GRAIN REFINEMENT PRODUCED BY AN ALPHA PHASE ANNEAL OF BETA PHASE HEAT TREATED AND WATER QUENCHED URANIUM

During an experiment involving alpha phase annealing (at 610 to 655 deg C for 5 and 10 min) of beta-quenched uranium, it was determined that the relatively coarse, irregular shaped grains (0.08 to 0.150 mm in diameter) in the beta-quenched structure, were replaced by fine equiaxed grains (0.04 to 0.09 mm in diameter). Propeller Flight Investigation to Determine the Effects of Blade Loading

Note presenting a flight investigation of a three-blade propeller in climb and at high speed to determine the effects of blade power loading. Increasing the blade power coefficient from 0.06 to 0.09 was found to increase the efficiency approximately 8 percent at an airplane Mach number of 0.7 and a propeller-tip Mach number of 1.13. In climb, an increase in power loading over the range of blade power coefficients investigated was shown to reduce efficiency, as a consequence of increased induced drag losses.

From introduction: The Bear Valley district is situated in southwestern Idaho, in the drainage of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River (see fig. 1). The placer deposits were drilled by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in 1951 and 1952 to determine their content of monazite and "radioactive black minerals" (here referred to loosely as "radioactive blacks"). The purpose of the study outlined here was to provide a geologic background for an understanding of the origin and distribution of the placer minerals.

A Review of the Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium

BS>The preparation of niobium was attempted by a number of chemical and electrochemical routes. Chemical reduction of oxides and halides such as Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/, K/sub 2/NbOF/sub 5/, K/sub 2/NbF/sub 7/, and NbCl/sub 5/ was conducted with varying degrees of success. Aqueous electrochemical reduction has not yet yielded a metallic deposit. The electrolysis of molten baths containing K/sub 2/NbOF/sub 5/ or K/sub 2/NbF/sub 7/ produced niobium metal. The more promising methods of preparation for Nb metal at the present time include the reaction of Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/ with C, the H/sub 2/ and active metal reduction of NbC1/sub 5/, and electrolysis of K/sub 2/NbF/sub 7/- NaC1 melts. Correlation of Experimental Data With Theory for Perforated Plates With a Triangular Hole Array

The design of the S3G and S4G reactor pressure vessel heads led to a study of perforated plates. A correlation of perforated plate theory with experimental data is given. The test results and analysis used for the S3G model tests are presented along with a review of two other experimental programs in which the experimental data were correlated theory. The conclusions reached indicate that the perforated lattice does, in fact, behave as an equivalent plate of reduced stiffness when subjected to transverse loading. The results obtained from the theory are sufficiently accarate for engineering applications for a range of plate sizes which extends from thin plates (radius-to-thickness ratio 7.5 to 1 for Duncan's tube sheets) to thick plates (radius-to-thickness ratio 1.6 to 1 for the reactor model head) with a variation in the number of penetrations ranging from the large number in Duncan's tube sheet tests down to the relatively small number (19 holes) ia the reactor model head (3/8 scale model). EFFECT OF TRANSFER TIME ON THE RECRYSTALLIZATION BEHAVIOR OF BETA-COOLED URANIUM

A study was made of the recrystallization behavior of beta-quenched uranium by incorporating the effects of transfer time from the beta heat-treating bath to the quench media. A critical transfer lime which relates to the time required to immerse samples at a temperature above the beta-alpha transformation in a quench media directly affects the beta-cooled structure and its ease of recrystallization upon alpha phase annealing. Within the critical transfer time, the ease of recrystallization and degree of grain refinement of beta-cooled samples as measured by alpha-phase annealing temperatures and times are superior to samples quenched beyond the critical transfer time. Report presenting testing of two rocket-propelled research models to determine the effect of the intersection of thin aerodynamic surfaces and the effect of moderate sweepback of thick aerodynamic surfaces on low-lift buffeting. Results regarding trim changes and drag are also provided. It was discovered that low-lift buffeting may be induced at high subsonic speeds by interference due to the intersection of thin aerodynamic surfaces.

The Garm-Lamoreaux Mine, Lemhi County, Idaho

From abstract: The Garm-Lamoreaux property, Lemhi County, Idaho is known to have uraninite and zippeite on two of its dumps. The property has been explored by five adits, two of which are now caved, and one of which is partly caved. The country rock is schistose micaceous quartzite and argillaceous quartzite of Belt age. An east-west fault cuts the quartzite, and the Lamoreaux vein, a gold-sulfide-quartz veins occurs in the fault. The uranium minerals are believed to have core from the vein, on the now inaccessible No. 3 level.
