Determination of trace quantities of thorium in uranyl nitrate by x-ray emission spectrometry
Trace quantities of thorium in uranium were separated by precipitating thorium fluoride from a 1.0M HF-1.0M NH/sub 4/F matrix using yttrium as an internal standard and lanthanum as a carrier. The thorium precipitate was collected on a filter and analyzed by x-ray emission spectrometry. The method has a detection limit of about 15 mu g thorium per gram of uranium. The relative accuracy and precision at the 120- mu g thorium level was 95.5 plus or minus 1.5%. Studies on the rate of precipitation, sample size limitations, and the effect of varying molar fluoride-touranium ratios are discussed. The effects of potentially interfering anions, cations, and acids, which are commonly found in uranium system or form insoluble fluorides were studied. Radioactive tracer studies using /sup 234/Thh and /sup 88/Y were carried out at different levels of thorium and uranium to determine the absolute efficiency of the precipitation. The speed, selectivity, and precision of this x-ray method make it an excellent alternative to spectrophotometric methods. (auth)

Evaluation of high temperature dielectric material. Final report
Laminated flat cables using Kapton film were fabricated; these cables withstood temperatures up to 1000 deg F (538 deg C) for 10 minutes and potentials as high as 20 to 30 kV dc. A superior polyimide adhesive, Thermostik-D', was originated in the Bendix Polymer Laboratory, and a moldable polyimide powder and a process for using it were developed. These materials exhibit electrical strengths up to 625 volts/mil (24 kV/mm) and temperature resistance as high as 850 deg F (454.4 deg C). (auth)

Roll control resonance test vehicle (RCRTV) system postflight evaluation report
This report presents the flight test results for a reentry vehicle spin-fin roll control system. The test vehicle, designated the Roll Control Resonance Test Vehicle, was flight tested on May 10, 1972, at the Sandia Laboratories Tonopah Test Range. The purpose of the flight were (1) to demonstrate and evaluate the capability of the control system to overcome a roll resonance flight instability and (2) to confirm the analytic predictions of system performance. The flight test vehicle had built-in asymmetries which, without roll control, would have caused a persistent roll resonance instability to occur. The test was successful in that all systems functioned properly and all program and flight test objectives were accomplished. Flight test data presented herein confirm analytic predictions and flight simulation methods. Results show that the system maintained roll rate control and prevented the roll resonance instability.

PERCOL user's manual
For Atlantic Richfield Hanford Co., Richland, Wash. Research being conducted under the Radionuclides in Soils Program is attempting to predict the distribution and movement of liquid wastes in the heterogeneous subsurface environment of the Hanford Reservation. As part of this program, a transport model is being developed to predict chemical phenomena in soil-waste reactions. This document describes the use of the PERCOL model, which was developed as a simplified one-dimensional precursor to the transport model. PERCOL numerically describes the complex chemical reactions which occur during percolation of a waste solution through a porous media. This User's Manual describes the main program (PERCOL) and two subroutines MEWTIT and DIST) and gives procedures for accessing these programs, inputting data to them and interpreting the output.
