Floatability of coal and pyrite. [54 references]

An experimental investigation was carried out to improve the froth flotation method of separating coal pyrite. The effect of several surface active agents on the floatability of an Iowa coal and its associated pyrite was studied in both the presence and absence of methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), a commonly used frother. The effectiveness of a special method of chemical pretreatment for depressing pyrite was also investigated. The zeta potential of the same coal and pyrite was measured under the same conditions used in the flotation tests (in the absence of frother). In the absence of MIBC, the floatability of coal and pyrite was low, and appeared to depend on pH. The maximum recovery of pyrite was obtained at a pH of 4.5 with recovery being less at higher or lower pH. The addition of a small amount of MIBC significantly increased the recovery of coal and pyrite with the increase in the recovery of coal being much greater than the increase in the recovery of pyrite. Resistance of Some Soil Bacteria to Pentachlorophenol and Sodium Pentachlorophenate

The purpose of this study was to see if any soil bacteria were able to use pentachlorophenol or sodium pentachlorophenate either aerobically or anaerobically as a sole carbon source, to see if any soil bacteria could survive in high concentrations of sodium pentachlorophenate, to determine the maximum concentration of sodium pentachlorophenate which permitted the growth of some soil bacteria, to see the effects of varying concentrations of sodium pentachlorophenate on the growth curves of soil bacteria capable of growing in its presence, and to see if any soil bacteria could degrade sodium pentachlorophenate.

Taxonomy of the Azotobacteraceae

The classification of the Azotobacteraceae to the level of genus and species has been uncertain since the studies of Beijerinck in 1901. This dissertation represents an effort to establish a system of classification more complete than the one now in use. In this study, both qualitative and quantitative taxonomy were used in order to establish a well founded classification scheme. Qualitative methods included certain important morphological and physiological characteristics, isoenzyme patterns, and immunological reactions. Quantitative methods included numerical taxonomy (based on total morphological and physiological characteristics) and numerical analysis of protein profiles. All the data from these experiments were subject to comparison with other genotypic and phenotypic data.

A Comparative Content Analysis of Texas and Thai High School Biology Textbooks

There were two purposes of this study. The first was that of determining, through an analysis of Texas and Thai biology textbooks, which objectives -- cognitive, affective, manual skill, processes of scientific inquiry, and orientation—were emphasized in three major and twenty-seven minor fields of biology. The second purpose was to determine if significant differences exist in the frequency distribution of these objectives. Only one biology program is used in schools throughout Thailand. This program, which was published by the Ministry of Education, consists of four textbooks with 1977 copyright date. The five Texas textbooks used in this study were those adopted under the provisions of the Textbook Law. The contents of each of the six texts included in the study were classified by using the criteria of Klopfer's Table of Specifications for Science Education.

Storm Water System Monitoring for the Small Municipality Under Phase II of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System

Storm water quality can have a significant impact on receiving water bodies. The chief recipients of these impacts are aquatic life in the receiving water body and downstream water users. Over the last few decades, legislation, regulations, institutions and facilities have evolved to recognize the impact of urban storm water on receiving streams. This increased emphasis has caused contaminants in storm water to be identified as a major concern. This developing concern has generated an increased interest in the water quality of our streams and lakes and emphasized the need for more monitoring efforts. With the passage of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Phase II requirements, small municipalities are responsible for storm water impacts on receiving waters within their jurisdiction. For the purposes of NPDES Phase II requirements, small municipalities are identified as these municipalities that are typically composed of 10,000 but less than 100,000 in population. The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a manual for use by the staff of small municipalities in meeting the requirements prescribed by changes initiated in the NPDES Phase II regulations.
