Report analyzing the "preferential removal of neutral gas from an incompletely ionized plasma in which the ionized particles are allowed to drift along magnetic field lines through a differentially pumped channel" and its relation to the P⁴ experiment. The report also analyzes the regenerative and non-regenerative losses of plasma by radial diffusion, as well as "considerations relating to the ultimate disposal of overflow plasma."

Note presenting an analysis and comparison of atmospheric turbulence as experienced by rocket-powered models and temperature lapse-rate data obtained from rawinsonde soundings in 38 cases by using an assumed temperature lapse-rate stability boundary as a basis for comparison. A limited correlation has been obtained which indicates that atmospheric conditions classified as being unstable will generally be turbulent, but a marginal or stable classification does not necessarily indicate smooth air.

Geological Survey investigations in the Club Mesa area and presents a compilation of available geologic data that would be helpful in future exploration. Detailed geologic logs of U. S. Geological Survey holes drilled in the Club Mesa area on public land that is no longer withdrawn from mineral entry are on open file for public inspection in the U. S. Geological Survey office, Grand Junction, Colorado.

From Introduction: "One of the many services rendered by the Federal Bureau of Mines is the identification and general examination of ore and mineral samples. This publication describes methods of testing these samples. The object of this publication is to present the testing procedures in general use in the industry up to the point where the checking becomes a quantitative one for particular products."

Memorandum presenting a mechanism for the thermal decomposition of sodium, lithium, beryllium, magnesium, aluminum, and boron alkyls and for the reverse reaction, the addition of olefins to metal hydrides. The reactions are shown to be nonradical and to probably proceed through a cyclic intermediate.

"A two-dimensional wind-tunnel investigation of the flow and force characteristics of four NACA 6A-series airfoils with thickness ratios of 4, 6, and 9 percent has been conducted in the Langley airfoil test apparatus at at transonic Mach numbers between 0.8 and 1.25. The Reynolds number range for these tests varied from 2.6 x 10(6) to 2.8 x 10(6). As was expected, the airfoils exhibited a smooth transition in force coefficients from a Mach number of 1.0 to the values obtained at the higher speeds. Lift-curve slope and maximum lift-drag ratio correlated very well on a basis of the transonic similarity laws at Mach numbers above 1.0, but below that value the correlation was not good" (p. 1).

Report presenting flight tests over a range of Mach numbers to study the effects of a simulated afterburning turbojet engine on the gross longitudinal flight characteristics of two geometrically identical models of a swept-wing fighter-type configuration. From Summary: "A test technique and data analysis method has been developed for determining the longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics from free-flight tests of rocket-propelled models. The technique makes use of accelerometers and an angle-of-attack indicator to permit instantaneous measurements of lift, drag, and pitching moments. The data, obtained during transient oscillations resulting from control-surface disturbances, are analyzed by essentially nonlinear direct methods (such as cross plots of the variation of lift coefficient with angle of attack) and by linear indirect methods by using the equations of motion for a transient oscillation."

Background: The series of papers in this session will treat an area of separations development capable of immediate application to the design and operation of facilities for reprocessing irradiated reactor fuels.

Summary: "The engineering survey, summarized in this report, consisted of studies on acid mine water, underground-water pools, the "buried valley" of the Susquehanna River, inundated anthracite reserves, mine pumping plants, surface-water pools, seepage of surface water into mines, barrier pillars between mines, and geologic features of the region that included core drilling along alinement of the proposed Conowingo tunnel and to some extent along the proposed Marcus Hook alternate tunnel route. A comprehensive study was conducted to determine corrosion and erosion resistance of selected metals and alloys and to ascertain their suitability for components of pumps to be used in handling acid mine water."
