John Donne and the Classical Elegy (open access)

John Donne and the Classical Elegy

The elegies, as a major body of John Donne's poetry, have been unjustly slighted by critics. In order to correct this imbalance in Donne criticism, this study will examine the whole body of Donne's formal elegies. Despite their diversity, it will be shown that they fall into several broad groupings based on tonal quality and elegiac type: complaintive, lamentive, amatory, and abusive and satiric. By examining Donne's elegies individually and in light of both the Elizabethan and the classical elegy, it will be seen that Donne is the only English poet who utilizes the full scope allowed by the classical elegy.

A System for Measurement of Negative-Ion Charge-Exchange Cross Sections

A radio-frequency positive-ion source and a fifty-kilovolt linear accelerator were designed and constructed in order to produce sizable quantities of hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, neon, and argon. Plans were then made to equip this ion source with charge-exchange apparatus suitable for charge-exchange cross-sectional measurements. It is the purpose of this paper to present the design of the equipment and to present operational knowledge of the equipment and of ion beams which are producible.

It is an examination of the problem of appearance and reality; as a satire, the poem attacks appearances maintained by hypocrisy by placing them against the background of reality which is apparent to Byron.

The Effects of Group Counseling upon Visual Perception and its Relationship to Other Forms of Perception (open access)

The Effects of Group Counseling upon Visual Perception and its Relationship to Other Forms of Perception

The study of perception of visual images and the influence of counseling upon them has received little if any attention. This study was designed to investigate this uncharted area and to demonstrate the effects of counseling upon visual perception. The primary function of this investigation was to seek answers to the following questions. Is it possible for group counseling to have an effect on one's perception of visual stimuli? Will a counseling experience which produces a change in a person' behavior also cause that person to perceive visual images in a different way than he perceived them before counseling? In other words, does a concomitant relationship exist between visual perception and other forms of perception?

The Practice and Procedures of Broadcasting for the Play-by-play Sports Announcer

The problem is twofold. There have been short chapters on sports announcing included in most broadcasting textbooks. These chapters have given a limited, cursory explanation of the preparation necessary for aspiring sportscasters. Secondly, most authors have approached the field from the viewpoint of the researcher. This investigation approaches the problem from the viewpoint of a sports announcer who has started in small market radio and worked his way through to a responsible position in a major broadcasting area.
