This recording is a part of the radio series “Toscanini: The Man Behind the Legend,” which was a tribute to conductor Arturo Toscanini. The broadcasts consist of music performed by the NBC Orchestra as well as interviews with composers, conductors, orchestra members, and other people associated with Toscanini. This segment includes performances of Berlioz's Rákóczy March, Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel and Respighi's Pines of Rome and features an interview with NBC sound effects specialist Chet Hill.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with John V. Haselby. Haselby was born in Grass Creek, Indiana on 24 April 1919. Haselby had 4 brothers and 5 sisters. He and his brothers all served and survived their service to the war effort. Haselby attended flight training at Chickasha, Oklahoma and received his wings and commission in Victoria, Texas in April 1942. He was sent to Morocco aboard USS Chenango (ACV-28) which was transporting 78 P40 airplanes that had been hoisted onboard. He flew 78 missions from Morocco to Sicily protecting and defending ground troops as they moved. Haselby was awarded a Purple Heart for an injury received during a mission flying close to the ground. He also received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and 7 Oak Leaf Clusters. Haselby made a career out of the Air Force and retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1957.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with F. Duane Flink. Flink joined the Navy as an aviation cadet in 1943. The program had enough candidates at that time, so he was sent to boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois. Flink describes life in boot camp. He was then sent to submarine school in New London, Connecticut and describes the training he received and training that was conducted on O-boats. Flink was then sent to California where he joined the crew of the USS Pelias (AS-14) for the remainder of the war. He served as a cook and seaman. Flink was discharged in May of 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with John J. Keenan. Keenan joined the Army in June 1941. He served as a bugler and runner and was quickly promoted due to circumstances and luck. Keenan became a master sergeant in less than 2 years. He served with the 7th Armored Division and landed in France in August 1944. Keenan describes some of the incidents he remembers as his unit advanced across Europe including meeting the Russians at the Elbe River. He was discharged in July 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Stanley Robertson. Robertson entered the Army Air Forces as a cadet in May 1943 and graduated as a pilot and earned his commission in August, 1944. He started training on B-17 bombers before being assigned to B-29s. He arrived at Tinian in late April 1945 and started combat missions over Japan with the 398th Bomb Squadron, 504th Bomb Group. He names and discusses several missions over various Japanese cities. Robertson returned to the US and was discharged in November 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Nellis Verhey. Verhey joined the Army in April of 1943. He served with G Company, 3rd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. In 1944 they traveled to England. Verhey parachuted into Normandy on D-Day in June and into Belgium during Operation Market Garden in September. Verhey was discharged in December of 1945. After the war ended, he served on Honor Guard duty for both Eisenhower and Truman.
