, and builds on the general framework developed for the initial assessment conducted using the System Assessment Capability (SAC) (Bryce et al. 2002). The general approach for this work was to update and provide incremental improvements over the previous SAC data package completed in 2001. As with the previous SAC data package, much of the data and interpreted information were extracted from existing documents and databases. Every attempt was made to provide traceability to the original source(s) of the data or interpretations.

Study of EUV emissions from 2XIIB (open access)

Study of EUV emissions from 2XIIB

Initial results from a study of EUV emissions from the 2XIIB experiment are reported. Time-dependent brightness measurements of deuterium, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and titanium emissions from the central 2XIIB plasma have been made. The deuterium Lyman alpha brightness is 1.5 x 10/sup 17/ photons sec/sup -1/cm/sup -2/sr/sup -1/. The Lyman alpha time development and broad spectral profile are consistent with other knowledge of the 2XIIB plasma. Oxygen is the dominant impurity in 2XIIB. The 0 VI 1032 A brightness is 1.65 x 10/sup 18/ photons sec/sup -1/cm/sup -2/sr/sup -1/. The oxygen concentration is 2% and its estimated confinement lifetime is 300 ..mu..s; this may imply mirror confinement of the oxygen ions. Nitrogen and carbon concentrations are 0.4% and 0.3%, respectively. It is not certain whether these impurities are mirror confined. The titanium concentration is believed to be low compared to that of oxygen. The power loss from the central plasma due to radiation by and ionization of light impurities is approximately 60 kW, which is 4% of the power deposited by the neutral beams. Further studies of impurity sources and penetration are now being performed.

I. Cis-dichlorodiammineplatinum(II). Aquation equilibria and isotopic exchange of chloride ligands with free chloride and tetrachloroplatinate(II). II. The Szilard--Chalmers effect in solid-state systems containing the octa-. mu. /sub 3/-chloro-octahedro-hexamolybdenum(II) cluster (open access)

I. Cis-dichlorodiammineplatinum(II). Aquation equilibria and isotopic exchange of chloride ligands with free chloride and tetrachloroplatinate(II). II. The Szilard--Chalmers effect in solid-state systems containing the octa-. mu. /sub 3/-chloro-octahedro-hexamolybdenum(II) cluster

A titration technique was utilized to determine the equilibrium quotients for the first and second aquation steps of cis-Pt(NH/sub 3/)/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/. At 25.0/sup 0/C and an ionic strength of 0.318 M the first and second aquation equilibrium constants are: K/sub 1/ = 3.63 +- 0.22 x 10/sup -3/ M, ..delta..H/sub 1//sup 0/ = 3.4 kcal and K/sub 2/ = 1.11 +- 0.14 x 10/sup -4/ M, ..delta..H/sub 2//sup 0/ = 10 kcal. In the ternary system, cis-Pt(NH/sub 3/)/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/:PtCl/sub 4//sup 2 -/:Cl/sup -/, the kinetics of isotopic exchange of chlorine was investigated. In addition to the expected route of exchange via aquation, a direct exchange of chlorine ligands between cis-Pt(NH/sub 3/)/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/ and PtCl/sub 4//sup 2 -/ occurred which is described by the rate expression. Separation procedures were devised for partial resolution of component yields resulting from dissolving a neutron-irradiated sample of (H/sub 3/O)/sub 2/((Mo/sub 6/Cl/sub 8/)Cl/sub 6/) . 6H/sub 2/O in 1.5 N HCl. A recrystallization procedure was formulated to determine the retention of activity in the parent compound of molybdenum(II) chloride clusters after neutron irradiation. The retention found in an aqueous 1.5 N HCl solution containing 1 percent (H/sub 3/O)/sub 2/((Mo/sub 6/Cl/sub 8/)Cl/sub 6/) . …

Pilot study risk assessment for selected problems at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) (open access)

Pilot study risk assessment for selected problems at the Nevada Test Site (NTS)

The Nevada Test Site (NTS) is located in southwestern Nevada, about 105 km (65 mi) northwest of the city of Las Vegas. A series of tests was conducted in the late 1950s and early 1960s at or near the NTS to study issues involving plutonium-bearing devices. These tests resulted in the dispersal of about 5 TBq of [sup 239,24O]Pu on the surficial soils at the test locations. Additionally, underground tests of nuclear weapons devices have been conducted at the NTS since late 1962; ground water beneath the NTS has been contaminated with radionuclides produced by these tests. These two important problems have been selected for assessment. Regarding the plutonium contamination, because the residual [sup 239]Pu decays slowly (half-life of 24,110 y), these sites could represent a long-term hazard if they are not remediated and if institutional controls are lost. To investigate the magnitude of the potential health risks for this no-remediation case, three basic exposure scenarios were defined that could bring individuals in contact with [sup 239,24O]Pu at the sites: (1) a resident living in a subdivision, (2) a resident farmer, and (3) a worker at a commercial facility -- all located at a test site. The predicted cancer risks …

Final Report PetaScale Application Development Analysis Grant Number DE-FG02-04ER25629

The results obtained from this project will fundamentally change the way we look at computer performance analysis. These results are made possible by the precise definition of a consistent system of measurement with a set of primary units designed specifically for computer performance analysis. This system of units, along with their associated dimensions, allows us to apply the methods of dimensional analysis, based on the Pi Theorem, to define scaling and self-similarity relationships. These relationships reveal new insights into experimental results that otherwise seems only vaguely correlated. Applying the method to cache-miss data revealed scaling relationships that were not seen by those who originally collected the data. Applying dimensional analysis to the performance of parallel numerical algorithms revealed that computational force is a unifying concept for understanding the interaction between hardware and software. The efficiency of these algorithms depends, in a very intimate way, on the balance between hardware forces and software forces. Analysis of five different algorithms showed that performance analysis can be reduced to a study of the differential geometry of the efficiency surface. Each algorithm defines a set of curvilinear coordinates, specific to that algorithm, and different machines follow different paths along the surface depending on the …
